Fresh off the heels of his video for Balaclava, WNDRKND delivers his new song, “Deus,” (pron. day-us) produced by PGMW. Tapping Chicago’s very own Ibn Inglor (New Wave, Gawdspeed) for a feature, “Deus” stands in stark aesthetic contrast to Balaclava. With industrialized instrumentation, provocative lyricism, and a hook sure to piss some people off, “Deus” serves as an occult, explosive and pitch-black cut from the North Carolina Emcee.

“'Deus' is Latin for god, or deity,” says WNDRKND.  “To me, we all have a little bit of god in us. By extension, because I believe this, I see god in myself.  I find this to be true because people, all people, are gifted with the simple ability to create. Whether people wish to acknowledge, and tap into, this part of themselves is another story. If this is farfetched, I get it. But if you can stomach the thought of what I have said, then when you look in the mirror, you’re looking at a god in his face.”

Regarding Ibn’s verse, “I think that Ibn Inglor’s contribution is a very important addition to the track and for this reason: While my lyrical presentation is a passionate, grandiose, and optimistic display of all that is possible through the vein of art, Ibn’s verse is a grounding element—That is, his verse shows the entire underbelly of what it is that I am talking about: extreme fatigue, not knowing when things will stop, bureaucracies, bullshit, and yes, apathy,” says WNDRKND. “Ibn Inglor’s verse, hence, is a direct response to my verses. It pangs the heart, and emotionally ensnares the listener by trying to sound like a diss. It is supposed to sound like a diss. But when you listen carefully, Ibn is preaching a fundamentally true axiom about pursuing success in not just rap, but anything: It all begins when you show an unequivocal commitment to hard work.”

WNDRKND (27) is a rapper hailing from Carrboro, NC. Originally born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, WNDRKND grew up listening to the modern-day gods. His continuous selections of Jay-Z, Nas, Eminem & B.I.G. showed an interest in intricate lyricism, but effectively paired with a pronouncedly dark & dramatic aesthetic which, at the time, was only visible through tales of the street. 
While his music isn’t ostensibly “street,” WNDRKND’s flavor of hip hop is markedly unique, described by some as post-apocalyptic, or industrial, rap. Taking departures from standard producing convention, each of his PGMW-laced tracks are cinematic, epic, spacious, dark, and progressive. 

If asked about his philosophy towards making hip hop, WNDRKND would say that it is an almost-religious experience, with creativity as the one true god. But above all else, regardless of ideology, WNDRKND believes that the ability to make music is a profound gift. 

Ultimately, however, WNDRKND just wants to spread the word, and get it out to the masses. While much of it focuses on life from his vantage point, there is something everyone can get out of his music. Whether it provokes thought, inspires dreams or galvanizes change, who knows? To him, all things are good.
