All my life I felt like I was feeding two lives. I was a leader at my church from a very young age. People always looked up to me as the model of what a true christian man was supposed to look like, but behind the scenes I was feeding my fleshly desires. I had a lot of head knowledge so I thought that could get me by, all the while ignoring the things that I was struggling with. And it was easy to hide my imperfections too because I knew a lot about Jesus, I always knew the right verse, and I was raised by two great parents. I would sacrifice true healing to put on a show. It worked for a long time but I’m realizing now that I’m older that the more you sweep things under the rug, eventually you start to notice the pile underneath the covers. I’m discovering how to face my demons and find healing, and as you listen to this song, hopefully you can learn to “Take That Mask Off” as well. There’s TWO SIDES to every coin. Time to flip over.

The world is just full of a bunch of NOISE. I’m an over thinker and I worry about everything. Sometimes it’s best to spend some time by yourself away from all that noise and just focus on you, your mindset, your purpose, your character and your relationship with God. In this song I bring up a whole bunch of topics that have been bothering me/worrying me over the past year. Surrounding myself with the wrong crowd, toxic relationships, my financial situation (“I count 100 million in my sleep, when i get that it seemin like a dream” the mentality that I have where success seems to always be out of reach. It’s best to dream about it instead), etc. this song illustrates the battle of the mind. it’s hard to have discipline to find that time to drown out the world and focus on just yourself and God when it seems like there’s always something going on. the end of the hook describes a conversation I’m having with the two sides of myself, the part of me that knows I need to lock in and the other part that just wants to stay comfortable, worry, overthink and be bitter.

This song is a more in-depth approach on the idea of track 2. You hear all the time that God works all things for the good of those called according to his purpose (Romans 8:28), But life wants to do whatever it can to try and wear out that belief. I’m constantly forcing myself to believe that God will work things out despite what’s going on around me, but it’s difficult in this season. “homie became a wack job trying to make sense of a life working a wack job…” it weighed on my spirit imagining like damn am I gonna be working this 9-5 forever? From failed friendships to thinking that my talent can get me to where I wanted to go, I felt like I was drowning in my own situations and it didn’t help that it was my decisions that led me up to this point of my life. Never mind the sinking feeling you have that you may be alone through it all. It’s always “When’s the next song?” Not “How are you feeling?” And if it is ‘how are you feeling’ the next thing is “Let’s meet this week!” And those plans always fall through. sometimes it’s like why try living right you know? I’ll just go indulge my iniquities to pass the time. God will work it out right…

Ervin Wilson - Bad Nights

This was the first song I wrote for this EP. Before this I was in a serious season where I had no motivation. I was really stuck mentally when it came to music. Everything in my life connects. my job makes the money to fund this whole dream, so when I started struggling financially, along with other situations that made my life tough, my spark for creating music started to dwindle. I was having a conversation with my brother and audio engineer, Jordan Kidd, in the studio one day and i realized that what was stopping my creative process was that i was separating how i was really feeling and was just trying to make a generally good song. i found a track i liked and i decided ‘you know what, lemme just screw it and write how i’m really feeling.’ and the concept of a Real Life Deal was born. this song is a true representation of the mental fatigue i’ve been feeling because of life. it’s a composition of my recent thoughts and has a feel that i’m really just laying everything on the table, finally recognizing that i’m actually going thru real life and ignoring it isn’t gonna help me grow. i gotta use the pain and struggle to move forward. i hope that when people hear this song they can get a glance of me the person, not just the performer. and hopefully through my transparency they can look at themselves, lay all their stresses on the table and say along with me: “all i want is some peace and i’ll be searching forever. i’m askin heavenly father cuz there’s nobody better, like damn…  
i know i need you oh God. i’m workin to get it right for all the people involved.
