Deep Impact - Vol. 8 [-- ideal noise --]

My introduction to https://soundcloud.com/magisteriumbeats 's sound was by accident. One of his tracks popped up in the "More of What You Like" selection on SoundCloud a while back and it perked my ears.
After checking out his SC page, I realized the force behind it is none other than Antony O'Loughlin, the owner and curator of https://soundcloud.com/the-games-we-play and https://soundcloud.com/darkplayrecords who has been at the forefront of showcasing and promoting some of the best dark electronic music in recent years.

Honestly, the Magisteruim's sound took me some time to process. There were a lot of things happening on most tracks : spoken words, noise samples, scratches, static sounds, background ambient noise, etc. But somehow they were all fused together with a superb overlay of melodic vibes, soulful vocals, and super chill sprinkles of piano and cello. The clutter worked somehow but it needed some sifting through and patience for me. The more I listened, the clearer the storyline emerged in my mind and in my heart. 

This (so-called) mix is my own synthesis of his incredible body of work so far. I consider it nothing but a stitch-up job of a select few of https://soundcloud.com/magisteriumbeats tracks that have sunken deeper in my psyche than the rest. It is an attempt to pull together a collection of sound vignettes in hopes of creating a story, a memory ...a tribute.

To us, a mix is akin to a story.  The interpretation of said story is determined by its listener.  

As we arranged this piece, both Noctum’s and my tale blended in places and diverged in others.  As we poured more and more creative energy into the work, distinct, yet varied, peaks formed; as is common in a collaborative construction.  When we were finished, his story told a different tale than mine, and mine, different than Bijou's, and Bijou's different than yours.  We truly believe there are countless personal interpretations to this hour of music and we hope that each of you allow yourself to find your own.

Just felt like doing a stitched version of this incredible album by one of my fave ambient production teams. The idea for reshuffling and stitching the tracks into a long continuous mix originated from  Phaeleh's "Afterglo 0.01" release which was a pivot point for the way I viewed Dubstep genre about 6 years ago. It opened my mind and ears to works coming from unknown or not so well known producers from another world. So I thought this incredible release by Carbon Based Lifeforms deserves to be discovered within an overall context of its vibe rather than its individual tracks.... I hope you share the same view after giving it a spin.

Carbon Based Lifeforms - ALT:01 (Stitched by Ideal Noise)

A quick, fun project I worked on during the Holidays. It started as more of a playlist and next I knew it ended up being a +70 min. long mix.

I have been totally in awe of the amount of quality work coming out of Russia and East Europe lately in the past few years. Russians in particular have taken Future Garage (and all its sub branches) into heart and have elevated it to a level all their own. The likes of Nuage, Volor Flex, Delete, etc. are growing and thriving constantly to the point that to keep track of them it is more of a full time job. The idea for this mix was to share work of some of the newer, younger, less known talent coming from there to offer a sample of quality of work. Craset ( https://soundcloud.com/cra-set/ ) and https://soundcloud.com/sloati are two newer finds who have totally and consistently have surprised me recently so they are the main two producers featured throughout this mix.

This was a spare of the moment project. If it gets enough positive response, I may think about making it another mix series on its own. There is enough good work out there that I think the idea may have some legs to run.  Hope you like it. All comments and feedback are welcome.

- “I call it Lounge/ Chill electronica may be …but not Chillstep or Dubstep.”
- “You always use Future Garage tunes in your mixes and call it Chillstep.” 
- “Dude, how can you include heavy Bangers and still call this Chillstep?”

What can I say, I suffer from musical Schizophrenia. I tend to ignore categories and genres and only care for vibe and tempo. So again, here we have another mix that combines 3 different genres and sub-genres and comes up with a fusion that may or may not work. I hope you either hate it or love it. Just don’t be indifferent or neutral because it means I have failed in stirring something/ anything inside of you. Mediocrity and creativity are not meant to live side by side. 

The roster of producers/ DJ’s featured in this collection range from world renowned and big names to those who are creating some incredible work from a notebook computer and minimal studio set up at the corner of their tiny bedrooms. More than half way through making this mix, it started to sound "boring" and “expected” to me. It felt like I was rushing to meet a imaginary deadline. Around the same time, I had to listen to the first three of my mixes in this series for another thing I am working on. It’s been quite a while since I had listened to them from start to finish. I then realized how much I missed the deeper, darker tone evident in my earlier MIXES. That’s when I decided to trash the new mix and start all over again …..Hence, the main reason for the delay in getting it done.

Not much else to say except hoping that you’ll like the final result. As always, no attention is paid to how old, popular or how new and fresh a tune is – In another words : A mish mash as usual. Chillstep Works - Vol. 9 [2012]

"Imagine if Faithless did House music"
That was the much-needed wake-up call in form of a text from a friend that I needed to get off my lazy ass and get thinking about how I can dab back into mixing some of my favorite tunes once again.

This collab album between Dido, Rollo, and Sister of Bliss (of Faithless fame) has all the sunny dispositions of an unforgettable summer. It is a perfect example of an album that spells out a whole story in vivid colors and details for me. 12 tracks were carefully arranged to flow one after the other with the proper ebbs and flows with Dido's perfect vocals and spoken words sprinkled in between. However, having to divide it into 12 segments sounded more like a necessary evil than an artistic decision.

So, that's was my calling. This is not really a mix and I should get no credit for adding anything to this outstanding collection of tracks other than ridding the listener from hitting "Play" twelve different times. 

I hope my minuscule effort helps elevate the work to a slightly different level for those who appreciate a longer and uninterrupted journey than a single 3-5 minute track at a time. I even threw a couple of great remixed version of two tracks by Shadow Child and R Plus itself at the end so some don't feel totally cheated :)

So, here we are finally ... the last installment in the Chillstep Works series. To make this farewell edition special, this mix tries to represent the collective vibes of all previous nine. The "Chillstep" label came about as result of desperate search for a tag line to give a hint of what to expect if someone decides to give a +90 min. long mix a try but it never prevented me from stepping beyond its narrow and not so well defined confines. This last mix is no exception. From mellow ambient, to deep bass, vocal, melodic and banger dubstep to funky, emotive and dark Future and UK Garage sounds, these 30 tunes represent what always made this series popular and interesting to put together for me personally. And perhaps, that's why it took so long to finish this last one. It’s the longest mix I have ever done (or may try to do again) and at time, it was like pulling teeth. 

As it has been the norm, this installment represent an international roster of unknown, up and coming as well as, some quite well known artists, DJ's and producers also. Ranging from newcomers like Jafu, Luke Kay, Eocene Nine, Masa'an and KASIO ....to upwardly mobiles like Troy Gunner, Ficci, Minorstep, Detz, Neutralize, Delete, Tulpa/ Atlas ...to big names such as Bonobo, Modestep and Submotion Orchestra, this collection tries to showcase the vibes that have had a great impact on myself throughout making all the mixes in the series throughout 
the past 3 years. It's a 2 hour long mish mash again but I hope it works .... I recommend listening to it from start to end without interruption and on high volume.

At the end, I like to give a  huge Big Up to all the hard working DJ’s and producers out there who are always kind enough to send me dubs, demos and WIP’s … and always keep me ahead of the curve on what they are doing. If your work has not made it to this mix or previous ones, it does not mean I don't appreciate what you are doing or think it’s any less superior. I have limited time and resources but always try to do the best to help out as much as I can to put your work out there in front of my own followers and audience in hopes of getting it the exposure it deserves. So ….Keep doing what you love and you'll get the proper recognition and respect sooner or later.

Music is my therapy ...It all started with being mesmerized listening to the hypnotic beat of Kraftwerk’s “Trans Euro Express” on a tiny cassette player at a very young age and it continues to this day at an age when I have to worry about “more important” things in life.
