ColorJaxx - Just About Right (Original Mix)

Dam Swindle delve deep into the Salsoul Records impressive back catalogue to present another two fresh, exciting remixes and edits of two of the label’s classics - Double Exposure ‘Everyman’ and Kongas ‘Kongas Fun’, released on 27 August. 

Following the duo’s acclaimed Vol.1 of remixes and edits of First Choice ‘Let No Man Put Asunder’ and Kebekelektrik ‘War Dance’, Dam Swindle immediately selected Double Exposure ‘Everyman’ because “the original had everything in it to get a classic Dam Swindle treatment”. Their remix takes the original up a tempo, yet still showcases the swirling strings and deliciously soulful Double Exposure vocals.

As with Kebekelektrik ‘War Dance’ from Vol.1, Dam Swindle chose Kongas ‘Kongas Fun’ which is a side project of Cerrone who, like Gino Soccio, was “so influential in the history of disco”. The vibrant, shimmering update is packed full of energetic percussion and proves why Dam Swindle chose to rework this lesser-known delight.  

Since forming in 2011, Amsterdam-based Lars Dales and Maarten Smeets aka Dam Swindle quickly broke through the electronic music scene. They have become known for their widescreen approach to making and playing club-ready grooves. From deep to disco, tech to soul, they join the dots between the past and the present with their own sense of storytelling and do so in clubs around the world, and in their own studio. 

Salsoul Records was founded in 1974 in New York by the Cayre brothers and represented names such as Loleatta Holloway (Love Sensation), First Choice, Instant Funk, Joe Bataan, The Salsoul Orchestra and produced some of the most sampled and beloved records of all time.

 Two of Ibadan's usual suspects team up for one of the labels greatest moments.

Kerri Chandler and Jerome Sydenham bring an exceptional House flavor to NYC Band, The System. They've added new flavor with fresh and innovative production techniques to one of NYC most popular Synth/Pop outfits. 'You're In My System' is clear proof why. Kerri steps in to remix the track with four new versions.

The A1, is the bearer of the You’re In My System (Atmospheric Vocal). A catchy Rhodes melody enters you into the system of what is soon to be taken over by a heartfelt Garage style male vocal.

The A2, is a tried and true dub version of the original. However, the lack of vocals only puts more focus on the escalating and driving horn section.

B1 gets bi-lingual for all our Latinos. "Estas en mi sistema!"

Wrapping up this release on the B2, is Kerri's pure DJ version. Fully equipping, You’re In My System with juicy 909 hats and crackling snares while adding more emphasis to the bass line. An extended breakdown also creates an added element of suspense.

This is New York House at its best. Feel good club music that puts a smile on your face and a little swing in your hips.

The System - You're in my System (Atmospheric Vocal)

Jerome and Dennis are back with all new mixes of their stone cold classic, 'Timbuktu'.

'Timbuktu' sees long-time associates Ferrer and Sydenham going out with some techy house flavors on Ibadan, with a solid groove joined by a sublime synth stab and some great chant snippets, while a driving bassline and great percussion elements fatten out the track nicely. Two mixes here, and there's really nothing to choose between them, so we'll let you decide your favorite.

Another smash hit - with some brilliant vocal acrobatics added by Vera Mara - grace this beautiful percussion-spiced and string-laden journey into deepness. 

Sydenham & Claussell, team up again for another excursion into organic House. Both letting the spirits of their ancestors from maternal and paternal sides channel through their consciousness to invigorate their productions with a true spiritual essence. A collaboration that results in the namesake, 'Je Ka Jo' - an obvious derivative of their names, - combined with the vocal talents of Vera Mara. 

A short movie with the title, "The Making Of ‘Je Ka Jo’ ", would have been quite easy to produce provided a camera was lurking about in the Axis Studios in NYC. 11 artists participated in this production, which would have made the studio busier than a New Jersey DMV. The, (Crazy Vocal Mix) features all of those artists involved with a final mix from Jerome and Joe that would have gone on long after the cameras stopped rolling. 

As the name would suggest, the (Drums of Passion Mix), sheds the vocals, strings, violin and bass guitar in favor of a full on jungle navigated percussion workout. Clearly a useful tool inspired by the rhythms of the original, through the organic drumming. 

Back to basics, is the motto with, ‘Je Ka Jo (Original Vocal Mix)’. Traditional percussion with less dramatization and a more conventional mixing techniques, with the vocal as the focus, while the instruments each fill their respective space in the back ground of the frequency range.

 The dream team of Ferrer and Sydenham fabricate yet another seminal track.

Ferrer and Sydenham have been consistently knocking out superb stuff on Jerome’s Ibadan label for years. 'Sandcastles' keeps the streak going.

The original 'Sandcastles' - with its sublime piano line coming into its own late in the mix after a lengthy lead in of subtle percussion, throbbing bass drums and stellar synth play. A warm and lush track that utilizes building beats that emit a piano line and finally a wall of synth strings, round this track off perfectly.

Pressed up the same on both sides, as if he knew this one would get an extra amount of play. A confidence that can be traced back through the numerous amounts of seminal releases this man has had a watchful eye over.

If there was an essential Ibadan release – and an argument can be made for many of them in some form or another – this would certainly be high up on the list.
