Lost Carvings

This week's Disquiet Junto was to make a drone using only your voice.

I recorded each of the syllables of the word Amoeba into my old Sony cassette dictaphone using the in-built mic. Then sampled each of these into a track on the Elektron Octatrack, plus a nice inhale I liked and a section of the tape noise.
I then set up a somewhat unpredictable playback system using conditional playback trigs so the samples don't always play. I also performed over the top of this changing fx parameters, sample pitches and levels. Finally everything is run through a master on the Octatrack with a tuned comb filter and huge Dark Reverb, and because it's drone it's also sent through an almost infinite modulated reverb on an Alesis Quadraverb+
Sorry it's 12 minutes long, I'm really not sure how that happened.

Rob Hordijk's module "Benjolin" represents a central sound source in this composition, whereby the sometimes "chaotic" sounds, which are created by the extraordinary circuit structure, give an idea of how uncontrollable and unpredictable not only our physical environment is, but also our own life as well as its end.

Recorded in Roberts Creek British Columbia at the BADASS (Beach Avenue Design And Sound Studios) an exclusive and privately owned waterfront recording studio - the sound is unique and flavored with 60s 70s and 90s spices. 

"As a band we've played some pretty amazing cocktail lounges and we also record in some great studios but BADASS is another level. It was off the charts mind blowing. A real great place to make music with vintage gear mixed with high tech, it's by invite only so we feel really blessed when we are there. You feel at home pretty quick drinking a Hennessy or chilling on the restoration hardware couches and then you look out at and there are hump back whales going past and a bald eagle sitting right there, Its freaking mind blowing and really added to our mindset in a positive way. Still drank way too much though that also added flavor.."

The song is 110 bpm and just over 6 minutes in length. A great tribute to the rock and roll lifestyle. Leading in with a clean guitar riff and the subtle sounds of an electric piano the beat kicks in and drives the song with strong vocals similar to a Burton Cummings sound and a great fun original narrative.

Back up vocals are raw and powerful adding to the narrative. A technical note of interest that the backup vocals were each doubled up and slightly off set to get that great edgy sound. 

"This was such a great song to write and play. I feel it gives homage to all the awesome years we've had as a band together. We're not crazy like we were but we can still run up a bar tab pretty good. It was fun and I want to thank BADASS for thie hospitality and I look forward to seeing the guys again soon on tour." Doonesbury lead singer and creative director.

Guaranteed to get folks up and dancing Gotta Get High is released on Shaffer Music label. 

Look for the song available on 7" vinyl, CD, streaming and possibly…tape cassette? Who knows.

The Doonesbury Band will be releasing tour dates asap for thie Slow Down album released in July 2022.
