“the Great Wave” is an oldest daughter anthem, blending oceanic imagery with a powerful piano hook that mimics the rise and fall of the waves. Inspired by the Japanese block print “The Great Wave Over Mount Fuji”, this song equates the print’s two characters (the wave and the mountain)  to my brother and I. Acting as Mount Fuji, I explore the ways I feel unseen by my family (the viewers) and overshadowed by my brother (the great wave) while I grapple with the fact that the wave’s anger and rage is something I could have quelled if I had been around more often.
