Cher Ami, whose name means "dear friend" in French, was a male homing pigeon renowned for his service with the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War I.  Born in Norfolk, England, in 1918, he was among 600 pigeons donated by the British to aid American forces in battlefield communications.  

Cher Ami's most celebrated mission occurred during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in October 1918.  The 77th Infantry Division, later known as the "Lost Battalion," became trapped behind enemy lines in the Argonne Forest and were mistakenly being shelled by their own artillery.  After previous pigeons failed to deliver messages, Cher Ami was dispatched with a plea to halt the friendly fire.  Despite being shot through the breast, blinded in one eye, and having a leg nearly severed, he successfully delivered the message to headquarters 25 miles away in just 25 minutes, saving approximately 194 soldiers.  

For his bravery, Cher Ami was awarded the French Croix de Guerre with Palm and later received the Animals in War & Peace Medal of Bravery posthumously.  After succumbing to his injuries in June 1919, his body was preserved and is now displayed at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History.  

Cher Ami's legacy endures as a symbol of courage and the vital role animals have played in warfare.
