By definition Neuropsychology is a branch of psychology that is concerned with how the brain and the rest of the nervous system influence our behaviors, thoughts, and feelings. What is a Neuron? Neurons are considered the basic building blocks of life. Previously, scientists believed that most of the neural pathways were established in or early childhood and during our adulthood our brain cells declined over time. Brain Structures and Roles Ninety percent of what we know about the potential of our human brain has been discovered during the last 20 years – it fact we’re only at the tip of the iceberg. Our brain is divided into three main parts, each with distinctive functions. The Primal Brain The first part is known as the primal brain. This section regulates the bodily functions we don’t consciously control, like breathing and sweating.The Primal Brain responses to survival and stress. The Limbic Brain Second is the Limbic brain, which constantly scans our environment for danger or reward. It’s also the emotional hub of our brain, dealing with feelings and memories. It is part of the brain involved in our behavioural and emotional responses, specifically when it comes to behaviors we respond in five ways: Feeding, Fighting, Fleeing, Freeze… and Reproduction. The Executive Brain Third is the Executive Brain which is responsible for reason, analysis, and the handling of emotions that stem from other parts of the brain. It’s the part of our brain focused on controlling behaviors like planning, decision-making, problem-solving, self-control, and acting with long-term goals in mind. Essentially it is focused on transformation, growth and achieving a vision. This mindset is the most powerful but the hardest to sustain. We need our Limbic and Executive brains to work together, otherwise we would continuously fall victim to our impulses. Say you hear something you dislike you and you feel a sudden urge to punch that person in the face – this is the emotional reaction of the limbic brain. But if you pause for a moment and breath, you’ll realize that punching that person could result in a legal action. So you decide to calm down. This is your Executive brain doing its duty and preventing you from impulsive behavior. The 3 brains Did you know you have three brains? Yes, you read that right! You have three brains – your MIND, HEART, and your GUT brain.

Why it’s hard to change your habits? 

Because I believe that a built in reward system leads an internal drive to have you consistently take action. So this is what we know, what we’ve learned in the last decade, about how habits form in our brain. Every habit has three components. There’s a cue, which is the trigger for you to take action, a routine, which is the action itself, and then there’s a reward or consequence.

I agree with the experts that state that most people fail to give themselves a reward for taking action on a healthy habit.

Think about it most healthy habits like exercise don’t cater to instant gratification. And that’s why it’s hard to change your habits.

What I would like to invite you to do by the end of this video is explore where you are today, for two reasons. One: so that you can stick to a healthy habit. And two: that hopefully we can understand more about your habits.

For example, studies have shown that consuming a small amount of chocolate post-workout releases similar chemicals and neurotransmitters to those that will eventually be released by the workout itself.


How do you make a change? Maybe the real question is, I look at life and say there's 40 to 45 percent of my life on autopilot. 

The question we need to ask ourselves really is, what is the motivating reward to apply to the healthy habit? We live in an instant gratification culture and the mindset that we have infinite options and limit time. 

We've got to remind ourselves that having a built-in reward system  is the ultimate will power. The basic question is, why do some people, suddenly lose 60 pounds and start running marathons, or after a lifetime of debt, why do they suddenly change how they spend and go on to be able to save lots of money?


Research found is these are people who suddenly became very deliberate about their habits. There’s a mindset shift about understanding how habits work, because studies show that once you understand, once you know about the structure of a habit, it becomes easier to change that habit. And once you change that habit, you start making these small consistent adjustments to your day that over a year or over a decade can transform your life.

What and when should you eat? Keto diets, Paleo diets, intermittent fasting days, so many options! For myself, if I want to optimize for motivation and energy. I consume meals for fuel. I used to skip breakfast thinking I was saving time, then I’d binge lunch of a burger or slice of pizza, and by the time it was dinner I would eat a big meal. What I experienced was a range of swings of glucose—the fuel for your brain—as I’d go from waking up to low glucose to flooding my body with carbs, and then the inevitable carb crash. It's important to be aware how food affects you so that you can be at your best.  Do you eat food for favor or fuel? Enjoy what you eat is important. However how do we have a strong, healthy, energized mind, body, soul for the rest of your life? I believe it's important to develop a mindset of self-awareness and present in the moment, so that you can consciously make a decision based on what matters most to you, your values, your principles, your vision, rather than habit of automatically react to your emotions, thoughts and actions.
