IAN FORMATION was first introduced to the dance music scene as a DJ in 1995 at drum & bass and hip hop parties in Braunschweig, Germany. It was there that he would shape his free stylin´ skills on the turntables and get dubbed by local ravers IAN FORMATION, due to his rock-solid live sets.

Having experienced rave parties first hand, 22 year old Ian was the initiator of a record-label and -store in Essen 2002 Riset Records, specialized in urban breakbeat music — also selling skateboards, Ian is a skater in the streets since childhood. With big party events in 2004 such as Swift Cushion in Essen (alongside UK drum & bass producer Dom & Roland), Whole Punch in Bremen, featuring ex- Usual Suspects UK d&b producer Keaton and Whole Punch II in Köln, promoting Norwegian, d&b producers Future Prophecies, it was hard to not be overwhelmed by the constant flux of new music, DJs and ravers all lost within the vibe. 

Those events — and his introduction into Jazz composition and studio technology at the age of 14  — encouraged Ian to lend his hand to production. A session with DJ Danger in a Köln studio lead to the duo´s first release, Dragon´s Lair, a 12” on Riset Records, launching IAN FORMATION onto the underground DJ circuit in Germany. He has been active within the globalised dance music scene as a DJ ever since, having under his belt diverse sets of cutting edge urban-, dance- and disco-sounds. “Whatever makes the crowd rock..” In short, the works of god might be displayed in him. He is currently translating this into his new production style — since 2011 — of only using sine waves.
