Hollow Life

This was Idiot Plot's first and only "official" album.

The band formed in mid-December 2002, when Matt Taylor and Ryan Dannar, who knew each other from the Tulsa tech-support call-center where they worked, got together to jam one Saturday night.  The next week or roundabout, they were joined by another friend from work, drummer Ben Munkholm.  A week or so after that, Ben's buddy Josh Whitley joined-in on bass.

We quickly worked-up a number of originals.  Some of these developed from jams (Suncatcher, Swallow You Entire), and some were developed from material that either Ryan or Matt had recently written themselves (Technician In Hell was a Matt song; Two Grudges and In Absence were Ryan songs).

We started recording this album on February 1, 2003, in Matt Taylor's living-room, with assistance from our friend Andy Jenson, using his Roland VSR-880 digital-recorder.  We tracked all of Ben's drums for the album that night, and then recorded the other parts over the next few months.  Josh's bass parts and Ryan's guitar parts were recorded at Ryan's house, directly into his computer.  Matt recorded his guitar-parts at his own house, using his own computer.  Vocals were done at Ryan's place.  And then, Ryan mixed and mastered everything.

Ryan compiled the artwork from close-up photos of his TV, a drawing made by his brother, and a photo of Josh handing a cigarette to a statue of Jesus on the ORU campus.  Matt screen-printed the words "Idiot Plot," in red, on a lot of blank CD's.  Ryan burned the content to the CD's after the ink had dried.  Our friend Jo Foster printed-up all the artwork at the local print-shop where she worked.

Ryan hand-numbered each copy that we made; there'a sticker on the cover, as well as one under the CD-tray, identifying what "number" the album is, out of "150," which was the total maximum number of these discs we thought we might ever possibly make.  All told, we only ever actually made the initial run of 50.

We officially released the "Technical Difficulty EP" at a well-attended show at Tulsa's Deadtown Tavern on March 13, 2004.  We played with our friends The Engine Hearts, a band for whom Jo Foster played drums.

We had hoped to follow this EP up with a longer, more "proper" album, but that never happened.  We had a few personnel changes, and then Idiot Plot disbanded sometime in 2005.

01 Suncatcher

Idiot Plot was a rock band based out of Tulsa, Oklahoma.  We formed in mid-December 2002, and officially disbanded in 2005.  We released one official album, "Technical Difficulty EP," in March of 2003.

Founding members included Matt Taylor and Ryan Dannar (both played guitar and sang), Ben Munkholm (drums), and Joshua Whitley (bass).  Later members included Zach Dodson (bass), and Noam Faingold (bass).

Idiot Plot is a "dead project," but we made some good music together, and I started this Soundcloud account in an effort to share some of it.  It felt like a shame letting that CD and those rehearsal cassettes gather dust in my closet, especially when so few people had ever heard this stuff.
