'Two sides of every story'?
Related to this title is the the death of the man who 'inspired' the song by Bob Dylan.

Compare the facts as told by Dylan and those described in The Times (Ben Hoyle January 12, 2009 reprinted in The Australian).

Dylan: "William Zanzinger killed poor Hattie Carroll
With a cane that he twirled around his diamond ring finger
At a Baltimore hotel society gath’rin’."

    Times: "A large man, he became aggressive, using a toy cane to hit several employees and insulting them racially. When Ms Carroll was too slow serving him a bourbon, he hit her, too. Hours later she collapsed, dying in hospital the following day."

Dylan: "She was fifty-one years old and gave birth to ten children...
Got killed by a blow, lay slain by a cane
That sailed through the air and came down through the room,"

    Times: "The real Hattie Carroll was black (although the song does not spell this out), a 51-year-old mother of 11 (not 10, as Dylan sang) who lived in Baltimore, was a pillar of her local church and suffered from heart problems."

Dylan: "And handed out strongly, for penalty and repentance,
William Zanzinger with a six-month sentence."

    Times: "He was charged with homicide, but this was reduced to manslaughter after the medical report came through citing the cause of death as a brain haemorrhage brought on by the stress of the incident. The lenient sentence was designed to keep Zantzinger out of state prison, where it was feared that the majority black prison population might turn on him.

Dylan: "William Zanzinger, who at twenty-four years
Owns a tobacco farm of six hundred acres
With rich wealthy parents who provide and protect him"

    Times: "In the song, he owns a 600-acre tobacco farm with "rich wealthy parents who provide and protect him". The reality was slightly less grand: Zantzinger worked on his land alongside black and white labourers.

What the Times (and therefore the Australian) forget is that the song is a depiction of a political reality and uses a real story to convey that reality. So be careful all those literalists out there, Dylan songs may not be factually correct.

'You who philosophize disgrace and criticize all fears bury the rag deep in your face' is both a dramatic device and the sermon of the song.

'The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll ' does tell the tragic story of both Hattie Carroll and a whole generation of black workers. Zantzinger 'was also convicted in 1991 of a scam in which he charged poor black workers rents on ramshackle properties that he no longer owned. He was fined $US62,000 and sentenced to 2400 hours of community service' (Times article). The sermon is difficult to decipher but I think its means that liberals who abstract the suffering of the poor should pay heed to the reality of injustice ('the ladder of the law has no top and no bottom'), class ('he spoke through his cloak both deep and distinguished'), corruption ('high office relations in the government of Maryland') and racism ('swear and sneering and his tongue it was smiling').

Each day brings news of more Palestinian civilians killed and injured in Israeli airstrikes across Gaza. Homes, schools, hospitals, farms – nothing is spared. Nowhere is safe. Hunger, thirst and disease have emerged as an even greater threat than bombs. Gaza’s 2.2 million people are trapped without food, water and healthcare. Israel is using starvation and thirst as weapons of war and refusing to provide unhindered safe access for humanitarian aid to meet the needs of civilians. UN oﬃcials and aid agencies alike, along with hundreds of scholars and practitioners of international humanitarian and genocide law are warning Israel is carrying out genocide.  

The UN General Assembly has called for a ceaseﬁre. The UN Security Council has failed to do so because the US blocks it. South Africa is asking the International Court of Justice to order a ceaseﬁre because of the genocide underway. Jordan has opened a ﬁeld hospital in the Gaza strip and airlifted supplies in. Yemen’s Ansarallah (Houthi) movement is attacking ships supplying Israel, in the Red Sea. Instead of supporting South Africa’s case, or trying to send aid, Australian government oﬃcials continue to pretend Israel’s aims are legitimate. But there is nothing legitimate about genocide and war crimes.

The Arabic word for flag is Alam. And it's also the subject of a film, a sad film, but very insightful too. Its about Palestinian kids that are being taught by Israeli teachers. And they hate it. And every time something happens in the community under occupation, the kids want to raise the Palestinian flag. 

Sometimes one of their comrades would get killed, shot by the Israelis, as is happening now in Gaza and on the West Bank. 

They would raise the Palestinian flag and the black flag to commemorate the death of their friends. 

This a similar story a symbol of resistance happened today (9 March 2024) in Magandjin, and that's Brisbane, in Queensland, where we had the march of 1000 flags. Here is that story ...

Dancing Aborigine

The song is called “Gari Gynda Narmi” or sometimes written as “Gurri Ngindin Narmi“. This version is by a songman, Uncle Country Matheson, who passed away a few years ago. The song is sacred and recorded as an intro to the Paradigm Shift by permission from Uncle Country's sister.

Gari Gynda Narmi is originally a Waka Waka song, but with the dispersal and cross-pollination of aboriginal cultures (plus the fact it has easy to remember words and dance moves) means it has become a welcome song of all aboriginal nations in south-east Queensland.

Gari Gynda Narmi has appeared in a few rock versions too, in Mop and the Dropouts song “Dancing Aborigine” and a beautiful acoustic version by Joe Geia which helpfully includes an English translation!

The image is of a brother now passed, Kevin Vieritz who is carrying the sacred fire in Musgrave Park, Brisbane, while it was under attack by Queensland authorities in 2011-12. Kevin gave evidence in a trial over the sacred fire after he had been arrested on a number of occasions.
