Chrissy Murderbot is already known as one of Chicago’s finest purveyors of juke and footwork, the man behind the Dead Homies and Sleazetone labels, and with releases on Planet Mu, Halocyan & more.  And he crops up here on Hypercolour under his Chris E Pants moniker, unveiling a superbly varied EP.

Lead track ‘Can’t Shake Loose’ takes no prisoners, a belting 909 kick and a disturbed acid line evokes shades of old school pioneers like D.H.S. and Green Velvet, touched by the hand of rave!  On ‘Tare’, Chris E Pants getting all melodic on us and all the better for it, a cool little heads down number…

Title track ‘Fallout’ is a sweeter affair, flecks of female vox over a sturdy house beat are held up with the mother of all b-lines and gnarly synth work, and on ‘Call Me You’, Chris takes it one deeper for a flute laden, tight jacker, slightly reminiscent of that classic Plez track (Can’t Stop).  

Judy Judy Judy follows the 4/4 path on this EP, all bleepy and moody vibes, and a killer one to finish off a well rounded and expertly executed Extended Player for Hypercolour.

Sehr smooth und synthblubberverliebt, der Titeltrack. Dazu noch dieser fast schon vergessene spanische Sprechgesang. Ach. Herzig. Und dabei übertreibt der Track nie, sondern bleibt immer vor allem smooth und bezaubernd. 

Ein Stück für die Afterhour auf Ibiza. Klar, aber dabei dennoch klingelnd glücklich. Und noch besser “Soledad”, auf dem die Synths erst mal die Hälfte des Tracks solo vor sich hin glucksen können. 

Der Remix von Bearweasel macht House draus, was mir im Zusammenhang mit der Stimme einen Hauch zu klassisch ist aber Pedramovich’s-Glass-Table-Remix hat etwas von einem geschliffen klaren Robert-Hood-Mix auf Abwegen.

Impérieux debuts on Hessle Audio with the Fena EP, an immersive collection of 4 tracks defined by his unpredictable and varied sonic palette. Drawing on a heritage that threads through Turkey, Greece and his home city of Kırcaali in Bulgaria, Alper Durmush channels a turbulent year in which six months of creative stillness ignited unexpectedly into an explosive burst of musical ideas.

"Fena is a word my Mum used to call me as a kid" recounts Durmush on the title track. "The name comes from Turkish, but with a Balkan twist, it means a mischievous rascal - wild, unpredictable, a bit too much at times". This restless energy is perfectly captured with jittering interferance and snarling sawtooth synths bursting through the mix, threatening to overwhelm the speakers and sending sound engineers running for cover. 'Sickomode' encapsulates the push-pull emotional sensibility of the EP, with confidence and meloncholy rotating, shifting, and giving way to each other.

'Saat' is an attempt to recreate a track based solely on a surreal description, relayed by a veteran of the rave scene in his home town - "This guy told me about a festival in the woods back in the early 2000s, where someone played a track with dogs barking in the break - the volume rising constantly." The initial dissonance of its detuned lead releases into a euphoric rush of melody, a combination which is becoming something of a producer trademark. The EP closes with the quiet, unwavering warmth of 'Cawuso', a nickname for a person that the artist met last year. "This very special person showered me with kindness and purity. It almost felt unreal, so I decided to dedicate this track to them."

CCL launches their subglow label with Rebuild, an EP from Bristol club provocateur @georg-i, featuring remixes from @Metrist and the elusive B. McQueen.

Rebuild is influenced by math rock's feverish and cataclysmic energy, eschewing conventional club BPMs in favour of dizzying tempo trickery and polymetric wizardry. “Torn In Two” gets off to a slow, chugging start, with raucous synths riffing over emphatic drums, but soon swirls into a juddering, pointillistic frenzy. “Bridging The Gap” is a cathartic shout, an acidic crescendo whose triplet meter offers tempo-transitioning opportunities for adventurous DJs who don’t mind a bit of maths. “Communication” gallops along cathartically through ricocheting synths and drums, unfolding into a thrilling breakdown. On remix duties, B. McQueen re-imagines “Torn In Two” as a sultry, dubbed-out roller, charting groove across a heady plain, while Metrist’s ambitious rework of “Communication” amps up the tension and primes it for a peak-time dancefloor sometime in the next millennium.

Frostbite

It's certainly one of my best recorded mixes. There were no imperatives, no obligations, no need to do this one. Just two afternoons, one to dig and one to record.

This mix transcribes my influences and my musical universe with enthusiasm. With lots of new tracks this time. 125 to 140 bpm.

We’re pretty used to ruthless but wonderous dancefloor weapons emerging from Sneaker Social Club these days, but even by their undeniably high standards, this four tracker from London producer Beton Brut is pretty special.  Following up on appearances on Plasma Sources and Coyote Records, he gets to work across four very different slices of atmospheric brutality.  Opener ‘4x4’ boasts rasping handclaps, bass stabs and deep kicks, like ‘Pulse XY’ on steroids, before ‘Tobacco Earthworm’ spits out its wonderfully chewed up, stop/start sparse grooviness.   Our favourite has to be MC-sampling ‘ESTLDN’, all apocalyptic, minimal weightless, before ‘Booters’ offers Eski-esque string drama and bass end pugilism, again with tightly edited MC snippets for extra punch.  A name to watch, on a label you’re doubltess already monitoring like a hawk.  Brut-al.
