With a career spanning over 20 years, DJ Mitsu the Beats has earned a notorious reputation amongst the underground Hip-Hip community as a masterful turntablist and serial beatmaker, widely hailed as the Japanese incarnation of Pete Rock, DJ Premier and J Dilla! With such high accolades amongst his peers, its no surprise that Mitsu is well versed in the sample game, and his his solo productions and work alongside the Japanese Hip-Hop collective GAGLE are all examples of a superhuman ability to select and mix rare, soulful grooves with absolute precision. More recently, Mitsu delivered a Boiler Room set unlike no other where he dropped a wonderfully eclectic collection of records, moving from warped, downtempo Beats to upbeat House james with effortless style.

Released last Friday (19th December), his latest collection of Beat Installments is further evidence of this, paying homage to the Fender Rhodes Piano which has served an essential role in the progression of Jazz, Soul and Hip-Hop over the last half a century. On Beat Installments Vol. 3, he delivers a collection of warm, summery melodies and finely crafted beats underpinned by that airy, effortless style only achieved by a man on the top of his game.

On Hyp 252, Mitsu digs deep into his record collection and offers up a killer 1hr live recording of his characteristically smooth turntable work. Its pretty amazing how easily he seems to transition from genre to genre and this mix is a great example of that. Check out the swift transfer at 13:50 which bounces from offbeat Jazz to in the pocket Funk in a matter of seconds. Mad skills.

Founded by Copenhagen DJ, Mama Snake and LA-based visual artist, Rose Marie Johansen, Amniote Editions is a multi-disciplinary platform yielding wild and wonderful creations. As they ready their next edition, 'DCX-004', they back Australian producer Tred to work his genius under the name, Moloch Horridus.

Under Moloch Horridus, Tred provides a spread of all-powerful pulsers across his four-track capsule, from freaky bops and warm euphoria through to introspective moments. 

At it's core, 'Worlds Apart' feels like edgy, heads down electro skanked up with murky sub-bass that gleams with dubstep nuance, a joyful pairing; but it's not in Tred's nature to stop here. The beauty of this track lies in the angelic high ranges with trance and happy hardcore inspired synths injecting a pure lift of emotion. 'Worlds Apart' is a Tred-signature emotional coaster ride.

A collection of unbending hard dance drivers, the raw essence of MarcelDune's production methods come through in differing forms track by track. Heavy with field recordings and modular synth work, the package is playful and sassy, brimming with defiant vocal samples and rhythmic U-turns. 

'It's Okay To Have No Fun' is an out-and-out trance banger, pairing ravey synths and angelic high ranges with a rumbling low-end and snappy snares.

It was back in 2017 that Blue Hour came together with AJ-X under the Tracing Xircles cloak. Delivering their wonderful 'Gaia's Requiem' EP, this work was yet another contribution to the epitomous flow of music coming out of the BLUE HOUR camp. 

As part of a new collaboration with Oslo trance collective UTE, Mikkel Rev paints a hefty new picture with the Tracing Xircles original. 

Under Mikkel, what was once an introspective, feather-light arrangement of airy arps now becomes a pacey dose of pure elation. An all-encompassing trance bop, the caressing melodies of the original are driven by light but intentional kicks and bound by raw, electrifying acid throbs.

Sound Synthesis, the alias of Maltese producer Keith Farrugia had relatively sparse releases in the beginning. Recent years have seen a burst of new material housed on quality labels such as Distant Worlds and Fundamental Records. 

His next EP 'Analog Soul' comes via eudemonia. Placing high-tier and versatile electronics together with visual art, the label has seen a similar trajectory to that of Farrugia. Since starting out in 2017 they have welcomed Kosh (a.k.a. OCB), PRZ, Two Smooth Christ and Low Tape to their roster (naming only a few) with each release only building on the last.

Title track 'Analog Soul' is exactly as the name may imply; an analog dive into your soul. It's a shining illustration of how dreamy and emotive electro works, engineered by Farrugia's attuned command over his machines. Pulling back the layers, you find light acid prods in the mid-range, paired with angelic harps in the highs. Swept up in a classic electro sway, the main melody of 'Analog Soul' gives this track unflappable buoyancy. Ready for you to drift away in it's undeniable embrace.

The label Parasol Culture, ran by Thoma Bulwer, has gone a long way to provide a comfortable home for the productions of himself and his friends. His mastering studio is credited as a particular hub for these producers to hone their crafts. 

Centered around purely analogue methods, the label unveils a new compilation series entitled 'Wick Voyagers' providing a cross-section of the talent that thrives in this North London borough. Outwardly repping the sound of Hackney Wick. 

Together as Escape Two, ones to watch Anna Wall and Alec Falconer add a characteristically cool house number to the 14-strong comp. Aptly named 'Sunday Street', the pair have penned the perfect Sunday roll-through shuffler poised to see out a hefty weekend schedule.

A multimedia artist, DJ and producer, 'nohup' isn't short of projects or aliases. Moving under numerous musical disguises (‘sighup’, DJ Kaaba Emoji, Mystery Contusion), they also head up a neat selection of side hustles inclusive of an apparel brand and a techy Twitter bot. 

Earlier this year, they launched the label Illegal Afters Tracks. The project had a flying start, raising over $1100 from their first record; split between Real Rent Duwamish and Loveland Therapy Fund. 

On their Hyp mix debut, 'nohup' meditates on the meaning of freedom. Without giving too much away, this mix is a representation of how freedom can develop true artistry with wide-ranging and thought-provoking outcomes. Tune in, it's 'nohup' on the Hyp Mix.

Tracing Xircles is the collaborative project of Luke Standing and Simon Pilkington. Each producers in their own right, Luke as Blue Hour and Simon as AJ-X, their debut on Luke’s Blue Hour label, ‘Gaia’s Requiem’ EP, formed a silky collection of ambient techno. 

Now, they’re back with a new spread. Naturally welcomed once again to the Blue Hour label. Titled ‘Air Lock’ EP, this second body of work forms a marked development from their last. The four tracks inside come packed with the immediacy of the dancefloor.

‘Transmission’ is the fastest of the four. Centering a clear adoration for trance, the signature Tracing Xircles’ freshness remains in airy textures and an outward sense of space. Whilst we can only dream of how a dancefloor can feel, ‘Transmission’ takes us there effortlessly in an illustrious six-minute swoop.

It was in Mexico City where Korean producer, SHUBOSTAR progressed in her craft and broke through into the electronic scene. Moving to Mexico following a job lead, she chose to stay in the capital, instantly falling in love with the people and culture. 

Now stuck back in Korea due to the ongoing pandemic, she's been filling her time by starting her own downtempo party in Seoul, named DAUM TEMPO. She can also be found fishing for vinyl to play at listening sessions, in bars that are still allowed to open.

With influence from artists like Todd Terje, Lindstrøm and Tom Tom Disco, SHUBOSTAR's music is best described as a personal spin on Italo and Nordic disco, a style that she refers to as 'cosmic disco'. Read more on the mix and our interview with her below...

Hyp 433: SHUBOSTAR

Kindimmer is clearly very technical in his approach. His tracks are so intricately woven together. Extending far beyond just electronic components, the music within his 'Planned Obsolescence' EP has a neat way of digging inside you. Drawing out emotions you didn't see lingering. 

Somehow quite minimal in elements, 'Poignant' caresses the brain with bubbling, muted percussion and gleaming, yogic melody. Expertly crafted, this new one from Kindimmer is suggestive of the unique charm we see in the likes of Four Tet. 

A hefty claim, we know, but at a time when finding higher states seems impossible, it's truly refreshing how this track provides a much needed injection of clarity and head space.

London label, Control Freak have made quite the impact since their first release last year. Welcoming Keplrr alongside debuts from Guava and label-head Customer Service so far, they pride themselves on a love for intricate sounds on wax. Seeding techno sensibilities with UK bass twists.

With yet another label debut on the way, this time we see Syz landing with solo EP 'Bunzunkunzun'. A trio of complex dancefloor rippers, it's an all-rounder with shades of brightness pitted alongside thick skanked up textures. 

The title track is the bounciest of the three. Showcasing Syz's clear aptitude for freaki rhythms, it's destined for show-stopping dancefloor moments. Heads down, hips twist, jaws swings. We can't wait to hear this fired up on a system to the masses.

This week we welcome Yazzus for an hour-long mix full of her own productions. It's very telling of her energy. The Ghana-born, London-based producer has expressed on previous occasions how important the rave scene is for her, and how she wants to transmit a feeling of transcendence in her own sets. Her mix fully embodies this. 

Staying high-tempo 140pbm to 160bpm and beyond, Yazzus shows her thirst to get back to the dancefloor. A varied blend of genres are found within, mixed with her signature and infectious joy. Further demonstrating how this artist's music can provide the means for a real spiritual experience, given a club setting and a great sound system.

Formed in 2013 by Kepler, DJ Uta and Sarah Farina, joined later by LUZ1E, Rec Room started out as a party and collective. Focusing on the spectrum of bass music, together Rec Room have sought to break boundaries within this space of club music and its surrouding culture. 

They're now taking things one step further with their brand new label of the same name. Their first release? A various artists compilition 'Roots, Space, Vision Vol.1' featuring San Francisco-based, Xyla.

A perfect match for the Rec Room collective, Xyla's music taps into the deep, inexplicable emotions unearthed on the dancefloor. Aerated textures waltz in the dynamics of space in her tracks. 'Usage' is a perfect example of this. Ingenious melodies swirl and swell around intricate elements that tickle our joints to move.

Producing together for over five years, they now debut on The Bricks with their 'JV Sports' EP. 

Born out of dizzy late nights back in 2015, Inner Zone's hardware based sounds dig up a broad specturm of reference points. From thick acid and juicy breaks, the essence of 90's rave is present across the EP's four tracks. 

Fellow Londoner Alec Falconer has shown himself as a certain production wizard as of late. On the flip, he reworks Inner Zones' 'The Last Arpy' feeling out his innate ear for smart rhythmic switch ups.
