It’s with great pride (and a certain sense of defiance!) that Tom and I present
you with the 200th Freerange release. Despite the best efforts of three bankrupt
distributors, an arsonist (who set the Sony warehouse ablaze back in 2012) and a
volatile market, we retained the fire in our bellies, a stiff upper lip, and most
importantly an unrelenting passion for electronic music, we soldiered on and here
we are at Freerange 200!
To mark the occasion we wanted to put together a compilation of exclusive new
tracks from both long-standing Freerange regulars as well as some fresh artists
to the label whose music we’ve been loving.  Being committed to vinyl we figured
the best way would be to do a two part release with four-tracks on each part.

Turning to Part B we open with a brilliant track with almost as good a title;
Hamburglar from Luv Jam.  This guy has been responsible for killer cuts on
esteemed labels such as We Play House, Tsuba and Phonica White so we wanted in on
the action and thankfully he indulged us.  We absolutely love the raw simplicity
of this track which bumps along just perfectly with not much more than a kick,
clap and single note bass line to keep you grooving. Apart from the repeating
piano stab hooking you in and sending people nuts when everything drops out in
the break that is.
Esa & Mervin Granger come next with the sublime deepness of Goema Heat.  Esa’s
proudly wearing his Cape Town roots on his sleeves on this one and as the title
suggests, has come up with the perfect track to warm up any party worth it’s
salts. We’re talking heavy on the percussion and tantalizing synth FX and a
lovely tension which builds subtly before taking things up a gear after the
breakdown when the bouncing bassline comes to the fore.
It’s fare to say a Freerange release such as this wouldn’t be complete without a
Manuel Tur contribution, so while we’ve been busy putting together his
forthcoming Remix Retrospective LP we’re happy to say Manuel found the time to
put together this gem entitled Laguenesie.
And last but not least we have Kito Jempere with his track This Is Why We Do This
featuring Detroit luminary Jerry The Cat.  St. Petersburg native Kito drops
serious heat on this raw and dubby club jam which we feel is probably as close to
an ‘archetypal’ Freerange track as it’s possible to get so sums up this special
release perfectly.

Sophisticated minimalism was always a core feat of ALEX UNDER's portfolio, with the Spanish producer also serving as the founder and label manager for much-acclaimed techno label CMYK Musik. After releases on iconic imprints such as Trapez, Soma or Plus 8, the Madrilenian - one of the most sought-after electronic artists in Spain - now presents OLAS DE QUILA QUINA, his very first outing for Kompakt. Three slick, enticing cuts show him comitted to rolling basslines, rising synths and snappy percussion, all embedded in the futuristic sound design Alex has been honing over the course of his career. Unfolding to the backdrop of brooding metallic drones, the title track only needs a handful of carefully processed sounds to tell a highly evocative story - a focussed, geometrical jam that nonetheless allows for freewheeling outbursts of creativity. The same can be said for the punching, asymmetrical acid of EL REFLEJO DEL LACAR and the full-bodied bass bounce of LOLOG, as both cuts juxtapose sharp-edged shards of electronic texture with chewy, melodic synths. Premiere: Eluize - Up All Night [Night Tide]

The Cyclist produces, what he has termed, “Tape Throb”; musical excursions into techno dance that echo the production techniques and warm sounds of the electronic pioneers, taking his cues from the likes of Throbbing Gristle and Boards Of Canada.  His releases to date on labels like Stones Throw, All City Records, Music Is For Losers and Crash Symbols have seen him rack up four full length albums (including under his Buz Ludzha moniker) with plenty more juice in the tank, as his debut on Hypercolour attests to.

“Pressing Matters” harks back to the golden age of breakbeat; bendy synths and pliable bass smack in the face of brain melting breaks, delivered with energy and a very authentic touch.    A hugely unique sound and without frontiers, it’s a cut that will cross genres with ease. 

Robag Wruhme never fails to disappoint as a producer/remixer; his purple patch seems to show no sign of letting up, with releases on Pampa, Kompakt and remixes for Stimming, Alter Ego and Paul Kalkbrenner.  His remix of “Pressing Matters” masterfully flips from its breaks origins into a twisted four to the floor belter, with grandiose touches and church like organs giving it a spiritual spin.

“Back In ‘92” will indeed evoke memories 24 hour pirate radio output and raving in fields, and for those who weren’t there first time around, it’s a cut that’s as fresh and vital sounding today as it ever was, with light piano riffs and melodious keys over the choppy drums.

Featuring the vocal talents of Tanaya Harper, “Push” closes the EP in fine style; intricate drum patterns and rolling snares jar against the ethereal vocal performance and brooding synths, a quintessentially British type of production and one that treads similar territory to Jamie XX’s recent pathos to UK rave culture.
