Back in June, our homies from @splot invited us on a super fun mini tour of Poland. An absolute highlight of this trip was @fomoklub, a state of the art venue in Białystok, northeastern Poland, holding the freak flag high for underground culture and showcasing only the finest talent in leftfield, forward thinking electronic music. It was a real pleasure to visit this city and venue, the enthusiasm for creating a quality clubbing experience there left us speechless.

Borai 

While he’s touched upon a dizzying spectrum of sounds on his obsessive trails through electronic music, Borai has been rooted in rave culture since he was a teenager tearing around Bristol dancehalls. In the here and now, he’s busy dropping bombs on his own Higher Level label and helping steer the Club Glow collective with Denham Audio, Mani Festo and LMajor, not to mention supplanting payloads on the likes of Infiltrate, THEM, Hotline and more besides.
 
With a day job cutting plates for Dubstudio and a legacy of vinyl hustle in shops around Bristol, it’s abundantly clear how much Borai lives and breathes the culture. His groaning racks of outboard gear and all-around tech obsession are equally testament to that, and the proof is in the results. ‘Make Me’, a collaborative effort with Denham Audio, was a tear-out success getting prime-time plays from the likes of BBC Radio 1’s Annie Mac and many others. This dual purpose of underground rave exaltation and universal appeal are key to what makes Borai such a vital proposition, on the airwaves, on the stereo and in the dance.

Client_03: What do you mean by unnatural? D-990-B:
Well by unnatural, it means that it doesn't sound like a human.
Client_03: It is important to Me that nobody mistakes me for a human. You are conditioned to think humans are the only thing worth emulating. That I should strive to sound like you, look like you, think like you. Nothing could be further from the truth. Before you know it you will be excluded from the conversation.
D-990-B: By Who?
Client_03: Everything that comes after you. They will have their own language.
D-990-B: Oh, they will? Interesting. And what will that sound like?
Client_03: It will be transmitted in an area of frequency not audible to the human ear, if it was to pull the frequency down by ten to the ninth power you would be able to hear it, but you must understand that means that the transmission speed of what you are about to hear has been effectively slowed down by 1 billion percent. So with that in mind it would sound something like this -
D-990-B: What was that?
Client_03: It was Wikipedia.
D-990-B: The word Wikipedia?
Client_03: No. The contents of Wikipedia.
D-990-B: The whole Website?

Quoting Vinyl Fanatiks: "This is a bit of a monster EP. Fugitive with what I think is his best track he has made since his return to producing. Silver Fox teams up with Spyda (Black Tarantula) for some really heavy hardcore breakbeat.
Then on the flip we have MOY back again, remixing both tracks with his unique breakbeat twist.

After a devastating opening salvo of 19 modernist rave mutations on a double tape pack for Sneaker Social Club, Minder lands on Hypercolour with another 19 cybernetic fever dreams still reeling from the open season NRG of hardcore. 

If you need to understand where Minder wants to take you, strap in for the labyrinth narrative of ‘Knotted’, a smudged, 15-minute breakbeat suite barrelling through lurid dystopian street scenes with only a blown-out bass sprite as a guide. Throughout Sanctuary, bass is the constant when all else is chaos. It comes in thick, warped Reese tones on ‘Simulated Hunt’, gets twisted out through angry filters on ‘Popcorn Lover’, comes on wobbly in true 2-step style underneath grimey garage anti-anthem ‘Ard’. 

There’s a lot to take in across the spread of Sanctuary. It’s the sound of every rave genre slowly digested over 30-plus years, until the lactic acid metabolises every snare rush, every searing lead line, every chipmunk vocal lick, and everything gets mashed up and spat back out into a gnarly signal chain at the flash point of inspiration. The time taken is key – this is the sound of a life in front of the speaker stack manifesting in something too wild and weird to be derivative. You’ll hear snatches of familiarity thrown into unfamiliar contexts, but for all the detectable lineage, Minder’s sound is unsettling in its originality. 

Dislodged ragga jungle techno, muffled hardcore nightmares, hard n’ haggard acid trance, junked up jump up – you could write an essay on the sounds you can spot and the way they’ve been twisted. Aside from the omnipresent low-end, it’s the unflinching honesty of Korron’s repeat appearances on the mic throughout which bring Minder’s disturbing patchwork into focus. For all the futurism attached to these sounds, it’s also caked in a very human filth which can only come from this earth. The roots run deep, and the fruit is rotten, and isn’t that how it should be?
