"Cradle Songs" is dedicated to my children. It is an imagined perspective of an infant in the cradle listening to sounds - some songs from a parent combined with other things. There is a chaos and beauty in this perception. Things adults consider organized and proper may not be so to the brand new mind and ear, though they become so. So it goes in this movement. A "wrong" hearing of "Amazing Grace" begins the movement. It proceeds through half-melodies and astringent activity, through a half-heard blues, to, at last, a clear cradle song.
