Mish's mixes are always a psychedelic trip through amphibious forests and slime that crawls on the rocks that these tracks slide over. Known around Bristol for his deep crates and immaculate productions. Waking up the mix with dubstep variations and slipping over through to a heavy section of dub. This ones to melt too.

Today I am so happy to welcome my friend fka boursin to Deep Mind Music, with a quietly reflective entry for the end of January. 

It was around this time of year back in 2022, that I first remember having a deep chat with fka boursin about our mutual interest in the power of ambient. We were both equally enthused to encounter another AmbientAddict and quickly rattled off artists, labels and tracks for each other to check. I have found in fka boursin a similarly discerning soul, not just in music, but life in general, and his intricate mix for Deep Mind Music reflects his thoughtful character.

A patient mix that rewards patient listening, fka boursin has crafted a narrative that skilfully dances between washes of sepia-toned warm drones, and–as he puts it below–“material sounds”, such as whirling whizzes of machines or twittering birds, which give us a sense of place. The perfect soundtrack to a meditative drift of the mind between thoughts and reality. I have greatly enjoyed listening to it on cold misty walks over the past week, and hope you do too ☁️🪶🤍

Some words from fka boursin about the mix:

When considering the themes for this mix, I drew from the different approaches that Sybil and I use in our work. Sybil says that themes for her come from “more of a feeling/colour/texture than something     explainable” which is in contrast with my desire for explicit material reference points. Though these approaches might be seen as existing on a somewhat linear abstract vs material scale, there is a large overlap in the sonic characters that they each employ. Here, I have deliberately mixed with tracks that perhaps encourage one to get “lost” (abstract) before pulling the listener back into the room using what I consider to be “material” sounds. Paradoxically though, those sounds are often perceived as feeling/colour/texture anyway, leading Sybil and I to the same musical end points. To me, this firstly emphasises the limitations of audio and secondly may partly explain why Sybil and I get on so well.

Sleeping is great: it's super good for you and dreams really are special; sometimes, even when they are scary (sometimes). Mine can be pretty crazy but they often help me come to ease with issues that I'm struggling to handle whilst awake, even when I'm not aware of it! 

My friend Saskia has put on an exhibition at sta. in Tokyo questioning this strange but sometimes lovely blur of reality, and kindly asked me to be part of it.

So I've made a sound piece called 'Just Another One Of His Dreams: A piece of three parts'. It's basically a long soundscape that tries to translate the various lucid stages of a dream, typical to one I might have, but maybe you can relate...

The dreamer tucks up under the sheets and different thoughts chime in and out, keeping them from nodding off, before eventually drifting out of mind, lulled into a soft empty space.

Then slowly, the dark side of the subconscious creeps in and takes over, exploring the dreamer's suppressed fears and anxieties, stalking them to a terrifying climax, before fear itself is broken.

Finally, a warming calm washes over in waves, as memories of the past are relived in the only place they can be, before the dreamer is slowly washed back to a shore of consciousness, and the sound of morning birdsong.Sleeping is great: it's super good for you and dreams really are special; sometimes, even when they are scary (sometimes).
