Stalwarts of the UK house music scene, the Mutiny duo of Rob Davy and Dylan Barnes initially surfed the second wave of UK house music alongside the likes of Basement Jaxx and X-Press 2. Starting off releasing on their own Sunflower Records in the late 1990s, they soon signed to Virgin offshoot VC Recordings and released the singles ‘Secrets’ and ‘The Virus’ — which both cracked the UK Top 50 — and the acclaimed ‘In The Now’ album.

Moving onto Underwater Records, the successful independent label helmed by ex-Underworld producer Darren Emerson, they released the ‘Yada Yada’ album and began touring the world, scoring residencies in Ibiza and Japan along the way. They’ve rocked many parties in far-flung territories ever since, as well as notching up production and remix work for labels such as Southern Fried, Azuli, Axtone, Ovum, Detone, Skint and lots more.

When Mutiny played their track ‘Invade’ to the Jack Said What bosses, they signed it on the spot. At the harder end of their spectrum, ‘Invade’ is a powerhouse of a track with a driving other-worldly bassline, alien bleepery and a slightly sinister sci-fi vox commenting on some sort of Martian invasion – “Invade”. Beware the little green men!

Mutiny UK - Invade

This is the track that gave the label its name. Legendary producer Steve Mac, once half of renowned house music production duo the Rhythm Masters, had this burbling electronic house cut in his locker as he and his label cohorts were sat around in the pub trying to think of a name for their new label. They retired back down to Steve’s Bunker studio to listen to forthcoming label tunes, and the name for the label soon became clear. 

With its “Jack said what” sample — a nod to the foundational house pillar of the mid-1980s — ‘Jack Said What’ moves from raw house cut to acid-tinged dancefloor slayer, as the 303 and fizzy electro bassline take control. It’s guaranteed to make any cheeky purple cat smirk. 

This is the first release by Steve Mac under his own name for half a decade and is the first single taken from his forthcoming album ‘Bless This Acid House’, which includes collabs with some big house music legends. A UK house music heavy hitter himself, Steve has remixed the likes of Jamiroquai and Michael Jackson over the years and has recently been releasing under the name These Machines — a tribute to the amount of vintage analogue hardware he has in his studio in order to produce and expertly mix down his tracks.

To everyone who read Subculture Vulture and everyone who didn't here is a mix of every artist I mentioned in the chapter on my time in (and the history of) the Rave World. I would for sure have written it differently if i'd known I would be undertaking trying such a headache inducing musical project. C&C Music Factory and Sven Väth don't exactly flow together naturally. It's not perfect but it's pretty dang good and a true time traveling trip through the history of dance music- some of these tracks are before my time and some of them are after my time but all of them "slap" as people who are from after my time are wont to say. Im proud of this mix and more than that wanted to give a gift to everyone who bought the book (enough to make it a national best seller!!!) Each chapter was a love letter and my time in the Rave Scene, promoting and djing taught me more about how to love and be loved than maybe any of the other worlds I have traveled through on my weird ass life journey. When i completed writing the chapter on raves I bought a DJ controller and dove back into a hobby and a world I'd left behind. So, in that way, this mix is the direct result of my book. In this installment of Sound Advice, we’re joined by Bicep, the Belfast-born, London-based duo whose deft blend of house, trance and breaks have made them some of the UK’s most acclaimed live electronic performers. After two albums on the Ninja Tune label — 2017’s self-titled and 2021’s ‘Isles’ — and years of touring, they’re now back in their studio, working on their club-focused ‘CHROMA’ series and forthcoming album. We caught up with Matt McBriar and Andy Ferguson from their studio to discuss their genre-agnostic influences, their musical evolution as Bicep, the creative challenges of having a digital and analog studio, and how they’ve used SoundCloud to grow as artists.

Hailing from Los Angeles & DJing since 1992 under a variety of pseudonyms, Hyperlapse, formerly known as DJ Caviar [Van Chagai Bollé], sometimes known as Rhythm Mode, has spun, raved, and documented the scene throughout the US and Europe. An old skool raver to the core, he's been a rave promoter, radio music director, nightclub manager, and a scene documentarian, experiencing rave culture on the regular since the days of it's early underground inception in Los Angeles. His somewhat legendary curated flyer collection was featured at the History of Rave Culture exhibit at the site of the original Woodstock Festival, and Moby & Vice just featured some of his footage from his Club Sugar days in the late 90's for a promo documentary. He's produced tracks over the years exclusively for his personal use & for the past 15 years he's been chilling out out in Upstate New York, doing the family thing & running a fashion boutique with his wife. 

Style:
Currently, his mixes pull from new tracks and productions, with the tendency to drop in the occasional flashback and nods to his OG rave roots.
