Since I usually have some sort of music playing when I go to sleep(much of it from the Junto), I made this a little longer and more peaceful than my usual bits. Starting with Waldorf Nave I made a slowly evolving pad for the body of the piece. Then I added a nice female speaking track with a hp filter and a bit of verb to give a sense of muted distance. It still needed a little more body so I got a simple patch in Animoog for some quiet bass. The final track is a field recording of high plains wind that is mixed low with some widened sound field. Only added a little presence to the master channel in Cubasis.  As always, used Ocenaudio for wav slicing and conversion. Thanks! @disquiet

What you get when you mix disappointment, the new  Cubasis Room Works, Kiev, Chicago, short wave radio, voice tests and loads of effects? This weeks piece. Started with a nice Chicago bass line in Gadget, added a sparse but heavy beat and loaded up all sorts of field recordings. Disembodied voices, shortwave, static, and old 78 record noises where loaded into multiple instances of Abu Dhabi sampler and applied as needed. I was looking for more of a personal broken with the sound, not the broken sound itself…huh!? That made sense! Anyways, only iOS toys were injured here, Gadget, Cubasis, Audioshare, F-16, and Algoridims dj2.

Music-When this prompt was emailed I had an idea for revisiting a track started before using some acoustic instruments I have about. Started out actually trying to find where they went to! Once found, the broken Hero toy accordion wouldn't play nicely with the others :-/  So backup plan B, revisit an older recording that needed major board work. That proved time consuming as well and the results are still in question. Then for a mental break I recorded some ceramic bowl sounds in response to William Boldenweck's talk of broken bell jars and another member (whos name I unfortunately can't remember) mention of kintsukuroi, a Japanese technique of ceramic repair. The bowls where amazingly musical and so I created a clock chime sound signifying 10:00 and things went crazy! The first section is as recorded, the next 2x speed, the next 4x speed and the last 1/2 speed. They each play in succession and then collide for the last section, meanwhile a mixdown of that is introduced through the Dedalus delay/sampler/mangler in a separate track. The third track is a simple Micrologue bass line for mass ;-) Recorded through a Zoom H2 into AudioShare and sent to Cubasis for mixing and mangling. While not where I started, I did revisit something broken!

A vague shadow of a tribute this week, time has dictated a quicker and less involved homage to Mr. Riley’s work. A more manageable 11 phrases for 6 instruments and lasting a mere 2:20 minutes. I did maintain other aspects, including phrasing and the “beautiful girl” “Pulse” for some rhythm. I also managed to keep it entirely water based samples. The first of which is a holdover from last weeks session, the drop in a bucket. This acts as the pulse and has been eq’d with a mild verb. Another instance layers and shadows, and is has a large assortment of effects: Eq, Kosmonaut, RoomWorks verb and DLYM chorus/flanger. I tried to effect a different frequency and phrase while keeping a similar sound. Various samples from a recorded sink faucet are spread across two tracks, one with Mani Lofionic Analogue Chorus and RoomWorks and the other with Eos2 and automated panning. The longest phrase, which is somewhat choral like, is a stretched recording of the Atlantic, with both eq and RoomWorks again. The final phrase is a heavy rain with heavy manipulation. It’s a looped sample that undulates and is frequency enhanced around 110Hz, has a comb stereo spread, a bit of RoomWorks verb and a perfect amount of Nebulizer sound mangler, mangled but still recognizable. I hoped for this shortened session to sound of a deep, dark and disquieting(pun if you got one!) place that blurs the line between a sentient being and a cold unforgiving grave…

With an excellent prompt on one of my favorite parts of music making, you’d think piece of cake. Well maybe that’s the problem, I love kits, drums, rhythms, pads and most anything percussive in nature. It was my first instrument and still plays a large role in most of what I do. So it’s possible a little too much enthusiasm and importance was put into this kit. I had thought of using one of the many already in my arsenal, but thought that wasn’t in the spirit of this weeks Junto. Opening my recorded samples folder started the process.
The Torment Kit:
Kick -
1st layer -  Dead blow hammer on tire w/compressor, eq and fuzz
2nd layer - cardboard box hit w/eq
3rd layer - unlabeled field recording on some machine w/eq
Snare - 
1st layer - metal bucket hit w/enhancer and eq
2nd layer - plastic jug hit w/eq
HiHat closed - 
1st layer - container full of metal parts hit
2nd layer - drumstick hit on sheetmetal
HiHat open - 
1st layer - dropped lid w/eq
2nd layer - metal box cover w/eq
Clap - breaking stuff w/eq
Crash - 
1st layer - kitchen utensils w/enhancer and eq
2nd layer - broken heating coil hit w/eq
Weird hit - unknown field recording w/chorus
Tom - finished kick transposed w/eq
Each kit sound was made in Cubasis, mixed down and sent to Audioshare, trimmed and normalized for use in any sampler or DAW kit.
The entire kit was given a small drum room overhead mic reverb and levels were mostly equaled out with all panned center where recordings allowed.
The Song:
Of course the obvious choice was going to be very beat driven, so the above sounds were brought into Patterning 2 for a custom kit perfect for live manipulation! A 4/4 135 bpm file was created and live pad view opened. It started innocently enough, but went out of control into a 10:00 jam with ratcheting counts and delays and tunings and swing all being messed with. It got ugly and noisy. Perfect, but too long and dull for normal consumption, so the best bits were sent to play with a raucous Sunrizer patch. And crickets. And a badly done building chorus. All with overdriven amp patches and distortion and noise. You get the drift. It was late, the beat sounded good and it all went wrong ;-) If anybody is using Patterning and interested, I can try uploading?

Perfect prompt for me this week, in and out of error, in and out of repeating moments, and all around disorientation :-/
Started with a patch in Animoog/Monster Moog that was fittingly evolving and then opened that in Sector, the perfect app for glitchiness, where it was divided into 16 sections, warped, slowed and mangled in varying degrees. 
This was recorded and sent to Cubasis where it was chopped some more and added alongside a glitch beat made in Patterning, which ultimately got dropped. No beats needed here, plenty of rhythm on its own!
Following my recent direction of chaos resolving to order, a patch in Thor with the perfect blend of glitch was chosen for voice. The added bonus being the modulation wheel changed it from harsh noise to almost angelic choir. You hear this effect beginning 28 seconds in, that rocket lift off sound is at full mod and is slowly pulled down for the rest of the piece. The glitch effect is also being reduced while I played the remainder. 
The mix down was set into two tracks with mixed panning, and the intro was further chopped into pieces and set alternately between them for a nice stereo feel.
Most of the effects were in the synths themselves, but in this final mix both had ascending sends to ADverb for a bit of atmospheric finishing. First try had a Waves L1+Ultramaximizer in the final mix bus, and while it added a cool compressed gritty edge, in the end I chose the greater transients and more dynamic sound without…seemed more fitting to the end.
The title is loosely translated from Swedish meaning “After Error”. I thought this fit better than the original “Nach Glitschen” I had chosen, while it may be the possible origin of glitch, the slide/slither origin seemed at odds with how this sounded ;-)

 I had two choices for this weeks prompt, VCV Rack and Sugarbytes Aparillo. Time was going to be short and mobile so Aparillo won by default. This app is quite appropriately named and the title of this weeks piece plays on that. I haven’t made many of my own patches yet and so I started monkeying with presets and came up with some interesting bits. This has so many perimeter adjustments, automations and options I’ll be busy for ages. And that’s without touching the orbit panel.
 Three instances of Aparillo were loaded in Aum along with Rozeta Cells. I tried to use more, but the old pad was starting to crackle and hum. I played a pattern into Cells which routed midi into two instances of Aparillo, the lead sequence and the bass sequence. The third are what I labeled as accents, a crazy sounding percussive whale song transformation. The third part was played live while adjusting faders and tweaking the first two synths perimeters. That sounds way more impressive than it is.
 I was trying for a melancholy hoping Spring returns soon feeling. This weather is making me crazy. Crazier, anyways. Cheers :-)

This week began with an idea for a syncopated rhythm in 3/4 time. Each part was a variation of three beats spread across fifteen sections in Patterning. These were routed to AUM and into two sends, one dry, another through EOS 2. The patterns were originally intended for a more percussive sound, but serendipitously ended up sounding nice on a modified version of the RAV Vast Pan kit, making for an unusually serene mix. Now for the numbers:
In 3.14 tracks there are 3 hits of varying note values on fourteen segments with the initial reverb perimeters in AdVerb2 set at 3.14ms pre-delay, 3.14 seconds in reverb time and 31.4 meters in size. Missed the 3:14 length by a smidge, but apparently my internal timekeeping was a bit off on the live mixing in Patterning. The beginning and ending are are where I used the infinity button on the reverb. So that part correlates with our prompt as well. The title, because its all greek to me…Pi in the Ski. Set in lowercase cause it looks cool and with an “i” in sky cause no “y” in Greek!? The art is...wait for it...a peach pan(drum)pi.  =-D

Not many bluetooth devices in my life, so the choice was easy. Set up the bluetooth soundbar in front of a mic and start playing a synth on the iPad while moving further away from said soundbar. Oh wait, instruments don’t play through bluetooth. Okay plan B. Dig through the Audioshare folder for samples, music, noodling and various field recordings. Now find the distance sweet spot for connectivity (other end of the house), and start dancing, walking, blocking and driving everyone insane with noise. Take one eight minute recording into Cubasis, find the interesting bits and make them more unbearable with effects. A little eq on the 1st track, Shimmerfx verb on the 2nd, mild case of Replicant2 on the 3rd, stereo width on the 4th and some undulating send to a Leslie cabinet. A really quick and dirty submission. No, really really dirty. Like if you suffered from a form of audio epilepsy and listened to this, your lawyers would get you everything I own. And my family.

Like some kind of musical compulsive disorder, a suggestion that it could make a good sampler pad resulted in this remix. An almost enjoyable remake of Delapibeta. Slowed by half, chopped, diced and turned from a piece that goes nowhere, it emerges as a dirge drifting even more slowly towards limbo. Maybe its now gone for good. One can only hope.

It Lives

   Fighting City Hall has devoured my involvement, time and patience of late. So after missing last weeks prompt, a short reprieve gave me a chance to try some new experiments.
   A simple melody was created in Cubasis with Aparillo, Micrologue and Kauldron. The Micrologue bass line uses the ShimmerFX harmonic exciter but the remaining Micrologue and Aparillo tracks use only a bit of eq. The last track is a ghostly pad in Kauldron where I wanted to try live automation with the Bleass Reverb transform pad. Unfortunately, I couldn’t seem to make that write in the automation lane. Not sure if it normally works or if I’m just doing something wrong, but I would greatly appreciate any feedback from my fellow iOS musicians using Bleass in Cubasis. The new approach found me mixing down the melody and ghost pad into separate tracks and bringing them into AUM. In AUM, each were loaded into individual file player channels and the Bleass Reverb plugin was added to the ghostly Kauldron. Then with both armed to record, the morphing pad was opened and played. This new effected Kauldron track was imported back into Cubasis for the final mix. A boring description for readers, a little convoluted but an effective work around with good results I thought.

What a great prompt for the Junto this week. Thanks to Scanner (aka Robin Rimbaud) and Marc for making it happen.
Tried to do the right thing and downloaded NI Access, Reaktor 6 and Blocks base, having never used any of their plugins before. Took a while since I needed to do a backup on the laptop. But better safe than sorry :wink:
After loading up Blocks in Reaktor, well to be honest, I wasn’t too impressed. The interface looks blurry and pixelated on my screen and I was informed it wouldn’t be compatible with future OS upgrades. But it’s free so I gave it a go. I am definitely not a modular expert and I found the connectivity and modules a little hard to use, particularly the cable management. Every time I tried to swap cables they would disappear or replace existing connections. I will admit it has been a very long day, hell, make that last couple of weeks, so it’s probably just me. Native’s intentions are good and I’ll try them out more in the future.
Thank God rxbx came to the rescue with the shared system VCV rack!!!
I was trying to find a substitute for the 4mods and wasn’t sure what to use, but thankfully somebody with infinitely more knowledge came to the rescue. I am reasonably adept with VCV, have even made an EP entirely with it https://soundcloud.com/hypoidsound/sets/uncertain-variations , but I had never tried anything this minimal before.
Cable management lost its difficulty and I was able to concentrate on the sounds. I did add two modules to the mix, but both are free. Plateau was a must to help add some space and the stereo record is the easiest way I’ve found to capture the mix. I couldn’t have been luckier, a great swelling oscillator sound grew with each new cable. Once the movement was created with patching, I began tweaking knobs while recording, adding more pulse width, fm and drive. A few more cables from SEQ-3 added quick bites of saw, pulse width and high freq diffusion on Plateau. I am pretty damned pleased :smiley:

   This weeks piece is a combination of fourteen separate elements.
The first two were played live in iVCS3 for close to 30 minutes. For those not familiar, this is an iOS recreation of the “Putney”, a cable less semi-modular synth developed by Peter Zinovieff and EMS. If a record had synth sounds in the 70’s, it likely used this at least once. 
   This session is the center point of my piece. The cycling oscillators and filters are so much fun to manipulate here, with really fine range and tuning. It also has an excellent independent noise generator, exactly what’s needed for space! The next two elements came from the Micrologue, one an almost perfect slow sine cycling 1 cent out of tune, and the other for some busy electrical sounds.
   The remaining ten elements are combinations of my various field recordings. A freezer, electrical hum, 20 hp variable vane pitch fan, fluorescent light, etc. One of the few advantages to working in a mechanical environment, the source material is abundant, albeit potentially deafening.
   My thought was a large long term transport vessel. The trips last a year traveling their circular route. Depending on your destination, you could be there for a month or more. They’re called apartments to keep the marketing department happy. While they are self contained, the smaller levels closer to the engine do share some facilities, bathrooms, kitchens, laundry etc..  You can pay for everything and relax or work off some money during the route. All depends on your means. My piece is like most things, somewhere in the middle grey area, you still get some ship and traffic noise but have everything in your own apartment. It’s not the nicer, more expensive noiseless section but livable for a few months and just enough to finish this detail.
