ARA-U & Radioactive Man turn a bad situation into a great collection of tracks with their latest collaborative release The Houghton Blues EP. Across two sides of vinyl on ARA-U's NO STATIC / AUTOMATIC label, the accomplished electro innovators once again serve up pure analogue vibes and raw machine funk.

When cult Norfolk gathering Houghton Festival was cancelled in 2019 because of high winds, this pair had just bought some booze and were already on their way. After a moment's sadness, they decided to turn bad news into good and head to the studio to work on some tracks. For the next two days, they stayed high on music as their Prophet, 101, 808, 303, and the Juno synths whirred and flashed.

ARA-U, of course, is the UK-based Venezuelan and longtime hardare specialist. He runs his own NO STATIC / AUTOMATIC label and, like Radioactive Man with whom he has already collaborated on the Plastic Attack EP, he is a master of his machines. dBridge, Posthuman and Alienata have all played his music before now and he remains at the heart of underground electro.

Right there with him is Radioactive Man, who has a career spanning 30 years, labels like Warp and many seminal collaborations from Two Lone Swordsman with Andrew Weatherall, with dBridge as dBRm and Billy Nasty as RadioNasty. He is a hugely prolific producer who has kept the quality levels high across five solo albums and countless EPs. He now heads up his own Asking For Trouble label and continues to innovate in the studio thanks to his live approach to making music.

This is a reissue of a short-lived and obscure UK dance music label. A compilation of tracks featured on releases across 3 EP’s between 1991 and 1993 incorporating recently emergent dub techno and progressive acid house sounds. Nation of Noise was conceived in the early 90's, following a meeting of minds between the producer Django and vocalist Jon Martin at the legendary Soho institution: The Brain. 

Plate 1 is a fully remastered reissue of the first Nation of Noise record - Xes Noiz, featuring 4 locked grooves. 

Plate 2 takes two tracks off both the Lockgroove and Super Bubble EP's. One side is smooth, after-hours deep house whilst the other reaches for two progressive, acid cuts. 

Fun facts: 

- Feel the Joy received airtime by Jon Peel on Radio 1 and Elvis Stole My Space Hopper was a favourite of Colin Faver and Colin Dale on KISS FM 
- Kris Needs awarded Xes Noiz record of the week in NME, putting it in the same group as Weatherall and Aphex! 
- Riley Reinholdt raved about Xes Noiz in legendary German publication Spex and travelled to U.K. to interview Jon and Django. 
- Piano Tilt was a playlist favourite of Derrick May 
- Progressive acid house pioneers like Scott Hardkiss began lauding the Nation of Noise imports on the West-Coast sound systems of the San Francisco Bay Area. 
- The A3 of Xes Noiz was a minor hit on the emerging jungle/breakbeat scene. DJ's used to pitch it up before Metalheadz and Photek really defined that abstract sound. 

Nation of Noise 91 - 93 is the first of many records to be released by Seven Hills.

Brianna Price turned plenty of heads when, earlier in 2020, she swapped out her well-worn B.Traits moniker for the new title of Baby T. A change of name also signalled a departure from the booming techno-centred sound Price had been pedalling as B.Traits - she promised, all guns blazing, that Baby T was about ‘hardcore junglist shit only’. The project’s debut drop, an EP for Samurai Music entitled Portra, put that manifesto into action, running the gauntlet of darkside drum ‘n’ bass, ardcore soundsystem techno and dark ambient.

From the whip-crack electronic drums which usher in Baby T’s second record I Against I it is apparent that we’re in for another wild ride. Emerging here via Central Processing Unit, Price meets the CPU sound halfway on I Against I’s A-side, delivering two super-snappy broken-beat electro joints which both have a malevolent, dystopian edge to them. The levels are high from the off, with opener ‘I Wish’ fronting nasty, high-wire machine-funk that draws its strength from the Bunker, Djax-Up-Beats and BPitch Control sounds. ‘Acid Science’, another helter-skelter melange of needling synths and vocal licks, follows. Though this track’s title may promise acid, the snaking bassline refuses to lock fully into the perpetual-motion madness of a TB-303. Instead, Baby T chops the lick up to move in and out of the drums, an effect that has one thinking of Cardopusher.

‘Estrogen Attitude’, the tune which kicks off I Against I’s second-half, is an even headier brew. The intro skulks and broods, a pulsing kick-drum and intermittent 303 whirring in a cavernous atmosphere. You get the sense that something is brewing, especially given that the tempo has increased to junglist speed. However, when the breakbeats do enter Baby T opts to lurk rather than strike, locking into the sort of murky drum ‘n’ bass roll that wouldn’t sound out of place on the UVB-76 imprint. This is jungle to shadowbox to.

The vibe of ‘Estrogen Attitude’ is inverted on EP closer ‘We Could Disappear’. Beginning with a grainy, mournful ambience that recalls Biosphere and Kevin Martin, the track gently unfurls with the introduction of synthetic strings and muted breakbeats. If ‘Estrogen Attitude’ was indebted to Metalheadz, there is plenty of Goldie’s more grandiose soundscaping running through ‘We Could Disappear’. At the end of the track, the atmospheres dissolve to leave only the hum of sub - both a reminder of the bassweight principles that drive the Baby T project, and also representative of how I Against I has progressively etherised itself across its four tracks.

Baby T’s Central Processing Unit debut I Against I tackles dystopian electro, impressionistic drum ‘n’ bass and dark ambient, all while adhering to junglist principles. This is a brave new world for both the artist and the label.

The second part of two additional EPs in Delsin's Eevo Lute re-issue program includes a full 45 rpm cut of the Wladimir M. classic 'Evil'. On the b-side a fresh and drum heavy interpretation of 'Planet E' by Skee Mask. With almost non of the original parts available Skee Mask turns Wladimir's vocal lines up side down and transforms it into a 140 bpm breakbeat monster. Closer of the EP is the strong and emotive 'Disappointment' track, for first time on a vinyl single.
