Ashland Mines, AKA Total Freedom, AKA Big Gay Idiot DJ, AKA Bobby Beethoven, is one of the best and most influential DJs of the 21st century. Starting out at pioneering parties like Mustache Mondays and Wildness (which he cofounded with Wu Tsang)—and a regular at GHE20G0TH1K—Mines helped to define the style that would become known, however cringe-inducingly, as experimental club or deconstructed club, directly inspiring fellow visionaries like Arca. 

Like some of the best DJs before him, Mines uses the CDJs as an instrument, but that doesn't mean just fancy tricks and looping. Instead, he artfully throws together clashing sounds—effects, samples, monologues, pop and R&B acapellas, and beats that run the gamut from dancehall to kuduro to breaks and techno. He's not afraid of the grotesquerie of human life and movement (just check out the monologue at the beginning of this mix), and he likes to push buttons. Once he put on a party where dancing wasn't allowed. Some of his sets are intentionally anxiety-inducing, evoking horror movies and modern classical composers like Penderecki, while others are bouncy and ebullient, weaving between genres and tempos like an old-school platformer. The best are both.

On Mines's RA Podcast—a milestone 900th in the series—he shows off this inimitable style, sharpened and reinforced over a decade-and-a-half of playing some of the world's best parties, fashion shows, you name it. He's the kind of DJ who creates his own music as he goes along. He makes you hear old tracks—especially pop music and R&B—in a whole new way. Titled "Cursed Piercing," this is a near-hour of controlled chaos that'll confound you at one moment and deeply move you the next.

For this week’s episode of CENTER BOOTH we’re delighted to share a start-to-finish thrill ride from one of the most exciting artists working today: estoc. The Philadelphia-based DJ and producer is well known for her dazzling, highly inventive sets, intricate, compelling releases spanning the gamut of genres, startling, often hilarious mash-ups and edits, and uncompromising politics that are the lifeblood of her art. 

Her visceral, take no prisoners approach to DJing has seen her summoned to play transgressive techno parties all over the US, Europe, the UK, Asia and Australia, while her latest LP, Are We Doomed To Bow Down To The Stupid And Cruel? is a growling, guttural response to fascism, colonization and other craven ideologies.

Her CENTER BOOTH set, which plays in a live and compositional fashion, comes from that same place of staunch resistance, both a source of release and fuel for the ongoing fight. It’s hypnotic not in its repetition but in its restlessness, a disorienting rollercoaster of cacophony, distortion and aggressive melodies.

The effect is something like strapping in for a full throttle VR experience, a quest soundtracked by creeping pads, all manner of belligerent percussion, itchy snares and the full kitchen sink of FX. Featured artists include DJ Plead, WTCHCRFT, Dave Quam, estoc herself on remix duties, and the Prodigy, overlaid with extra thundering drums. We’d call it a masterclass but estoc is an artist who simply can’t be imitated.

A polygon is a flat, two-dimensional shape with three or more straight sides. Low-polygon graphics were defined by the hardware limitations of the 1996's playstation era, which resulted in blocky, low-resolution visuals that were still considered groundbreaking for their time. DJ working class, this time, wobbles and warps the floors and walls of a loading map. A square sun rising above a bricked environment. The sound renders in simplified geometry. A perfect cubic meltdown.

The legendary Bobby Beethoven needs no introduction, but we’ll indulge you: the globetrotting DJ formerly known as Total Freedom is a well-decorated multidisciplinary artist, daddy of the iconic GHE20G0TH1K night alongside Venus X, and a visionary mixing maestro whose inventive style defined a decade of young, inquisitive artists keen to unravel the conventions of DJ'ing through the limitless tools of the modern CDJ. You’ll find him playing a wide range of parties around the world, from fashion afters in Paris like Ciccolina, underground nights in Tokyo or Istanbul, festivals like Draaimolen or Honcho, his ability to work his sound into any setting is unparalleled.

Brooklyn’s HMX (fka Hitmakerchinx) is a producer and DJ cut from the same cloth: a
wildly talented dancer and flex dance music force pushing energetic, innovative rhythms that fuse cultural influences and forge new sounds. His current obsession is flex dub music, an offshoot of the original FDM genre that reconfigures dance battle music for a global audience.

The two established and emerging talents join forces here for an hour of pure heat; a rollicking ride through a dizzying range of low-slung, bass-heavy music loaded with soul and sass. The chemistry between the two is palpable and adorable as they tee up everything from amapiano to shatta to busted ballroom to post-punk and much, much more.
