Rooted in those rare moments of tranquility throughout a parent’s life, Early Color is the auditory memoir of Griff through his time as a stay-at-home dad to a growing toddler making sense of the world. Conceptually, the album is laid out as a natural progression starting with the beautiful field recordings of ‘Zoom Deck’ and warm melody of ‘Hemmed’, both evoking visions of a hazy, forest morning, slowly waking up after night’s embrace. Shaking off the slumber, ‘Steel Wool’ provides an energetic start to the day as most children tend to do, to the dismay of some parents. Followed by the understated grooves of ‘Bubby & the Submersible’.

Approaching the second half of the album, ‘Trace Fossil’ and ‘Atoll’ kick things into gear with ear-worm-like melodies that build and build throughout into an emotional trip, while ‘FGH’ brings a more melancholic take. Capping off the string of four on the floor tracks is the growling ‘Why Yellow’, a more serious number that would fit well in many a dj set. Alighting from the burst of energy, we have the breakish beats of ‘Resnooze’, whose warm bass-lines and wide ranging synths envelop the listener. Finally arriving at the last track, the aptly named ‘Sitting Quietly Looking at Things’ is a musical combination of all that was prior. Emotive, textured, impactful, as the spoken word sampled lends such an air to the track.

Early Color’s artwork was also created by Griff, through a series of layered scans and is evocative of both his music, and the visual direction of Never Late. As a collection of personal moments, sounds, experiences will be key to future releases, as we strive to find the best expression of each artist that we work with.

For the second Far Blue release, Hame explores a deeper and organic style while keeping true to his hypnotising rhythms in an emotive context. The EP happens to be a selection of tracks that were made around critical turning points in the artist's life. "What's in a name?" asked Shakespeare a few centuries back. "That which we call a rose by any other word would smell as sweet," continued the poet. Well, when one listens to Birds Ov Paradise, the answer to old Willie's classic question is actually "Everything". It's rare to hear an artist with such clarity of vision and singularity of purpose; it's even more precious to have the artist's moniker almost define that vision. Pick any track from Birds ov Paradise and you'll hear birds in it. No, not a happy bird chirping in the background, but a litany of reverberated, occasionally rhythmic and occasionally chaotic percussive whispers, pokes, ticks and tacks, that indeed sound like a fluttering of wings. Sometimes those sounds resemble a flock of birds happily flying around a park on a sunny day; sometimes the birds are creating a menacing sense of tension straight out of Hitchcock, and sometimes the sounds channel somber darkness of ravens circling an old oak tree in a dark forest in the gray of twilight. "Wild Growth" leans towards the light rather than darkness. And with it's stronger sense of melodic purpose and benign ambiance, it sounds more like an early morning of what will turn out to be a sunny day, with minimalistic "birds" ambiance providing a sense ease and hope rather than gloom that's prevalent on many other tracks from the artist. It's another gem in the artist's library and clearly an original in a landscape overflowing with too many derivative producers.
