Some Chilly Stuff

A Berlin legend that needs no further introduction, his knowledge in music is academic, a walking library by all means with credentials few DJs can hold a candle to, such as having been a member of The Ennio Morricone Society (MSV - Musica Sul Velluto) - seriously... @finn_johannsen brings us a two part mix of extensive research in Hip-Hop.

In his words: 
"I do not often play hip hop in clubs, but I have been listening to it since the 80s, and collecting it too. I love all kinds of hip hop, but the particular mid 90s to early 00s sound represented in these two mixes is the one I still listen to the most. I must admit that I adopted this sound quite late, as I previously preferred those records punchy and fast enough to be danced to at clubs playing disco, and then house. When the tempo slowed down in the 90s I was initially confused, well maybe even a bit annoyed. But soon enough I adapted to it, and recognized its very own appeal. Doing these mixes has occupied my mind for a while now, but it really came back to my mind during the lockdown, when I couldn't bear to listen to club music because it was just rubbing in what was missing from my life. Sometimes then I felt moody and frustrated as well, and the vibe of this helped me along. The grit, the wit, the roughness, the immensely varied and creative ways of making beats. I must admit the main purpose of these two mixes was to include all my favourite records, so I can listen to them in a row. Of course there are hip hop DJs who do that way better than me (you will probably notice that there is not a single scratch in the whole 7+ plus hours playtime, for example), and I salute them all. But I wanted to have my own personal soundtrack for whatever purpose I felt should be accompanied by this kind of music. I tried and tested it, and I am happy how well it works in different contexts, but they are all nocturnal. This is not really jiggy, mind. But I hope you like it nonetheless. The next PAS release comes via Mote-Evolver and it's three tracks of intergalactic techno sludge. It's dark, dingy and as industrial as a factory that makes robots designed to wipe out the human race.

We've got the premiere of 'Arc' and it's probably the gnarliest track on the EP. Both menacing and pulsating from the off, there's a wall of static in the background throughout and a breakneck pace that doesn't let up. Big.

Following on from the fervour and turmoil of last year’s “Your Charizmatic Self” EP, Night Slugs executive producer Bok Bok teams up with composer and keyboardist Sweyn Jupiter on a romantic new double A-side single. 

“Papaya Lipgloss” is a song about young love.

House Of Black Lanterns is the latest musical project from Dylan Richards, the man behind the King Cannibal and Zilla monikers (on the Ninja Tine and Warp Records labels respectively).  With an album and two singles out in 2013 on the highly respected Houndstooth label, Richards returns with a deadly EP for Hypercolour, backed with a very fine Mosca remix.  

In its Original Mix, ‘The Smack’ is a dense and atmospheric production, the slow pace and chugging bassline evoking shades of early Chicago house but with a thoroughly modern UK twist.  Filled with tension and drama, ‘The Smack’ is a big sounding record that cuts through so many genre sounds from dub techno to dubstep but sounds entirely individual and unique.  

Mosca steps up to the remix, following on from the launch of his new label Not So Much, and remixes for Alland Byallo and Sweatshop Boys.  Taking ‘The Smack’ up to an altogether skanking tempo, Mosca plummets the Basic Channel school of sound for the aptly titled ‘Dread At The Controls’ version.  Spring reverb all over the joint as Mosca works the droning synths and fire & brimstone vibes over a watertight, dub heavy workout.

‘Grey Leather Glass’ takes things up a notch, continuing the HOBL theme of dark & shadowy techno sounds with heaps of drama and sinister twists and turns, like some cinematic score to a Wes Craven slasher epic, and ‘8 Million Stories’ cuts up vocal chops, finger snaps and piano stabs over a brooding house production.   Deliciously dark music from HOBL here….

And we're back with another absolutely class one here. The 6th Sunday Sessions mix is brought to you by Sines of Change/Ezra of Oxford's GRO FM - who have been throwing quality parties in the city (and further afield) for years. These are usually (and rightly so) pretty lively affairs! However, I've chatted music with Ezra many times in the shop, and I'm well aware that a big part of his heart lies with the deeper/dubbier end of things. So while I knew roughly what to expect from this mix, I was blown away by the end result. Expect a nearly 2 hour meandering journey through a slew of warm, gently foot tapping sunny afternoon electronic bliss.

Which brings me to my final point! Ezra and GRO FM partner in crime Architek will be gracing us with the first 3 hours of the next Sunday Sessions on July 6th. These guys understand what these Sundays/Common Ground is all about, and will be setting the tone while we settle into those first few pints - and I can't wait.

Although expect it to get lively later too...
