We’re pretty used to ruthless but wonderous dancefloor weapons emerging from Sneaker Social Club these days, but even by their undeniably high standards, this four tracker from London producer Beton Brut is pretty special.  Following up on appearances on Plasma Sources and Coyote Records, he gets to work across four very different slices of atmospheric brutality.  Opener ‘4x4’ boasts rasping handclaps, bass stabs and deep kicks, like ‘Pulse XY’ on steroids, before ‘Tobacco Earthworm’ spits out its wonderfully chewed up, stop/start sparse grooviness.   Our favourite has to be MC-sampling ‘ESTLDN’, all apocalyptic, minimal weightless, before ‘Booters’ offers Eski-esque string drama and bass end pugilism, again with tightly edited MC snippets for extra punch.  A name to watch, on a label you’re doubltess already monitoring like a hawk.  Brut-al.

Meet your weekend companion: ZSA ZSA Mix No. 09 by our dear friend @elias069! We’re thrilled that Offenbach’s sweet-heart joins our mix series. He delivers a percussive, bass-heavy ride with dubbed-out depths. This mix moves with intuition and joy – the perfect soundtrack for a lovely weekend.

2015 has been a massive year for Hypercolour, with the label releasing a huge range of music from established names (Kerrier District & Luke Vibert, Seth Troxler, Roman Flugel) as well as up-and-comers of the underground music scene (Luca Lozano, A Sagittariun, House Of Black Lanterns).  The eclecticism of the laberl knows no boundries, and so it’s fitting to end the year with a killer EP from Modini.

A collaborative project between techno visionary, Neil Landstrumm, and fellow Scottish producer, Hostage, Modini plunder the deeper shades of techno and electro music, bringing with them years of musical nouse for labels like Peacefrog, Tresor, Origami Sound and Nightshifters.  Previous Modini releases have appeared on the Dixon Avenue Basement Jams imprint.

‘The Answer (Version)’ touches on the classic side of electro, with the infectious “how do you get to sleep at night” vocal hook rolling over incessant bleeps and chugging 4x4 beats, coming over like a pitched down Relief Records cut for the modern age. Its Original Mix makes fine use of broken beats, twisting and loosening the other version whilst retaining the energy of the original.

The impressively titled ‘Impressive Pineapple’ ratchets up the tempo, rolling brats and head scrambling bleep-work tussles with a hefty bass line and choppy vocals.  Final cut ‘Saluting Magpies’ features more bass line madness and drilling drums, imaginatively off the wall samples jab in between the spaces and we’re shown a masterclass in forward thinking dance music from the Modini team.

Gary (who also goes by the name Slikk Tim) hails not from the streets of Detroit, Oakland or Atlanta, but from the post-industrial city of Nancy, France. While he might be a relatively new name as a producer, he’s got plenty of experience as a session musician for the likes of Dâm-Funk and Orlando Voorn, as well as having played for Los Hermanos, the project headed by Gerald Mitchell of Underground Resistance.

Indeed, it was Voorn who introduced Gary to Underground Resistance’s Mad Mike, who helped get him his first deal on Clone Records. Now Gary’s newest slice of futuristic electro funk – The Sugar Cane Chronicles Vol. 1 - is being released on Hypercolour next month.

The EP’s not out until 1st April (no foolin’) but we’ve got the exclusive premiere of the lead track, ‘Preachin’ Some Tight Game’. A super-groovy blend of fluttering jazz chords, silky caramel bass, and raw drum programming courtesy of Gary’s trusted 606. Topped off with a squiggly little G-funk melody that’ll worm its way inside your skull and set up shop for the spring.

Gritty modern funk from Gary Gritness, aka Slikk Tim and drummer for CF favourites, DopeGems. Cosigned by UR's "Mad" Mike Banks, Gritness has previously released music on Clone and My Love is Underground, and now drops four analogue funk monsters for the UK house & techno label, Hypercolour.

From dark to sweet, the funk is prevalent over all four tracks. We're happy to share Working Girls, the sweetest cut for us.

PREMIERE: Gary Gritness - Working Girls

With two releases already under his belt on Clone, Gary Gritness AKA Slikk Tim lands on Hypercolour with “The Sugar Cane Chronicles Vol. 1”.

Gritness may be a relatively new name on the block, but his session work for artists like Kenny Bobien, Louie Vega and Grant Nelson has marked up this multi-instrumentalist as a clear talent.  Hailing from France, Gritness had been spotted by Underground Resitance’s ‘Mad’ Mike Banks as ‘one to watch’, and on his Hypercolour release, displays a deft hand of producing futuristic funk sounds. 

A spot on blend of raw drum programming and blissfull jazz funk riffs, “Preachin Some Tight Game” sets the EP’s tone just right with its infectious melodies and cruising groove.  Darker 1980’s soundtrack vibes are explored on “Stayin’ Strong Hand” with its thick analogue atmosphere, whilst the laid back and freestyle vibes of “Working Girls” demands to be played in the Cadillac with the top down!  EP closer, “Fly Shit”, continues with the tranquil melodies and G-Funk factor.
