I once believed that trans women couldn’t openly be loved by cis men. That was until I met my then bf who showed me that trans women were loveable by non-DL men. But 2 years ago, he raped me while I was unconscious. I asked him about it when I woke up, and he told me that nothing happened. I knew something was off, but he was the only man who openly loved me even before I started transitioning. So I forced myself to believe what he told me for the sake of that image of “love.”

But a year later, I found that he had taken naked photos of me unconscious on the hotel bed—my intuition was right: he raped me. I panicked & deleted all the photos (my only evidence). I threatened him via text, causing him to press charges against me for Terroristic Threat. I spent 2 days in a men’s jail. 

Seeing myself go from being an NYU student to sitting in a cell with a felony opened my eyes to see how much I had lost myself for the sake of “love.” I was so focused on myself growing up, but I forgot who I am.

So I turned to spirituality to heal the little girl in me when I got out. I learned that sunflowers are always facing & following the sun, which is symbolic of overcoming & moving to brighter days. Sunflowers seem to always be SMILIN 2 THE SUN even during the darkest hours. So I chose to embody the essence of a sunflower by designing this gown & making this song. 

The case is ongoing—I’ll probably never get justice. But even when the shadows engulf me, may this project be a reminder that brighter days are on the horizon. Keep buying yourself flowers, go on solo dates, & please keep SMILIN 2 THE SUN like a sunflower because you will overcome. Àṣẹ
