Kora style in E

I visited Paris in 2014 to attend a masterclass in kora with Toumani Diabate , this is a peice I have been working on since that visit. Probably the best musical experience I have had, playing and learning with him during the workshop.

I am a Scottish, Edinburgh based guitarist, who is heavily influenced by many different styles from around the world. My instrumental compositions are created drawing on these influences, and  the experience I have had over almost 40 years of playing with a variety of bands. 

Rock; Blues; Funk; African; Jazz; Reggae; Post-Punk; Covers; Weddings  etc…………

When performing I am joined by Pat McCann on percussion, a fantastic musician.

The strongest influence since the 80’s has been the music of Africa in all it’s diversity. Although I saw Toumani Diabate live for the first time  around 1990, it is only in the last couple of years that I have been able to find ways to explore the music of the Kora, inspired by the playing of guitarists like Derek Gripper and Walter Strauss.
Then in Oct 2014 I went to Paris to take part in a kora masterclass with Toumani Diabate himself. A huge privelidge for me and the best musical experience I have had, inspiring me to produce some compositions based on the music of the kora.

The musical links between Blues, African and Celtic can be found throughout my compositions, using rhythmic, harmonic and melodic structures from any form that brings inspiration.
