Imagine this; it’s the morning of the works Christmas party, you call in sick …….. you call in sick because just the thought of standing around talking socially with people that you work normally with every day …. makes you feel physically sick. 


Now many people are shy; certainly most of us get nervous when faced with situations that take us out of our comfort zone such as giving a speech, or going for a job interview or even just meeting new people.  All of these things are normal but when these anxieties affect you to such an extent that the fear of embarrassment prevents you from doing the normal things of life then this condition is known as social anxiety.

So what is social anxiety?
It is a recognised condition ….. and in brief it is an intense fear of being judged by others.  If you suffer from social anxiety you may be exceptionally self-conscious and sensitive to being humiliated or embarrassed by doing something which will cause other people to judge you in a critical or mocking way….. and in order to prevent these situations occurring you are probably avoiding people and situations to such an extent that your life is virtually on hold.

Research indicates that at least 5% of the population suffers from social anxiety so you are certainly not alone.   Social anxiety can affect us at any age but often starts in childhood or adolescence, it can affect our early social and academic development and may not be noticed until we are older and the effects by then have become deep rooted.

 As an adult, social anxiety  prevents us from seizing life’s opportunities in meeting people, building careers , developing relationships and having families.    Sometimes the fear of speaking to others may even prevent us from seeking help from our doctors or other specialists.  However, your life can be changed forever once you understand that what others think of you is only their perception and cannot hurt you unless you choose to allow it to do so.  This programme can help you change your mind-set and patterns of behaviour. You will find yourself capable of speaking confidently and eloquently and enjoy meeting and speaking to others as an equal….. and it isn’t as hard as you think.

My anxiety story (part 2)

“I Overcame My Anxiety, Now Let Me Help You”

This is the second in the series of short videos that I’ve made on anxiety and panic attacks and of course they come to you free of charge. 

Now I thought I’d give you a brief overview of my own experiences so that you know I do understand how you feel, because I know how difficult it is to break that cycle of anxiety.
I was a police officer for 28 years and I was diagnosed with chronic anxiety, and I had to leave a job which I had done for most of my adult life. Now leaving this job meant that really I left behind my sense of self worth, my self esteem and my self confidence, my life hit rock bottom and virtually I become a recluse for about a year.
Now I had ex colleagues come to visit me and I suppose they were well meaning I have no doubt about that, but I suppose that’s the first time that I realised that most people don’t understand what life is like when you suffer from anxiety. Because my colleagues would say to me things like “Well you’ve got a lot of time on your hands now, you should be able to relax.”
Relax was something that I didn’t feel I could do. My body wasn’t allowing me to relax, my brain and my body was just on the go all the time. With all the chemicals and all the hormones that were flooding through me was part of my anxiety.
They would say things to me like “Well you live in the country side, it’s a lovely environment. Why don’t you just take the dogs for a walk? You know, take your mind away from things.”
Again what people don’t realise is that when you suffer from anxiety, life can be a prison. I mean I was living in a prison of my own mind and it didn’t matter where I was or what I was doing. I felt as if I was surrounded by barbed wire. So it took a long time for me to be able to get the confidence to actually think about going out and trying to live my life again. 
Now I was on medication and I was receiving some therapy, some counselling. I did start to actually feel that I was able to start managing my life again, and I applied for a job with a local heritage organisation, which is a subject very dear to my heart, and I was offered this job, I took the job but on the first day I had this massive panic attack and I just couldn’t attend and I emailed them. I didn’t have the confidence to pick up the phone and speak to them. I emailed them and they were very understanding, but of course that really sent me back down to rock bottom. Now I had met someone else who was to become my partner and she said to me “Look, things are just not going anywhere. You’re just standing still here where you are.”  She asked me “Will you try something?” and I said “Yeah I’ll try anything”
So she introduced me to this sect of self help hypnosis CD’s, and I have to say, my mindset which was very sceptical was more like “I’ll try anything, but I don’t really want to try this.”
However I was desperate. I was desperate to free myself from this barbed wire mindset that I had. So I started listening to these CD’s and now the real positive thing is of course I was able to listen to these in the safety, security and privacy of my own home. 
So it didn’t matter what I felt like, because I didn’t have to leave home to go to a clinic or someone’s consulting room, I could do this in the privacy of my own home. So if I was having a good day and I didn’t want to listen to them, I didn’t and if I was having a bad day I did listen to them. If I was having a good day and I wanted to listen to them, I listened to them.
But what’s happened is that I started listening to them every day and sometimes more than once a day and to my amazement I found that I started to look at life differently and I started to go from strength to strength, and I started to overcome my anxiety and I started to realise that I could actually be free of this sort of barbed wire mentality.
I applied for another job, now this job is more in line with experiences that I had as a police officer because I actually got a job training police officers in a police training centre and I enjoyed that so much and found that I had gone from strength to strength that I actually got another job, a part time job in a college for further education. I was teaching police officers full time and that was a job I continued to do for another 13 years.
I was teaching police officers full time and I was teaching part time as a tutor in a college for further education and on top of that Claire and I were together by that time and we decided we wanted to become foster carers, so we applied to become foster carers and we started sharing our lives with some fantastic children.
Well that was the dogs barking, I’m very fortunate that I’m able to work from home and which I really appreciate. However, unfortunately you do have interruptions of day to day life going on around you. 
So just to catch up where we were:
 I had overcome my anxiety. 
I had gone from very very dark days, to really starting to enjoy my life to the full.
 I was working full time. I had a part time job as a college tutor.
Claire and I had become foster carers and were now sharing our lives with some gorgeous children and I was starting to enjoy my life.
But when I looked at what had happened to me, my experiences. I decided that I would use that experience to help others. So I trained as a hypnotherapist and really that is why I am here today talking to you, because I had been able to help other people overcome their difficulties and I have now put together this program called “Stop Anxiety” which of course the videos that are coming to the inbox of your email are part of that program.
Now as I said in the end of the first video. The videos will be coming to you on regular intervals into your inbox of your email. However if you do want to get them in a single package, then they come as part of the stop anxiety program.

The Power of Positive Thoughts
Hi,
It’s me again.
In this video I’m going to be speaking to you about “negative self talk.”
There’s an old saying and it goes “talking to yourself is the first sign of insanity” 
Well nothing could be further from the truth. Because every day we talk to ourselves, in our everyday situations we are faced with events where we have to make value judgments and assessments, we assess the events, we assess our ability to deal with them and all this takes place in the conversation in your mind.
Just for instance if you’re given a challenging piece of work to do, you look at it and probably the first thing that goes through your mind is “I can do this”
Possibly for some people the first thing that goes through their mind is “I can’t do this”
But to make that assessment you need to look at what are my abilities? 
What resources have I got to do this?
How much time have I got to do this?
What is needed for me to be able to carry out this task? 
So you’re making all these assessments and judgements, you’re interpreting situations and this is all going on in your head in the form of a conversation. 
Now as human beings most of us are pretty optimistic so we don’t go around saying “oh the end of the world is near we all doomed. We don’t leave our house in the morning thinking that we’re going to get run over by a bus or be involved in a fatal car accident. For most of us our mindset is positive. Now how you view things, what your mindset is influences the way you actually deal with that.
The worst thing that can happen to any of us is to be stuck in the “What if” mindset 
What if I can’t do it? 
What if people realise I was useless?
What if I get anxious?
What if I make myself look like a fool?
What if I have a panic attack?
Applying “what if’s” to every situation makes you perceive it through a negative mindset and all the time it’s increasing your levels of anxiety, and the more your levels on anxiety increase the less capable you feel about doing things. So I’m going to give you a little trick, a little something to remember which will help you turn around those what if’s because I want instead of you to think about them as what if’s I want you to think about them as “So what’s”
So if I said what if I can’t do it? Turn it around to “so what if I can’t do it, at least I tried”
What about “what if people think I’m useless?” Turn it around to “so what if people think I’m useless I can prove them otherwise”
“What if I get anxious?  - “So what if I’m anxious, I’d be a fool if I wasn’t”
“What if people think I’m a fool?”-  “So what, at least I tried”
“What if I have a panic attack?”-  “So what, I’ll deal with that if it occurs”
Now, by turning around your what if’s to so what’s. You have challenged your negative self talk. You have given yourself an opportunity to express yourself n a positive way and to react in a positive way.
Think about this: would you talk to a friend the way you talk to yourself? Because at the end of the day we’re usually harder on ourselves than we are on anybody else so give yourself a break. So what? at least you tried.
Stop that negative self talk. Talk to yourself as you would talk to your best friend. 



Stop fearing the fear.
In this video we’re going to talk about “Panic attacks.” now for people who suffer with anxiety disorder panic attacks can be a frequent occurrence. But even for those people who not normal prone to anxiety, they can have a panic attack when some sort of random event triggers a huge emotional response within them.
Anxiety and panic attacks are all about the fight or flight mechanism. Remember that when we feel under threat our bodies release all of these hormones and chemicals which are designed to keep us safe, because the anxiety in itself makes us couscous and aware of the danger, however when you suffer from anxiety this is a continuous event.
What happens of course is that you’re anxious and your anxiety triggers the fight or flight mechanism and you can end up with a panic attack and from the panic attack you can get frightened and that fear, fear of the event and then when it’s over fear of the future event can trigger even more anxiety and so it goes on and what we have to do is try and break that cycle.
Panic attacks can mimic really serious conditions. When someone is having a panic attack you know they can feel like they’re having a heart attack or a stroke or something very serious is happening to them and they can become terrified and that terror can bring about all sorts of emotional responses. One of the greatest emotional responses you’re going to get is actually you feel as if you can’t breathe, you feel as if you’re suffocating and you’re panting for breath. By even panting for breath, hyperventilating is going to make you even more frightened. 
It can make you feel faint:
You can be sweaty
Heart palpitations
Chest pains
Your fingers can tingle

All of these things can happen and they can happen in a very short space of time and it can be overwhelming. So what we need to do is we need to control those and stop it in its tracks. So if you think you’re going to have a panic attack you feel it coming on or even if it suddenly hit you out of the blue, you need to be able to control that because controlling it menas that you will not fear about the future.
So what I’m going to do is I’m going to give you a very simple but quick technique that you can use anywhere. If you feel that you have a panic attack coming on or even if you suddenly find yourself in the middle of one. It’s called “Gradin” and it comes in three stages:
The first is to ground yourself physically, what you’ve got to do is take yourself back to reality because your imagination is working overtime, you think you’re having a heart attack, you think all sorts of things are happening to you and you need to grab yourself physically and say no actually I’m here and it’s now and it’s okay.
It’s something really simple. Grab onto something, the pure physical act of feeling something solid will help to ground you physically and if that’s a bit too obvious you can do other things, you could jingle your car keys, rag around in your bag, and get out your mobile check your text. You can do all sorts of things but make is physical, make it something when you’ve got physical contact with something because that is what you need, you need to know the way you are is in the here and now and you’re physically okay. 
The most important thing you need to do is control your breathing, now there are all sorts of techniques for breathing control but very simple all you need to do is breath very slowly because when you’re hyperventilating, when you’re panicking and panting you’re not oxygenating your body properly and therefore it makes you dizzy and the dizziness makes you feel even more panicky. All you got to do is control that breathing. Breathe slowly *inhale*... *exhale* it’s simple. Just breathe in slowly, better if you do it through your nose because that controls it better and out slowly. 
If you can control yourself enough that you can sort of count numbers, so count while you’re breathing in count to 3 or 5, hold it for a little while and then breathe out. That will very very rapidly bring your breathing under control. Breathing in slowly and out slowly.
Have you got yourself grounded physically, the next thing you need to do is to control that imagination going into overdrive, so you need to ground yourself mentally so take the focus away from what’s going on inside your head and put yourself back into reality both physically and mentally, and to do it mentally, very simply distract yourself. Distract yourself by doing something as simple as the alphabet or counting number but make it a little bit more difficult so that you actually have to think about what you doing and not what is happening to you. So count down from 99 to 0 in odd numbers 99- 97 -95 -93 so count down in odd numbers so that you have to think about it or say the alphabet backwards, that will make you think.
And lastly you need to reassure yourself because what you’re doing is you’re stopping a fear of a future attack. When you feel calm and when you’ve subsided just say to yourself “its okay, I’m fine” I am stronger than my imagination. I can overcome my fears, and reassure yourself because what you’re doing is stopping yourself fearing fear itself.

Reframing your thoughts. (part5) 

Your glass is half full.

In this video I’m going to be speaking to you about “Reframing your Thoughts.”
Now our lives are a constant process of learning, even as babies in our cots we’re learning to communicate with our mothers. We go to school we learn new skills and of course as adults that learning process just goes on and on and on. Now all of these learning processes are part of our conscious thought. 
Most of what we know, most of what we do is all learned behaviour. Your habits, your behaviour, your responses they’re all part of that conscious learned thought. However what’s going on also in that computer that is your brain is another program and that is the program of unconscious thought, otherwise known as the subconscious. 
 Now in our lives all the events that take place are recorded in our minds, our brain retains all of that information, not only does it retain that information but it also remembers how we felt about it. Therefore when we have negative events or traumatic events that happen in our lives, those events that flood our bodies with hormones and chemicals and bring back that fight or flight mechanism our brain remembers all of that information and when we’re anxious it constantly replays that to us, so all the time we’re feeling anxious because our brain is constantly replaying all of these thought processes.
What we have to do is break that cycle. We need to change the information that’s getting to your brain and reframe it in such a way that when your brain remembers it, it remembers it in a more positive mindset.
Now there is a very very simple technique to do this and I’m going to do this technique with you, but before I do I’d like you to get yourself into a nice comfortable position. So that you can actually think, because what I want you to do is to think of a situation that would be extremely stressful for you and will build your levels of anxiety so this may be getting in a lift or elevator, could be driving your car on the motor way, flying in an aeroplane or even a difficult conversation with your boss.
I want you to really concentrate on this and think about it and I want you to let those anxiety levels build up inside you as you think about that, and then we you think they’ve well reached their maximum I want you to give it a number out of 10. Maybe it’s a 7 or 8, maybe a 9 or 10. 
It makes you feel really anxious and what we’re going to do now is we’re going to concentrate on those thoughts and as you concentrate on those thoughts and think about the anxiety, I’m going to ask you in a few seconds to take a deep breath inwards, breath in through your nose hold it awhile and then breath out through your mouth. And just to what I’m saying while you’re doing this , right so think about the anxiety, think about whatever it is that’s really making you feel anxious and think about that number  “you know, I’m on a 9 here.”
“You know this is really upsetting for me” 
So I want you to now breathe in, think about that anxiety and I want you to breathe out through your mouth and as you breathe out, just allow it to come out. I want you to let all that negativity and all the anxiety come out. Breathe out. 
Let it come out. Let it just float away into the atmosphere. Now we can repeat that a few times. So it’s going to be in think about all the negativity *poof* out it goes. Let out into the atmosphere, let it go. When you breathe in, feel it in your abdomen and then breathe it out. Breathe it out with some force and get rid of that negativity. Just keep on doing that for a while.
Because what I want you to do is every couple of breaths or so I want you to think about that again and I want you to change the number and you will find that number is going down each time. If you’re a 9 maybe it goes down to an 8 or 7 and you keep on doing that, another couple of breaths and that will go down to a 5, maybe a 4. So just keep on doing that for the moment “Inhale” “Exhale” 
That’s right, now when you’ve got that to about a 3, you may even have got it to nothing. I just want you to stop, just allow yourself now just to take some time and feel how calm you’re beginning to feel and we now going to repeat this process but as we’re repeat this process we’re going to do something to anchor that calm feeling in our mind.
As you breathe in now I want you to think the word “Calm” to yourselves and when you do I want you to do something, I want you just to touch your thumb and either your forefinger or your index finger together, just touch it like that and make a little circle.
Breathe in... think calm... and breathe out and as you breathe out you just feel that calmness washing over you, and breathe in.... and out... just feel that calmness washing over you. Just keep on doing that for a short while, in and out, and you will associate that feeling with that action. So whenever you feel stressed or anxious all you need to do is to hold your fingers together like this *make a circle* and think the word “calm”
Now what’s happening there is that when stressful things happen for you, you can change the message that’s going through to your brain by using that anchor of calmness and the message that will come through to your brain is not stressful. Fight or flight thoughts, but it’s going to be calm messages, calm thoughts and you can relax yourself, and calm yourself down in any situation.
Practice that a few times. It worked for me. It’s worked for many thousands of people and I know it will work for you.

The causes of anxiety. (part4)

Stop your cycle of anxiety.
Anxiety comes in many shapes and forms. But by far the most prevalent is that which is referred to as generalised anxiety disorder. Now it also has a simpler and far more descriptive title and that is “Chronic Worrying” very apt.
If you live your life on a day to day basis suffering from severe anxiety, then on the outside you’re going to be feeling pretty isolated. However the truth is that the facts speak differently because up to one in ten people will suffer from a chronic anxiety condition at some stage in their lives, and also in the UK alone up to 2.5 million people can be suffering from an anxiety related condition at any one time. 
So with these sorts of figures, what is it that’s making us so anxious?  Well the causes are many and varied. But they can be broken down into a few basic roots. Now first of all this could be an inherited disposition for you, it could be genetic. You could have inherited being an anxiety prone from your parents and of course that does set you off at a disadvantage. But also in childhood the events that happen to us, some of them major events for instance loss of a parent or even separation from parents and other significant events and sometimes not so significant events will occur to us and will have a major impact on us for the rest of our lives. 
Even though frequently we will have forgotten about them altogether or we think we’ve forgotten about them, and then of course as adults the stresses and strains of our lives just go on and on and on. Now we worry about our work, we worry about our relationships, we worry about our finances and we live in a crowded environment. Our lives are busy and on a day to day basis we have no time for “me time” we can never give ourselves permission to actually come down so we live all the time with this sort of high level anxiety.
Now as a former anxiety sufferer I know how difficult it is to cope with these things on a day to day basis and we end up in a rather vicious cycle and one of the down sides of that is that sometimes as a result of our anxiety we make very poor lifestyle choices. 
Say for instance: we may eat too much, we may drink too much, we may smoke too much and of course in the long term certainly this affects our health and it can affect our mental welfare. 
Now, there is a part of the brain known as the “medulla” and that is responsible for our emotions, so: pleasure, anger, fear.
All of those emotions are created in the medulla. But it also has another wrong in our life and that is it retains information, it remembers things. Not only does it remember things that happened to us, events in our life but it also remembers how we felt about it. What our emotions were like and it relates these things, so when further events happen in our lives it remembers all this information and it feeds down our sort of responses to those events and it gives the emotions that we should be feeling, and when you’re suffering from anxiety those emotions are frequently negative.
How does this actually work then? How does the brain make these sorts of relationships? And how is it feeding this negative information? 
If I can give you an example, an everyday example of how we relate sort of ideas and thoughts and things that happen to us:
It’s around mid day, I’m upstairs and all of a sudden from downstairs I can hear the cluttering of pots and pans. Now my brain gives thoughts pots and pans it must be coming up for lunch time. That creates some very nice feelings inside and I start anticipating lunch in a very pleasurable experience for me that is going to be. My gastric juices start to work and it’s all a very positive experience.
However for some of us it may not be that way. We may interpret those sounds in a totally different way and they could then trigger the fight or flight mechanism in our minds. Those mechanisms that feed the chemicals and hormones into our body which can actually be harmful to us, the adrenalin, the noradrenalin, and the cortical that makes us extremely anxious and we’re feeling this constantly. What we need to do is break that cycle.
We can break that cycle by changing that information that’s going into our minds. Now of course some of you may very well know the causes for your anxiety or at least with help you may be able to reveal the underlying cause of your anxiety. For instance I had a friend who was absolutely terrified of telephones and would not make a telephone call and even the sound of a phone ringing almost gave her a panic attack.  But with help she actually realised that this actually did relate to something and it turned out that as a child she had actually witnessed her mother answering the phone when the phone call was actually to tell her mother about her father’s death overseas.
 She had actually forgotten the specifics of that event but the emotions stayed with her for the rest of her life and therefore when the telephone rang, or she saw a telephone or had to deal with a telephone, all of that exploded again. Now obviously she could be helped to overcome those anxieties. But for many of us where we’re suffering from generalised anxiety disorder we can’t always recognise what the causes are and sometimes it can be more than one cause.
So we have to learn to reinterpret events or to help our brains reinterpret events so that way we are not feeding that negative information to our brains constantly, hour after hour, day after day, and I’m going to be talking about this, this very subject in my later videos how we can refrain our thoughts, how we can stop ourselves, talking to ourselves negatively and putting all this negative information into our minds.

The Monster Behind Anxiety. (Part 3)

Fight or Flight Response

This is the latest in the series of short videos I’ve made all around anxiety and panic attacks. As an ex-anxiety sufferer I know how difficult it is to break that cycle of anxiety.
This series of videos I’m sure will be beneficial to others who are suffering from the same sort of challenges and difficulties that I myself have faced in the past. I think however it’s very important to realise right at the start that you need to accept the anxiety does not make you different to any other person. It’s not abnormal. There are around seven billion people in the world so at any one time a good proportion of that seven billion people are going to be anxious. 
Because anxiety is natural to us, it keeps us safe. Even babies learn anxiety. You know there are only two fears we are born with and that’s: the fear of falling and the fear of loud noises.
Everything else is learned behaviour. Now that learned behaviour is all sort of evolved with something called “The fight or flight mechanism” now the fight or flight mechanism goes way back to thousands if not millions of years to our early ancestors.
Early caveman looked out of the cave and “uh oh there’s a sabre tooth tiger” immediately caveman’s body is flooded by loads of chemicals and hormones, these are all activated by part of the brain called hypothalamus and our bodies are flooded with all the chemicals adrenalin, noradrenalin, and cortisol and it pounces up and it gets us ready to fight the sabre tooth tiger or to run away, probably in the case of the sabre tooth tiger, we’re going to run away.
Now, in today’s society we don’t face sabre toothed tigers or do we? Because our sabre toothed tiger comes in all sorts of different shapes and forms. You know our anxiety is all very often about stresses and strains of everyday life. We worry about our jobs, if we’re lucky enough to have one. 
We worry about pan more which are our rent, we worry about our relationships, and we’re slaves to our mobile phones and our social networking sites. We live in a crowded, busy environment which is extremely stressful and then on top of that of course we’ve got our own personal major disasters: death, divorce, redundancy and all of this builds up our anxiety levels and it all activates our fight or fly mechanism and it means as an anxiety sufferer you’re never getting a chance to come down from that high level of chemical and hormones which is constantly flooding your body.
Of course we recognise those symptoms don’t we? 
We get anxious. 
It can make us go dizzy, 
Our mouths can go dry.
Our blood pressure goes up, and your heart beats faster.
We get strung for breath and maybe it makes our hands and feet tingle.
Our muscles cramp up.
Our stomach cramps up.
 All of these symptoms we can be constantly suffering from because our anxiety levels do not come down, and the fact is that we can learn to manage it, just the same as we can learn anxiety as a learned behaviour, we can un-learn that behaviour. 
In my future videos my subjects are going to be around un-learning these behaviours and how we deal with the symptoms of our anxiety.

My anxiety story (part 2)

“I Overcame My Anxiety, Now Let Me Help You”

This is the second in the series of short videos that I’ve made on anxiety and panic attacks and of course they come to you free of charge. 

Now I thought I’d give you a brief overview of my own experiences so that you know I do understand how you feel, because I know how difficult it is to break that cycle of anxiety.
I was a police officer for 28 years and I was diagnosed with chronic anxiety, and I had to leave a job which I had done for most of my adult life. Now leaving this job meant that really I left behind my sense of self worth, my self esteem and my self confidence, my life hit rock bottom and virtually I become a recluse for about a year.
Now I had ex colleagues come to visit me and I suppose they were well meaning I have no doubt about that, but I suppose that’s the first time that I realised that most people don’t understand what life is like when you suffer from anxiety. Because my colleagues would say to me things like “Well you’ve got a lot of time on your hands now, you should be able to relax.”
Relax was something that I didn’t feel I could do. My body wasn’t allowing me to relax, my brain and my body was just on the go all the time. With all the chemicals and all the hormones that were flooding through me was part of my anxiety.
They would say things to me like “Well you live in the country side, it’s a lovely environment. Why don’t you just take the dogs for a walk? You know, take your mind away from things.”
Again what people don’t realise is that when you suffer from anxiety, life can be a prison. I mean I was living in a prison of my own mind and it didn’t matter where I was or what I was doing. I felt as if I was surrounded by barbed wire. So it took a long time for me to be able to get the confidence to actually think about going out and trying to live my life again. 
Now I was on medication and I was receiving some therapy, some counselling. I did start to actually feel that I was able to start managing my life again, and I applied for a job with a local heritage organisation, which is a subject very dear to my heart, and I was offered this job, I took the job but on the first day I had this massive panic attack and I just couldn’t attend and I emailed them. I didn’t have the confidence to pick up the phone and speak to them. I emailed them and they were very understanding, but of course that really sent me back down to rock bottom. Now I had met someone else who was to become my partner and she said to me “Look, things are just not going anywhere. You’re just standing still here where you are.”  She asked me “Will you try something?” and I said “Yeah I’ll try anything”
So she introduced me to this sect of self help hypnosis CD’s, and I have to say, my mindset which was very sceptical was more like “I’ll try anything, but I don’t really want to try this.”
However I was desperate. I was desperate to free myself from this barbed wire mindset that I had. So I started listening to these CD’s and now the real positive thing is of course I was able to listen to these in the safety, security and privacy of my own home. 
So it didn’t matter what I felt like, because I didn’t have to leave home to go to a clinic or someone’s consulting room, I could do this in the privacy of my own home. So if I was having a good day and I didn’t want to listen to them, I didn’t and if I was having a bad day I did listen to them. If I was having a good day and I wanted to listen to them, I listened to them.
But what’s happened is that I started listening to them every day and sometimes more than once a day and to my amazement I found that I started to look at life differently and I started to go from strength to strength, and I started to overcome my anxiety and I started to realise that I could actually be free of this sort of barbed wire mentality.
I applied for another job, now this job is more in line with experiences that I had as a police officer because I actually got a job training police officers in a police training centre and I enjoyed that so much and found that I had gone from strength to strength that I actually got another job, a part time job in a college for further education. I was teaching police officers full time and that was a job I continued to do for another 13 years.
I was teaching police officers full time and I was teaching part time as a tutor in a college for further education and on top of that Claire and I were together by that time and we decided we wanted to become foster carers, so we applied to become foster carers and we started sharing our lives with some fantastic children.
Well that was the dogs barking, I’m very fortunate that I’m able to work from home and which I really appreciate. However, unfortunately you do have interruptions of day to day life going on around you. 
So just to catch up where we were:
 I had overcome my anxiety. 
I had gone from very very dark days, to really starting to enjoy my life to the full.
 I was working full time. I had a part time job as a college tutor.
Claire and I had become foster carers and were now sharing our lives with some gorgeous children and I was starting to enjoy my life.
But when I looked at what had happened to me, my experiences. I decided that I would use that experience to help others. So I trained as a hypnotherapist and really that is why I am here today talking to you, because I had been able to help other people overcome their difficulties and I have now put together this program called “Stop Anxiety” which of course the videos that are coming to the inbox of your email are part of that program.
Now as I said in the end of the first video. The videos will be coming to you on regular intervals into your inbox of your email. However if you do want to get them in a single package, then they come as part of the stop anxiety program.
