Japan-born Berlin-based composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Midori Hirano contributes to the Xenomorph Radio series with a sinister yet radiant exploration of diverse music. Although Midori’s musical roots are classical, her name has been resonating within the experimental music circuit for years now - recognized for her articulated piano manipulations and notable releases on labels like Sonic Pieces, Longform Editions and Daisart. This two-hour mix evolves around musically and geographically different contexts, as explicitly meant by the artist, and includes “a collection of electronic music produced by the artists who have different origins; the majority consists of East Asia and Africa, and the few others are from middle eastern countries. And some of the artists seem to have multiple ethnic identities, or just expats like me.. most of the tracks are just pure beautiful dark ambient music, field recordings of nature, or hyper cut-up-style electronic music which probably doesn’t need to be categorised as anything.”

A powerful, collaborative split between Sangam and Plains Apparition, laid out as six original tracks each as well as two collaborative tracks ending each side. Sangam brings their characteristic rain soaked melancholic ambience while Plains Apparition moves deftly between different styles that culminate in a beautiful sonic array. They did two collaborative tracks for the release that showcase the intersection of their talents. Truly stunning and transportive works.

This is an awkward album. Some of this awkwardness is unconscious and unplanned, the by-product of lo-fi techniques and studio ineptitude. Some is planned and conscious, the product of searching for rifts, of searching for “the symbols of the divine that show up in the trash stratum” (Philip K. Dick). Through awkwardness and juxtapositions, glimpses of something else can be seen, a something that is lost in the polished, the tuned, the smooth. Partly because I believe ‘better’ works often come with their own inbuilt responses, by engaging with them they engender a set reaction, so there is simply no room nor stimulus for the listener/reader/viewer’s own interpretation and thoughts. The art has become artifice – merely propaganda or pornography. 

By embracing the rifts, the imperfect, the awkward, and the juxtaposition, we turn our backs on works that are apparently perfect reflections, as comforting and numbing as they are, of a reality that doesn’t really exist anyway. To push further, alongside art, we need other, obsolete modes of thinking, approaches that, well, capitalism has forced out. We need more magic, more religion. Through art, magic, religion, we can push back, think for ourselves and finally see the radical mystery, the Other, the divine behind everything, and that makes life, and by extension, us anything but irrelevant. 

All that from some static and too much reverb.
