Dead Melodies presents us his new dark ambient noir album Murken Hollow

What actually happened that cold and misty November remained a mystery, but the cases were connected, that much was clear.

Ten murders across the city and a myriad of frankly surreal circumstances and evidence that made no sense. At each crime scene strange piles of singed black flakes surrounded a body laid out with no obvious cause of death. Nearby mirrors cast no reflection and looked like endless black pools of nothingness that almost hurt to look into. And in the pocket of each victim, a cryptic letter with inverted writing and a ticket stub from the sleepy town of Murken Hollow.

The detective poured the last dregs of a bottle into a coffee mug while drawing on a cigarette, a permanent look of despair wrinkled his brow. The dingy office was smoky and dark, half lit from the street lights beyond the frosted windows so the shadows hung long and moved with the traffic. On the wall an elaborate pin board littered in string and polaroids in an attempt to make sense of it all, but with no prints or sign of intruders the distant town of Murken Hollow was the only possible lead.

And then from under a pile of papers on the messy desk, the phone rang... Another murder.

This sample reminded me a bit of the keys sampled in Deja Vu by Nas. It has that heavy weight to the sound if that makes sense. If you haven't heard the OG I highly recommend it: Deja Vu is such a classic track, crazy it was never officially released (although Nas did use the first verse on Verbal Intercourse), but the whole vibe of the OG version has always been so dope to me, really ahead of its time too. Anyway I thought this beat had that nostalgic vibe on point: also dope to drop it this time of year cause I think it fits that winter/xmas vibe well. Peace

Hey all, here is my first new song of 2015.

This is a strange one to kick things off. It falls under the category of what I describe as ‘fever dream’ music.

“The God In Me Just Evaporated” is a strange mix of blues, electro, disco, post punk and maybe a bit of ambient for good measure. It came about pretty organically as bits and pieces started to merge together to form a picture.

The song was inspired by my home country of Australia. I don’t often write about Australia as everywhere else always seems a lot more exciting to me – you know, the grass is always greener. Anyway, what you quickly discover about Australia is that once you leave civilization (i.e. Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane etc) and venture into the outback it can become a pretty terrifying place. If something can bite you, poison you, eat you, break you or generally scare the hell out of you it resides down under. Make no mistake, Australia is unforgiving. 

Importantly, there is a real sense of isolation in the Australian outback. I’ve been around and to me it is different to any other desert or landscape anywhere in the world. It is alien. It feels like nothing has ever existed out there. It feels like a land before time. I’ve heard someone describe as being older than God.

With that in mind, I was also inspired by the brilliant 2005 John Hillcoat film ‘The Proposition’ and its idea that God does not exist in the outback – that the land sucks any belief out of you (i.e. the God in me just evaporated). I actually sampled the film. You can hear Guy Pearce and the beyond incredible John Hurt conversing. I tried to write lyrics that reflect the feeling of their conversation.  I don’t know... You’ll get the idea. It is more about mood.

I think the music does a good job communicating vastness. I also give my old Guild 12 string a workout which I haven’t used in a while. Think I’ll end up using it a lot more this year.
