JJ Illgen is a DJ/producer born and raised in Madison, Wisconsin, whose sound is deeply influenced by the Midwest’s rich dance culture, particularly the Chicago house music scene. By immersing himself in underground parties over the years, he was inspired by the core values of unity and togetherness that house music embodies, while infusing his own forward-thinking perspective into his productions.

With a background in Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin, JJ approaches music creation with a unique lens, blending elements in innovative ways. His production style seamlessly fuses new textures with familiar themes, crafting tracks that feel nostalgic yet refreshingly original.

This marks his debut label release, signaling the start of an exciting year ahead. JJ has already made waves with standout sets for House Calls, Penny Whistle, and Smoke & Mirrors, and he’s gearing up for some major shows in 2025.

JJ reflects on this milestone: “Becoming a true artist is something that is very important to me and I want to continue doing things in a different way. The A and B side of this record is some of my proudest work and cannot wait to share it with everyone and begin my journey.”

Joshwa runs his own label No Bad Fridays and its sub-label No Bad Edits, but he’s also released on imprints like Spinnin’ Deep and Hot Creations, and collaborated with artists like Solardo, FISHER and Noizu. In this exclusive interview, we speak to Joshwa about how he built his career: from studying labels and genres to posting free music and creating community through SoundCloud. He gives advice on transitioning from bedroom producer to international touring DJ, how to set up demos the right way, his favorite producer plug-ins and more.
