Program Notes:

As I wrote most of this piece, I was thoroughly engrossed in George Orwell’s 1984. During the final stages of composition, I looked back at the music and realized that its form and content resemble the novel’s plot to a remarkable degree. I suppose it is inevitable that the things we read will influence the music we compose—to varying extents, of course—but in this case the ties were so strong that I felt compelled to dedicate the piece to Orwell and his prescient, incisive masterwork.

Room 101 roughly tracks the events of 1984 through the following progression of aural “scenes”: the dystopian, almost dreamlike world of Oceania to which the reader is introduced at the outset of the book; the life and mind of protagonist Winston Smith, who is aware of his world’s blatant disregard for truth and yet is deathly afraid that his “thoughtcrime” will be discovered; Winston’s emboldened defiance of the Party upon meeting fellow dissident and future lover Julia; his (admittedly inevitable) capture by the Thought Police and subsequent imprisonment in the Ministry of Love; and, finally, his unshakeable sense of foreboding upon being summoned to the infamous Room 101, the mysterious, eminently terrifying place in which the Party keeps the greatest of all evils. And what might that be? According to Orwell, we already know:

“What is in Room 101?”
 
The expression on O’Brien’s face did not change. He answered drily:
 
“You know what is in Room 101, Winston. Everyone knows what is in Room 101.”
