Walk Away - Glastonbury mix

An original song now sung by JJ Jam. I have been working on this song with gifted student Josna Samuel and Music Tutor Peter Huntington. I started writing the song some months ago with a mind to workshop the final product with our music gifted and talented students.  Josna completed the lyrics based on the title, 'Since You've Been Gone' and also further developed the basic melody to highlight her range. I think she did a wonderful job! Peter helped with the structure and many other helpful suggestions as well as play keys throughout our writing workshops Thanks to all  who performed on this track and special thanks to audio engineer, James Patterson. This is not the final track by any means but was a rough mix to act as a vocal guide. Better mix to come.  It is a lament about losing someone you love.  We have several more original tracks in the pipeline which include some extraordinary talented from Malachi, Micah, Raquel, Shannon and Zac. Several of our gifted students also performed during the workshop lessons including Tyrese and Chris on drums, Micah on bass and Hamish on guitar. Thanks to the G twins for covering backing vocals during the workshops!


"Since You've Been Gone" - original from our 2013-14 student writing workshops

In 1970 we went into Cherry Pie Studios in Sydney to record our second vinyl record. We chose as one of the songs, "Supernatural", a Peter Green song that we had come to love off John Mayall's 1967 Album "Hard Road". I had just purchased my '69 Les Paul Professional and a hand signed Marshall stack that previously belonged to Status Quo. I remember having grown into guitar playing a Fender Jazzmaster with a whammy bar, so I had to re-learn how to use finger vibrato. I was still learning at this stage! Such a young player then. But I do love the classic sound of the Les Paul out of the 100 watt Marshall. Also love Craig Kirchner's Hammond organ sound through a Leslie speaker and his tasteful solo. Not surprising this minor blues idea developed for Peter Green into his mammoth Black Magic Woman hit by Santana and Fleetwood Mac (Peter was a founding member of course). Late last year I had the pleasure of working with Peter Green's engineer/producer on a recording job. Simon Dodd, knowing my admiration of Peter Green, invited in his brother who is the other guitarist in Peter Green's band. We had a great time taking about the Supernatural track! Apparently we were the first band in Australia to cover Peter Green!

S'cool Real Me

This was the first song I wrote for the high school musical, "S'cool", first performed at The Entrance High School, NSW Australia in May-June and December, 1980. The Head Teacher had asked me to produce a typical Broadway show, but I convinced him to let me and our drama teacher, Mark Paskal, have a go at writing a musical centred around two days at a typical 70's high school in Australia. I remember writing the song the same night that he agreed.So I took my guitar and a kazoo into his office the very next day and performed this song, which is somewhat inspired by the Bugsy Malone speak easy club scenes.It of course needed to be ina traditional New Orleans jazz style with a lyrical theme that runs through the entire musical; i.e. longing and belong... being accepted into the clicks and peer groups that exist in all schools.The show ran many seasons around Australia and New Zealand with wide acclaim, including being featured at the 1983 Adelaide Youth Festival. There is a wide variety of musical styles with most of the other 21 songs and instrumentals having a more rock and pop flavour.
Interesting to note that many of our original cast and musicians went on to bigger things, including our original lead role being chosen as the lead in London's first West End production of "Grease" in the 1990's (Craig McLachlan).

Welcome to the Gang

One Sweet Day’ – Song Lesley and Sarah, friends to Kiyan Prince (knife crime victim of May 2006).
A few months after his death in Edgware, close friends Lesley and Sarah, students in my GCSE music class expressed their heart in a song of goodbye. It not only earned Lesley an A* in performance, it took Sarah and others all the way to Glastonbury in 2009 with their own anti-knife crime composition, ‘Walkaway’ and won them the International Nobel Peace of Art Award in 2008, 2 years after Kiyan’s tragic death.

Here is a delightful Christmas children's song I had the privilege to be the vocal director/arranger for a Warner Brothers Looney Tunes Christmas compilation back in the early 90's. We recorded it in EMI Studios in Sydney and I got to work with John Vallins who composed this song. My young daughter Clare is on the lead vocals ( sounds like an angel!) with Jodie on the duet section. I used a select group of singers from the  Forrest Primary School on Sydney's Northern Beaches as the main choir as I needed very young voices to capture the Disney type sound we were after. The cartoon characters where dubbed on by the amazing Keith Scott. This was distributed throughout Australia and the USA during Christmas 1991.
