Jennifer Johns is a siren, a call to worship, the horns before battle, your spirit’s amplifier.  Vacillating between soul, hip hop, afro beat, dancehall, reggae, deep house and all rhythms in between, this sultry powerhouse produces sounds and experiences that are sure to stir your soul, inspire your mind and move your body.

 

Jennifer has taken her global movement music around the world - rocking stages from Denver to Dusseldorf, Los Angeles to London, Kuala Lumpur to Kampala - opening for some of the best in the business including the likes of Ms. Lauryn Hill, The Black Eyed Peas, Mos Def, Capelton, Jr. Reid, Ziggy Marley, Gil Scott Heron, Wyclef, Bebel Gilberto, Les Nubian, MeShell Ndegeocell, De La Soul and Common to name just a few.  

 

Her journey as a recording artist began in 2004 with the underground success of her first album, HeavyElectroMagneticSoularPoeticJungleHop.   Songs like the title track “Heavy” along with her artfully futuristic video, broke through the national underground scene making Jennifer a notable force in her field.  In 2007 she learned the hard way about industry rule #4080 and was unable to release her sophomore album Painting on Wax, although the project was met yet again with critical acclaim from publications like the Chicago Tribune, SFChronicle, URB, XLR8R and more.  While Painting on Wax never saw the light of day, songs like Ghetto International, Let the Drum Moan and Chasing the Sun made their way to independent radio stations around the world and managed to keep Jennifer relevant in the years to come.  

 

Jennifer continued making music and performing worldwide, however, for the past 8 plus years, Johns has not released much music for public consumption.  Instead of chasing the trappings of pop life, Johns opted to listen to her gut and make an intentional shift in her career.  “I needed some time to remember why I was given this talent and what it is for…”  Instead of performing with marquee names in entertainment, she spent time performing at events with world leaders, such as President Obama’s first presidential debates at Ole Miss or benefits for former Green Czar, Van Jones or alongside Rev. Michael Beckwith.  Her brand of soul stirring sounds landed her gigs at The Kennedy Center, The Apollo, and on stage for both NFL World Bowl and The NFL Hall of Fame.  More than her entertainment honors, Jennifer has spent the last several years gaining accolades in the world of social justice.  Through her work as a Green For All Fellow, a BoldFood Fellow and the Artist in Residence at Food First, Jennifer has used the stage as a means to share vital knowledge on issues ranging from food justice/sovereignty and climate change, to mass incarceration and police brutality.   

 

In 2008 Johns received a grant from the Kapor Foundation and spent a year on the road asking people about their definition of sustainability and poverty for a project she called Go Liv.  “This project changed the trajectory of my career….”  Now, a self-proclaimed Artivist, (artist + activist) Johns acknowledges that part of her life’s work is to leverage her art for social-spiritual change.  “What I came to understand on the Go Liv Tour is that the human mind only creates what it can imagine, I must make art that helps us all imagine freedom, I want to amplify joy and our power together.  That's the revolution”

 

Today, Jennifer Johns is in the midst of creating a new body of work.  Borrowing from all manner of “Afro Diasporic” sounds and rhythms, her lyrics span topics of love, power, freedom and fun..... stay tuned!
