Things that don't exist, that don't seem to exist, or we don't believe exist, might be the only things that actually exist.
Things that i always believed that existed, seem to be an illusion.
And things that i always denied the existence of in the past, seem to be what shape reality and rule the world.
But what is reality? And what is illusion?
Is the reality i am seeing the same as yours?
Perhaps not.

”Senno I” is the solo debut album by Tot Onyx aka Tommi Tokyo, who has been a founding member of the Japanese performance art/live electronics duo group A since 2012. They incorporated the use of the body in their noise & poetry-performances and they made some resonating appearances at festivals like Berlin Atonal. Adept at bending expectations, both live and recorded, the band’s formative early work echoes the experiential vocabulary in which Tommi continues to develop today. A practice in the rejection of tradition and cliché, which in Greil Marcus's words, "Share the principles of negation, rebellion, destruction and détournement”.

Tommi Tokyo has worked in graphic design and photography and has worked for theatre and other forms of stage arts. Tot Onyx is her deeply personal project which shares the founding energies of group A, but is traveling deeper and elsewhere. This is a rich study of her interior life.

“Why is female sound bad to hear?” - Anne Carson

ELEKTRA (Scream Through the Eyes of a Statue), is a multimedia performance broadly conceptualizing the female voice as an “X-ray to the bones of sound.” It was commissioned by Issue Project Room and performed April 26th, 2018 in Brooklyn, New York.  Taking poet, essayist, and Classics professor Anne Carson’s translation of Sophocles’ tragic play Elektra as a point of departure, James K monstrously externalizes the inner sonic world of female vocalization through a scored collaborative framework interpreting each of Elektra’s “screams” in the Greek tragedy.

The piece develops unique methods of screaming through musical and non-musical objects -- performed through manipulated text, videos, and live contributions from James K (voice, electronics, violin, video) Brooklyn-based musician Eve Essex (alto saxophone, various winds and electronics), electronic producer and performer Dylan Shir (electronics), composer and cellist Leila Bordreuil (cello), and poet/artist Eli V Manuscript (textual alchemy, projections).

Within this collaborative framework, James K scores “the scream” to express the various relations between hysteria and the “gender of sound” -- a blurred and overlapping feminine sound defined by its fragmentation and resistance to scripted narrative. Elektra’s presence is emblematic of a radical alienation that occurs as a standing discrepancy to tragic convention. Amongst society, she is the anti-dialogue, a symbol of protest.

‘my cries are wings, they pierce the cage’

Elektra’s vocalizations pierce through language, revealing a shattered interior of multifaceted reflections constructed against habitual linguistic or vocal expression. In tragic convention, such habitual vocalization takes the shape of the often terse, patriarchal voice of the Greek philosopher -- a didactic, conceptual container in opposition to the expressive “becoming” of Elektra’s cries that riot against fixity. As a tragic character, Elektra is radical and alien for Sophocles and his audience -- an ever-present conviction that demonstrates how female shame has constructed a life-size funeral urn around her.

Through translating a text within layers of translations, a fragmentation of the firsthand into traces, James K mirrors Elektra’s deconstruction of reality into siren shards, offering an experiencing of female sign language as a means of sabotage to the world of normal utterances. By sliding on the edge of convention to sharply abandoning rational speech and sonic construction, K’s piece aims to embody Elektra’s strained and stretching screams, as cuts against the glass; her sabotage bound within the blanket loop. In response to rigid vocalization and fixed sonic understandings, ELEKTRA (Scream Through the Eyes of a Statue) takes the scream as an unruly, emotive sonic experience projecting outwards into objects and audience: to the very bones of sound.

Börft enigma Crinan lays down 3 hours of screwed & deadly warehouse mixes recorded straight to tape between 1994 - 1996 and now issued for the first time, arcing from House and Acid to Techno and back, mixed fast and loose to fully impact bodies in motion. Split into 4 parts over 3 hours, Crinan characterises the sort of dancing gear that got Sweden’s underground scene moving in the mid ‘90s, during the formative stages of a label that would eventually find its own cult status in the years that followed. It’s a strong point of reference for Joachim Nordwall too, who has long been affiliated with the Börft label which issued Crinan’s pair of highly collectable Chi-skooled 12”s in 1998, and also exactly the sort of gear that was fuelling ‘floors from Manchester and Berlin back in the day.  On side A we hear him whip it tough and freaky with Dance Mania percolators and butterfly dancers, before side B loosens up and gets wilder with psychedelic acid and latinate, carnivalesque bangers. Side C sounds like exactly the sort of steely wallbuck tackle and rolling techno that would fuel the Brum lot (Regis & Surgeon et al) whilst side D chains up a fruitier carousel of peak time synths and strings built to drive his fellow Swedes to a frenzy. Zoe Efstathiou, pianist and electro-acoustic composer, originally from Greece, has lived in Sweden since 2015. Her interest shifts between the intricate relationships of the overtones of acoustic instruments, electro-acoustic textures, and the sonic potential of light installations. Her music interpolates the momentary with the ever-evolving, exploring ideas related to time, expectation and memory. There are connections to what is going on in the music of some of the 60s minimalists, where beauty and harshness meet naturally. This is Efstathiou’s debut solo album.

”In the core of the album’s creation, lies my fascination with unveiling the piano overtones by harnessing the properties of complex systems, which emerge when competing oscillations of strings interact with room acoustics, microphone placements, the piano's pedals, and its soundboard. On her third full-length album, C. Lavender delves into her
experience with a profoundly impactful Buddhist meditation
centered in the sacrifice of the self as a source of liberation.

“Rupture in The Eternal Realm” is a musical reinterpretation and
compendium to C. Lavender’s experience studying the Tibetan
Buddhist meditation practice known as chöd. The practice
traditionally involves musical instruments including drums
(ḍamaru), trumpets (kangling), bells and chanting. Rather than try
to recreate the practice's musical ritual, C. Lavender used it as a
point of departure for reflecting on her inner connection with the
meditation, one which she continued to dive into throughout the
pandemic. The song titles are taken from lines within the
traditional chöd chant, which is akin to a musical composition and
serves as a visualization guide throughout the meditative process.
“Rupture in The Eternal Realm” creates a new paradigm in the
grand tradition of women electronic music composers such as
Laurie Anderson, Éliane Radigue, and Pauline Oliveros connecting
forward-thinking music with Buddhist principals.

The album features recordings made on Buchla 200 synthesizer,
Haken Continuum, gongs, voice, brainwave modulating tones, EVI
and field recordings from the Karma Triyana Dharmachakra
Buddhist temple in Woodstock, NY.

Alice Kemp (b. 1972) uses themes as trance, dream and disturbance in her work. Kemp is moving freely between working with sound, performance, drawing, video, object making and installations. Kemp is based in the south of England.

Joke Lanz (b. 1965) is a unique sound and visual conceptual artist who lets his music collide with body art and performance. Lanz is connected to the Schimpfluch group and is based in Berlin.

Leif Elggren (b. 1950) is a self made king of KREV and is using painting, poetry, installations and composing as his main tools. He is no doubt one of the most important conceptual artists of today.

Joachim Nordwall (b. 1975) is running the iDEAL organisation and has his main interest in how electronic music can affect your mind. He started recording and experimenting in 1987.

John Duncan's "SAXMIX" is one massive piece of contemporary experimental music, which lets noise collide with free jazz and extreme minimalism. Duncan is a master when it comes to these things, and he is an artists constantly evolving, mutating and challenging. The sax thing then? JD has invited some of his fav sax players to collaborate with him; Mats Gustafsson, Antoine Chessex, Martin Escalante, Dror Feiler and Ulrich Krieger. Did I say MASSIVE? Well, it is.

Scheintot is a new trio consisting of Mats Gustafsson (sax/flute), Henrik Rylander (mixing desk) and myself on Korg MS20 which might be my fav synth ever, or right now at least. This is weird stuff. Not sure where this is going but I guess you will enjoy it if you are into stuff we have done before, but this sits comfortably in its own corner, not smart enough to be ashamed over sounding so infected.

Dischorealism was initially intended to be a conceptual work about ”milk” but we quickly got tired of the idea and the result was partly something completely different. Nevertheless, partly the same in the sense of sucking the life out of somebody, exploiting and over consuming trust in any form. Dischorealism explores the cost of dual nature and circulates around themes such as friendship, sex, violence and drug abuse.

Dischorealism is IMAGE and SOUND and a collaboration between Vanligt Folk and videoartist Tobias Toyberg. This is the SOUND part of the collaboration.

SATURN AND THE SUN

Joachim Nordwall and Henrik Rylander created Saturn and the Sun for their mutual passion in mindchanging sound experiments. Since 2005, they have created music together in ritual rock band The Skull Defekts, but since the death of the Skulls in April 2018 their common focus now is Saturn and the Sun. Deep, often monotonous and harsh electronic music inspired by 60s minimalism, early techno and tribal music. This is what you get when the two comes together. 

Rylander is working as a forensic photographer, makes extreme sound art and Nordwall runs the iDEAL Recordings label and records experimental music on his own and with artists like Mats Gustafsson, Mika Vainio (RIP), Ryan Martin and Leif Elggren. They both share the legendary studio space Gothenburg Sound Experiment.
