5 Years of Love On The Rocks

Paramida made her name as an integral part of the new Berlin school of DJs embracing a more expansive sound, a charismatic and eclectic idealism beyond the steady, straight-forward pulse of house and techno. Following five years at the city’s diverse OYE Records store, and alongside an international schedule of DJing, she has spent the previous five crafting her Love On The Rocks label in that same generous spirit.

Now, with half a decade passed, she has called upon many of the label’s previous associates, alongside some new faces, to curate a four-disc compilation produced upon the adventurous and personal principles upon which the label was founded. The title of the collection is ‘Supergau’, which Paramida explains to mean "A disaster beyond all expectations". It’s a typically pithy title for a label that’s found a unique groove between dancefloor fulfillment and surprising turns, keeping it’s dedicated buyers and open-minded DJs on their toes, just as Paramida likes it. Still, it hasn’t always been easy.

“Those 5 years didn't fly by,'' admits Paramida. “I had moments of doubts and thoughts about stopping the label. But something inside didn't let it happen. So whatever I'm doing with the label is something that is so deeply rooted in me that I'm not ready to stop yet. This compilation represents five years of ups and downs, tears and joy, growing, losing and finding itself again. I've never really questioned or reflected it much. The label has been pretty much a mirror of my personal life, my taste at a certain point and the artist or person that was involved in my life at that particular stage of my life. As such, I want to give this first chapter of Love On The Rocks a nice closure.”

Some artists on the compilation return to the fold, such including Fantastic Man, Massimiliano Pagliara, Violet, ELLES, Etbonz, Dirk Leyers and Alex Kassian. Others are featured for the first time such as Francis Inferno Orchestra, Bartellow and Eric Duncan. And others again are a complete surprise, including Kornél Kovács, Daniela La Luz and Hermann Kristoffersen. ‘5 Years of Love On The Rocks’ presents an opportunity for artists to explore the charismatic boundaries between house, disco, new wave and acid, with the shared goal of sheer dancefloor bliss.

“Every record I put out felt like a message I'm sending out into the universe”, explains Paramida. “And everyone featured on this compilation is someone I deeply connect with, even though it's a pretty unexpected mix of artists. Here’s to the next five years.”

He slithered through the throng. Blinkered to all, with all blind to him, he snaked towards the coffee shop window. He found isolation en masse. And solace. But, looking up for the first time since leaving the house, an image arrested him. “Tu le connais, lecteur, ce monstre délicat, Hypocrite lecteur, mon semblable, mon frère!”

If summer had gone ahead unruined, Maureen’s Tu Me Tues would have been one of its low-key anthems. It’s an easy-on-the-ear cut of Balearic boogie that one can easily imagine floating along a Mediterranean shoreline or ringing across a baked British campsite. Its title translates to “You’re Killing Me”: an appositely grim summation of a holiday season that had its throat cut by a viral assassin. Be that as it may, we can still sip on summer’s September dregs to the tune of this forgotten French groove. It was produced by Michel Bassignani in 1988 and unearthed by the Pardonnez-nous label, who dominated last summer with their reissue of La Compagnie Créole and Larry Levan’s joyous A.I.É.

The St. Petersburg-based label Avacha debuts on our platform with “999% HITS”, a vital 8-track compilation that amasses an interesting selection of domestic and not so domestic artists devoted to presenting the dark side of the contemporary music made both in Russia and the surrounding territories: Panorama Channel, Volta Cab, Wolfstream, White Magik, Soft Metal, Bogdan, Radial Gaze, and Olta Karawane spared no efforts to provide a proper showcase of their production skills, bringing together high standard pieces to enhance the importance of the VA release.

The track we were kindly solicited to review brings Kirill Rem aka White Magik depicting how disco mating with (good quality) early trance elements sounds. “Darkness” is definitely one of the highlights of the compilation. The intense synth layer and the vocal hooks led us into a journey through White Magik’s world: “Esoteric metamodern dance music filled with love, stress, and release.”

A Mountain Of Rimowa is Sean Johnston of A Love From Outer Space and Hardway Bros. Johnston uses the AMOR alias to explore how his varied influences can be wrought into new shapes: mining the past for a path to the future. No More takes the optimism of an 80’s soul staple and reimagines it as a robotic Italo disco anthem. His Sisters and Brothers in the East takes cues from EBM and New Beat but bends them into contemporary forms. Conversely His Sisters and Brothers in the West is a reconstruction of the same material viewed through the lens of 90’s house heads such as Clivilles and Cole - a Music factory for the 21st Century. Joker takes inspiration from early 90’s ambient dub and repurposes it as an early morning work out in the cosmic hole. In line with The EP’s NYC house influence, New York heroes Justin Strauss and Max Pask are invited to remix No More, delivering a tough piano house reading which will work the floor and raise hands.
