German nu jazz stalwarts Micatone return to Sonar Kollektiv after a six year hiatus with the ethereal and emotionally charged coming-of-age piece, Where Do You Belong?

The core duo of the band, Boris Meinhold on guitar and synths and Lisa Bassenge on vocals, have been making music for the label for over two decades, with five studio albums and numerous singles to date.

Where Do You Belong? was inspired by singer Lisa’s now nineteen year old daughter at a time when she was trying to find her place in the world. Lisa explains that the “song (is) about the in-between state humans find themselves in when they grow up. A phase where life seems full of possibilities, shiny and brand new but at the same time scary and somehow overwhelming.”

The track was produced during COVID lockdown with Boris using field recordings, guitars, an old organ bass pedal and choir that give the track that celestial feel. Lisa wrote the melodies and lyrics over the top and asked vocalists Lilian Bennett-Schaar, Johanna Maisel and Josephine Pritz to sing the choral parts.

Label head honcho, Oliver Glage, then had the idea of Stefan Leisering, of Jazzanova, providing the programmed drums, and the track was complete. An elegant, touching and yet somewhat intangible new offering, and the first of a little series of pieces out on the label in 2023.

This track is from a collection of tunes from the live streamed sessions with Slamhaus. While bands or users will inspire me, every song was composed live on stream without any pre-thought melodies, progressions or beats. Watch a piece of music composed 100% in front of your eyes.

February 28th {Spring Chicken}

German nu jazz stalwarts Micatone continue their comeback journey with Ping Pong, the follow up to the ethereal and emotionally charged coming-of-age piece, Where Do You Belong?

The core duo of the band, Boris Meinhold on guitar and synths and Lisa Bassenge on vocals, have been making music for the label for over two decades, with five studio albums and numerous singles to date.

Like many women, Lisa suffers from severe Premenstrual Syndrome, or PMS, but hers is particularly pronounced as it’s coupled with a form of ADHD. The song’s lyrics, and title, reflect on methods of coping with the symptoms that arise due to her “neurotransmitters playing ping pong” in her brain.

The song itself has something of a moody 60’s latin-jazz feel with obscure samples and subtle electronics doing just enough to counteract the retro ambience. The driving force throughout (aside from Lisa’s heartfelt vocal) is a guitar recorded through an old telephone receiver and the beats programmed by Stefan Leisering. The Jazzanova producer’s drum track remains somewhat understated though, and leaves ample room for Lisa’s vocal to shine, whilst also giving off something of a 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover touch.

Micatone - Ping Pong

1. Blood in the Water: A hard-hitting, aggressive anthem that reflects on resilience and overcoming adversity. The title track sets the tone for the album with its intense beats and powerful lyrical delivery.

2. Rowdy Rowdy and Bout It Bout It (feat. Lofi Phonk): A high-energy collaboration that blends raw, unapologetic vocals with a chill, laid-back lo-fi beat, creating a unique and unexpected dynamic.

3. Gravity's Wave: A melodic and introspective track that explores the inevitable pull of life's forces. The song's smooth rhythm and thoughtful lyrics create a sense of floating through challenges.

4. Hadoken (Darc Reign Variant): This track is a direct and impactful banger, a variant of a previous release, showcasing a faster pace and more intricate flow, like a powerful punch.

5. Under Da Sea: A fun, lighthearted track that serves as a moment of reprieve. It's a whimsical dive into a carefree world, with bouncy beats and playful wordplay.

6. Skinny and Reo (feat. Ronnie D & Donny the Producer): A collaboration track with a classic feel, bringing together multiple perspectives over a smooth and sophisticated beat.

7. Dare You Threaten Me!: A track that combines a sense of bravado and confidence with a slightly menacing undertone. It's a lyrical challenge laid down to anyone who doubts the artist's ability.

8. Tidal Power: A powerful, flowing track that builds in intensity like a surging tide. The song is an ode to inner strength and the ability to command one's own destiny.

9. Undertow Anthem: An immersive and emotional track that pulls the listener in with its depth and complexity. It's a deeper cut that rewards repeat listens, revealing new layers each time.

10. Undertow Anthem: (The image shows "Undertow Anthem" listed twice.) If this is intentional, this second track could be a different mix or a live version, perhaps a quieter, more acoustic take that contrasts with the first version's energy.
