London based duo Codec came to the forefront of the scene late last year after their EP on Black Butter Records rose to the top of the Juno charts and surpassed all expectations. Codec's sound and style is deeply rooted in the realms of bass music, with a strong sense of UK garage blended with 90's house. Along the way their dancefloor designed sound has gained them support from tastemaker DJs such as T.Williams, Foamo, Gorgon City, Rudimental, Laurent Garnier, Breach, Monki amongst many more.

Forthcoming on WRHSmusic, the brand new label co-run by Unit7 is Codec's new 'Is It Something' EP available for download on 30th September via Beatport. Second release in and WRHSmusic have already been championed by Clash, Mixmag, Data Transmission, Daily Street, SBTV and more, and we can expect WRHS002 to follow in similar footsteps.

Opening the EP with a club ready record, Codec step things up with leading track 'Is It Something'. The trickling hi-hats and classic M1 organ tones and carefully layered with atmospheric synths, recreating and capturing everything we know and love about classic 90's dance music. Up next 'No More (1998)' enters with a pounding bassline and driving force which tackles things head on. Last but not least, 'Everyday' rounds the EP off perfectly with its clipped vocals, twinkling keys and throbbing bass.

Now the duo have their status firmly set we can look forward to hearing much more from this breakthrough pair who continue to represent UK talent in their own wonderful way. In the next few months Codec have gigs lined up at The Nest (Dalston), Coalition (Brighton), Sub Soul (Ibiza), Space Ibiza plus many more.

Having already made a splash on Hypercolour and Losing Suki back in 2012 (‘Eyes’ EP and ‘Flow Control’ EP respectively), Bareskin makes a return to the roost in November with a sure fire packet of three.

Lead track ‘Distorted Symmetry’ is a deadly slab of pacey and techy house, its vocal bringing in a decent amount of soul to the proceedings.  A proper modern day house record, the production is first class, its reverberating and glitchy beats working a treat amongst the deep melody.

‘The Shape Of It’ comes deeper than a wizards sleeve, a twisted vocal hook held up with fat pads left, right and center, the minimal beats almost lending a pure ambient vibe to this one.  Bareskin AKA Josh Thompson, signs off with the cosmically titled ‘I Was Born To A Woman From Space’, a meaty beatfest, evoking shades of Mood II Swing at their dubbiest, with some extra terrestrial flutterings and deft keys holding up another cracking female vox line, defo one for the erection section.

2013 has witnessed a lot of OFF's prodigal sons grow steadily into the global scene, joining new ventures and breaking a lot of boundaries. This weeks Track Of The Week comes courtesy of another DJ/Producer who was named in my Ones To Watch 2014 list. South Seven a Manchester based DJ/Producer who had his first release on Fat! Records at the back end of 2013 along with a string of other huge free downloads on his soundcloud page. This fast rising producer continues to impress by putting his spin on Klaue's & Tatze's 2013 smash Bringing It. 5 years ago Lokee started as a daytime gathering in a warehouse apartment in East London which quickly became London’s most respected and intimate Sunday setting. Fast forward to today & you have Lokee Musik - a record label that aims to capture the broad appreciation of music found at these famed private parties.

The first release comes in the form of Ejeca. A name that in recent months has caught the eyes & ears of Djs and ravers across the globe, mainly due to a fantastic debut on Will Saul’s AUS. The collaborative effort with Feel My Bicep titled ‘You’ captured a nostalgic 90s drum & bass/garage vibe that found its way into many Dj sets from all genres.

Ejeca’s Different Rules is another recall & homage to the 90’s with the classic piano stab at the heart of the action. Without a doubt, Different Rules captures not only a golden moment from the past, but what has been felt across many Sunday afternoons at the Lokee events.

On the flip side - Akrobat brings a very direct and minimal driven future garage groove to the floor with a strong emotive organ house bassline.

Longtime Lokee collaborator and friend since playing at their first ever party- Ekkohaus delivers a cunning reworking of the piano stabs for Different Rules which makes for a more moody and intense interpretation. Perfect peak-time action with a clever pause on the bass after the build, which adds extra excitement on the floor.

Eric Volta delivers an intelligent reinterpretation with his Akrobat remix. Adding more atmosphere and emotion to Ejeca’s melody from the original track whilst maintaining the original theme along with a lustrous demonstration of cleverly crafted analog synthesis.
