It was such a tremendous honor to open for a legend and one of my very favorite DJ's, Claptone. This is my direct support set from Q Nightclub - 11/17/2017. It only seemed appropriate to record it as my MIND AT LARGE promo mix. This family has meant the world to me - onwards and upwards.

Opens deep but don't get comfy. The set progresses to funky tech house for most the time, touching back on the deep stuff at the very end.

MeistroMix - Claptone Opening Set

This mix was incredibly special for me. I've been DJ'ing house music for about 5 years now, and as incredible as that journey has been (and will continue to be), I'd reached a point of stagnation. This was coupled with personal struggles, which led to a further sense of detachment from the music I had always found strength in. During this time, I stumbled upon a magical group of people who opened my eyes to an entirely different way of thinking about music and my connection to it. I rediscovered passion and some level of peace. I'll always be a house kid at heart, but this music was a way for me to reinvent the way I thought about myself. I still don't even know what to call it. A bit of world bass, glitch hop, and downtempo beats. Finding flow and transitions was like learning to speak a different language. I'm pretty pumped by the outcome. Tons of room for growth, but I remember that sense of discovery and accomplishment from when I first started DJ'ing. This feels like that. HIs first release, Zach Meissner (Meistro) samples a brass heavy horn section to celebrate his childhood background playing trumpet. The song is an homage to his primary inspiration growing up, jazz trumpet player and director for the Lincoln Center in Manhattan, Wynton Marsalis. The energy of the track pulls back to feature the horn section, returning with a slow building drive to move feet on the dance floor.

There and back again, a Meistro's tale.

I’ve shared this with close friends but the past few years have been rough. I’ve grown so much as a person, but yeah, lots of highs and lows from some inauthenticities that were all of my own making. 

I didn’t know that making this particular track would take me so long because I didn’t know the story I was begging to express beneath the surface. My relationship with music was one of the things that suffered the most, and like many of my friends, you know how tough that is to wrestle with. Music is my source of joy, my sense of self. My favorite producers are those in the Prydz fam and I have so many memories associated with that music and moments/relationships that are part of that past. One of Olander’s tracks inspired me to write this.

The song start outs in that familiar territory of my past, steady, in a groove. The progression to the breakdown leads to the sense of confusion and loss I was feeling. Bits of guilt and self pity mixed in with loneliness and a loss of self. From there it moves into the grit of trying to wrest control back, the sense of triumph but riddled with exertion and lack of balance. Slowly the exertion melts into something more balanced, beauty and celebration make their way back in. The finale represents finding my love for myself again. Sadness, joy, it’s all there, but most of all it is PRESENT. Present to this moment. It ends with a question. What’s next?

Zach Meissner [Meistro] grew up playing music amongst the thriving Seattle jazz scene, playing with the likes of Wynton Marsalis, Quincy Jones, and Reggie Watts. His passion for funk and melodic progression shine through across his wide range of 4/4 genres. Meistro’s pulsing sets span deep house, tribal tech, disco, and melodic techno. His favorite part of DJing within the Pacific Northwest music scene is the dedicated focus on creating safe spaces that draw together community and family. He has worked with a variety of local crews including Studio 4/4, Mind at Large, and Noise Complaint.
