Hyperituals is part of the new research path undertaken by Hyperjazz Records. Entirely curated by Khalab - Raffaele Costantino, HJ’s founder and head of A&R - Hyperituals is a philological investigation that delves deeply into the musical influences and cultural roots of the young Italian label. The theme that runs through Hyperituals is the exploration of the possibilities of sound, rhythm, remix, and endless sampling. Inspiring listening, interpretation, and reinterpretation. Is it an exercise in crate-digging that explores the past of some of the most important yet sometimes forgotten record labels and aims to bring to light music that is contemporary both in its sound and its message.

The first stage of this journey is represented by Black Saint/Soul Note, an Italian ‘double’ label based in Milan that, since the 1970s and throughout the 1980s, established itself as one of the most important imprints for international jazz.
Founded respectively in 1975 by Giacomo Pellicciotti and in 1979 by Giovanni Bonandrini (to whom Pellicciotti sold Black Saint in 1977), Black Saint and Soul Note have represented a safe haven for incredible and brilliant artists who were unable to find their space elsewhere.

By combining jazz tradition with the political vanguard sentiment of the time, the two sister labels were able to press and produce more than five hundred records (still available today - the catalogue is now owned by CAM Jazz), many of which are by some of the brightest names in creative jazz or the ‘avant-garde’ of the era.
Black Saint and Soul Note always placed the artists, their visions, and their music at the center, giving them total freedom of creative expression. It is thanks to this constant, cutting-edge and meticulous commitment that today we have some of the shiniest musical gems by Sun Ra, Archie Shepp, Don Cherry, Max Roach, Anthony Braxton, David Murray, and many others. And it is this long list of jazz gods and idols that led the two labels to be recognized as the best in the world by critics, winning the DownBeat Critics Poll for Best Record Label for six years in a row, from 1984 to 1990, conquering the American market.

This first double gatefold vinyl volume is entirely dedicated to the Soul Note catalogue. Khalab’s selection - focused on rhythms, grooves and Afrocentric traditions - demonstrates how this music, through its sensibility, can renew our connection to the present in unexpected ways. As the curator and music critic Enrico Bettinello writes in the compilation’s liner notes, in this volume “we find moments of ecstasy, irresistible percussive webs, fiery solos, poetic awareness, and magical ritual lyricism.”

A second volume focused on the Black Saint catalogue is already in the works.

Acclaimed guitarist and composer Adriano Viterbini makes his debut on Hyperjazz Records: ‘Solitario Solidale’ is his new work, a cathartic sonic ritual that conjures up evocative and striking atmospheres from an imaginary nonplace, a desert without geographical coordinates. A feeling of unreality, like a magical suspension of time.
A project that found in Hyperjazz Records the perfect experimental platform, where the artist has been able to express his own vision without any limitation and boundaries.

Out on May 6th and distributed exclusively in digital (in audio and video format), ‘Solitario Solidale’ contains an original track (“Trash Of Europe”) and two tribute tracks dedicated to two phenomenal artists: the Ethiopian pianist Emhaoy Tsegue’-Maryam Guèbrou (“The Homeless Wanderer”) and the Detroit rocker Ted Lucas (“Plain & Sane & Simple Melody”).

This EP has also really significant assets in its visual part. In fact, each track is accompanied by a video clip realized by some of the best Italian directors and videomakers of nowadays: Donato Sansone (“Trash Of Europe”), Dandeddy (“The Homeless Wanderer”), Paulonia Zumo (“Plain & Sane & Simple Melody”).

‘Solitario Solidale’ has taken shape from sonic experiments that Adriano Viterbini did in 2020 with the help of Marco Fasolo (I Hate My Village, Jennifer Gentle). Using an African ngoni (gifted to Adriano by the Ghanaian musician Mamah Diabate), a custom acoustic guitar, a bass and other instruments, the sound was filtered with projector amps, chip pedal effects, Whatsapp audio files and rawly recorded using a 90’s Korg cassette recorder.

The name of the EP is explained directly by the words of the artist himself: “The name ‘Solitario Solidale’ is inspired by the Albert Camus’ short story ‘Jonas, ou l’artiste au travail’ that I always read when I need a moment of consolation and reassurance”.

Hyperjazz Records is in a constant state of musical progression and never stops exploring ever-changing languages.
Welcoming in its family the fresh collective FUCK!LACRÈME, the Italian label continues its investigation of contemporary music's frantic and unrestrained evolution.

In the Hyperjazz world, electronic experimentation clashes with the (close and distant) instrumental traditions, engendering new and evolved syntheses and hybridizations. This new work "FLAC! Vol. 2" perfectly encapsulates the idea. These four instrumental tracks essentially could be classified as footwork bangers but they also contain many other influences from jazz, soul and r'n'b, funk, and even punk and Brazilian music.

All the collective's members worked at their best following the common flow, experimenting with new ways of sampling and beat making. Passing from hand to hand - subjected to various editing, cutting and distortion treatments - each track has had a unique and detailed creative development.

The final result is a collection of absolute dance floor bangers!

'The Word Was Made Phresh' is the name of Phresoul’s new album, out on March 22nd on Hyperjazz Records. Seven instrumental tracks, tight and essential, which bring into sharp focus the talent and versatility of one of recent years’ most interesting groups in the jazz, hip-hop, and alternative-rock scenes. 
The new project by the trio dismantles jazz’s traditional rules, absorbs influences and contemporary sounds and portrays with lucid irony the contradictions and conflicts of our times. This record comes two years after their debut 'Metempsychosis', and solidifies Phresoul’s sound, where noise-rock improvisations coexist with neo-psychedelia, abstract hip-hop and space-jazz.

Phresoul - The Word Was Made Phresh [HJ001]

TRNT (out on June 21st) is the first attempt at reworking the Tarantella tradition by Go Dugong. It  is a collection of tunes inspired by his home town, Taranto. The tracks are Salinella, Tamburi, ILVA, Lama, named after some of the places, be they villages or neighborhoods, that were part of his youth down there. The contexts are made of wildly beautiful seascapes, social architecture, but also high pollution caused by the exploitive steel industry close by. Beauty mixed with bad health.

This long trip, started years ago, today has brought him back to his home land, to re-elaborate and synthesize memories, images and tales from his fellow countrymen and women.

It’s a story about an obsessive research on contaminations between Southern Italy rhythms and melodies and North African atmospheres. Written by Machweo and performed in studio with his jazz ensemble (electronics, sax, electric guitar and drums).

DJ KNUF is the Rome-based producer and deejay Maurizio Bilancioni. This EP, coming out on 24th January, is the perfect outcome from the combination of his biggest passions: hip hop - and all its contaminations with jazz, soul, funk and electronica - and clubbing. Made with the collaboration of the NYC's MC and poet Malik Work (The Real Live Show), this is the first EP off a larger work dedicated to the hip house and its pioneers. 

Throughout the 2020, Hyperjazz Records is going to release a series of EPs by Knuf, all dedicated to the genre born in Chicago and raised in New York between the end of the 1980s and the beginning of 1990s. Dance floor killer tracks, a must-haves for every records bag!

'If You Say You Are From This Planet, Why Do You Treat It Like You Do?' is the brand-new album by Tommaso Cappellato's Astral Travel out on 20th March for Hyperjazz Records. 

Inspired by the poetry of Sun Ra inscribed within the pages of the book “This Planet Is Doomed”, the music and lyrics focus on the current consciousness of the planet, raising questions and issues of humanity’s collective spiritual direction. The body of work contained in this album is the result of numerous live-in-studio improvisations, deconstructed in a meticulous post-production process by avant-garde electronic producer Rabih Beaini. Vocalists Dwight Trible and Camilla Battaglia sing and declaim the poems, which are enveloped in a spontaneous musical magma. Each piece is collectively created by Tommaso Cappellato on drums along with pianist Fabrizio Puglisi, reeds player Piero Bittolo Bon, who also contributes to the electronic soundscape, and double bassist Marco Privato.

Over 2500 years ago in Athens, the Dionysia was a large festival in honor of the god Dionysus. It was the second-most important festivity in the city-state, and probably the best symbol of the cosmopolitism and modernity of the ancient Greek culture and society. It was an extraordinary event involving the whole population (even the inmates were temporary free) in order to integrate marginalised people and consolidate social cohesion. The Dionysia was also an essential part of the Dionysian Mysteries, an esoteric and mystic ritual - whose origins are lost in time - which used trance-inducing techniques (like dance and music) to remove inhibitions and social constraints, allowing the individual to return to a natural state.

Passionate about beatmaking, punk, and Greek mythology, using his Mpc2000 like a stargate, Kidd Mojo tries to lead the 'Dionysia'’s listeners into a very personal noisy journey through vintage sampling techniques, hip-hop beats, futuristic synths melted with hints of Afrobeat and jazz. An imaginary world, shaped by a modern ritual that encompasses past, present, and future and helps people reach their inner self through sound.
