I wrote this track a couple of days before the Russian large-scale invasion of Ukraine. An hour before all major cities of my country were bombed for the first time I was preparing new music to meet the spring with. Instead, I’ve met the horrible emergency. I’ve learned not to panic in vain, I’ve adapted to sirens and curfew, to a constant need to help others – to wartime. 

The title was supposed to be а self-fulfilling prophecy for me. I am chasing love. Instead, it is hatred for the occupiers that helps me to deal with the new reality today. This and also, pity and disgust for russia. I guess, these feelings will never change, but I want something else. Will my peaceful life ever be back here?

There’s a new trend in Instagram now, which makes Ukrainians «post a random photo before the war». These tiny documents of peaceful times may seem nostalgic because our lives did really change dramatically. But as soon as we refuse to give up on our lost peace, the regretful feeling becomes overshadowed by the will to win. I want this track to be such a document – both nostalgic in the moment and hopeful for the next life, an image of a peaceful world before and after the war.

I guess, after months of infowar I felt the damage to come. Sure, it’s ridiculous how I’ve chosen footage of such simulated destruction in other countries considering how russian missiles ruined Ukrainian cities for real. But I prefer to leave this clip as it is. Video pieces of evidence of russian war crimes are made for the trial, not for music.

Vanessa Amara returns with a new full length for Posh Isolation. Fonetica Amara is an adventurous and uncompromising addition to the body of work that is Vanessa Amara. New music from a truly singular voice in Scandinavian experimental music.

“‘Poses’ was in some weird way a return to form for us, being our first structured work since ‘You’re Welcome Here’. It was also the first music Sebastián and I worked on together after I had moved to Ireland. I don’t think we really knew how to go about having a long distance relationship, separated from the practice we had built in Copenhagen.
I only had my computer to work with and without access to the internet I was stuck with sampling from my digital collection of music. ‘Poses’ is almost solely made using the DAW; Logics pitch shifter plug-in and a quite limited source of samples. But it was inspiring to work with music like this. Having a clear compositional focus on orchestrating and organising rather than squeezing out notes from today’s mood. So without thinking much about it we’ve continued to work like this. We were working on ‘Fonetica Amara’ from October 2020 - December 2021.

I’m sitting here writing this because Posh Isolation don’t know what to think of ‘Fonetica Amara’ and have - on a friendly note - compared it to when Darkthrone released ‘Panzerfaust’.

I guess their point being a departure from trying to be genuine about making music, successfully perceived as being bulletproof serious. I want to believe there’s more nuance to seriousness and I wonder if Darkthrone wasn’t being humorous in their earlier material. The most recent Matrix film moved me to shed some secret tears. Surprisingly so. I’ve wondered why.
I recently made my first friend after moving to Ireland almost 4 years ago. I was volunteering during the West Cork Chamber Music Festival and Kevin Terry, who’s a brilliant composer based in Cork City, was down here with a couple of compositions. One night at the pub I was going on about the beauty of humour in music for a good while and Kevin summed it up perfectly by calling it self-awareness. It was that playful self-awareness that got to me while watching The Matrix: Resurrection.

Since ‘You’re Welcome Here’ we’ve been deviating from a path we might previously have started out on. More than anything we try to change, because we can’t let go of that feeling of not understanding, not knowing, not recognising.
We wish to stay curious about our voice, to not become specific, avoid exercising some kind of “disciplinary correctness” and to “want more questions than answers” (Jack Halberstam’s: The Queer Art of Failure).”

This track for choir, brass and beat was born out of my anger. Sounds like nails hammering into the coffin of the empire, like a generational curse.

With this, I want to say one simple thing that thousands of people in the world are already talking about. The Western media write about it, Anne Applebaum said it in her text for The Atlantic, Timothy Snyder alludes to it in his speeches, and Janusz Bugajski wrote the book «Failed State» about it. Even russian fascists themselves realize this: the russian so-called «federation», as we know it now, won’t exist after the Ukrainian victory. At least I hope so.

I hope for a long and detailed tribunal for every person involved in the russian invasion of my country. A trial is good for everyone as it teaches us something important about ourselves. It teaches justice, without which there is no true freedom.

The only solution I see is complete decolonization. Oppressed nations should decide their fate by themselves. The sooner, the better.
