HYPER OPAL is a multinational post-rock, electronica pop-hybrid comprised of Marie Hoffmann (V4NT4BL4CK) and Tidiane Cacique (Leave Things) who are the co-creators of Nordpath Records. Combining the unique elements of their native lands (Germany and France), the duo's sound is focused on the remains of humanity as seen through a technological line of sight, that is in part fueled by the progressive environment of Berlin. The moody vocals of Marie Hoffmann come to the listener as if her spirit were trapped inside the water, her soul wandering the woodlands. This combined with the passionate, sometimes rebellious, haunted rhythms of Tidiane creates a style of music some refer to as empathy-driven "Tech Noir”. The duo deliver their debut album on the new Swiss imprint Blizzard Audio Club this September following on from releases from Pavel and E&A Rüeger, ‘Voyage au Bout de la Nuit’ employs dark, murky soundscapes peppered with subdued yet inviting melodies, raw drums and Marie Hoffman’s intoxicating vocals alluring you from start to finish. “Voyage au Bout de la Nuit is inspired by the same-named book from Louis-Ferdinand Céline in which the protagonist is drawn into various hells (World War 1, colonized Africa, NY, a suburb of Paris, as a practicing doctor for the poor and finally director of psychiatry). The recurrent theme is the darkness combined with solitude in which he wanders. Even in a moment he is with a woman who accepts him and there is mutual love, he searches discomfort, is incapable of settling. He is never arriving (only at last when he is old and his lyrical doppelganger dies); he has to go his own way, and there is no guide in his night or hell. Life as walking in complete darkness. This theme I projected onto life in big cities with their active nightlife, but also relatively, the largest amounts of singles, their greater anonymity and loneliness. It may seem on the one hand that our lives are determined by events we have no control over, but on the other hand we have a strong desire to grow personally and interact, which also implies that we have to sense our own way in darkness. A personal way is a path that no one walked before. We may fail, but should never give up.” HYPER OPAL

‘A Light Speed’ is a deeply emotive cut featuring brooding vocals and rousing pads that shine underneath all in harmony with shoegaze laced atmospheres and hypnotic melodies fluttering throughout.
“We started to create this song in summer 2018, which was the first remarkable hot and dry summer. For months there had been no rain and everyone who does not live too much in the city bubble knew the price of this dryness will be paid by the flora and fauna for long-term. Gras, bushes, young trees with insufficiently deep roots were suffering and died. The thistles I walk on represent this dryness and pain, and the sentimentality when remembering the former green meadow. In early autumn we went to Dordogne (countryside in France) where you could get a real impression of what is going on in the nature. Dried out rivers and meadows, yellow was the new green. Not one year later Friday for Future was called out and more protests than ever opened up. We know that we caused this extreme climate, but in the moment it arrives, we are defenseless and delivered. I shot there a series of overexposed pictures. So, the only thing I could do was to document the horror and try to calm down.” - HYPER OPAL

The street outside felt eerily quiet, an unfamiliar occurrence in this central part of town. Where families normally dined on alfresco tables and friends huddled together chain-smoking cigarettes, there was nothing, nobody, not even one straggler finding their way home. She watched from her window with unease, she'd got used to the howling laughter and drunken chatter that preceded sundown, it made her feel safe and happy. Without it there was only fear. 

Comprised of Nordpath co-founders, V4NT4BL4CK Marie Hoffman and Tidiane Cacique of Leave Things, Hyper Opal is a collaborative project that explores the realms of post-rock and electronic pop. Following their debut EP BLACK MILK last year, they deliver their debut album A Light Speed for Swiss imprint Blizzard Audio Club. Matching Hoffman's moody vocals with Cacique's eerie rhythms, over the LP's seven tracks the pair seek to explore "a dialog between the human-made messiness that spreads out and the will to be naive, playful, and having no script."
