I first became familiar with Kuhn's work through the label he started with Paul Jones and Sam Obey--who he is now the main owner of-Astro Nautico. I was living in Brooklyn at the time and stumbled across their parties and record label. The label caught my attention because the releases coming out of it were very eclectic, multigenre and modern, which was a departure from my hyper focus on House, Nu Disco and Techno at the time. I went to a few of their parties and particularly loved live performances from Photay, Sam Obey and Time Wharp (who would soon blow up years later). I even got to DJ with Sam Obey, Kuhn and Photay at an amazing party at Trans Pecos, which still remains one of my favorite Brooklyn experiences of all time. 

When I moved back to Philly, shortly after Paul Jones and Bennett also moved to the City of Brotherly Love. Though I am originally Philly, so the move wasn't so novel, I felt inclined to welcome Paul and Bennett to the city in open arms, as I knew they would do great things to bring creativity and culture to Philadelphia. Bennett attended the infamous Joe Nice / Normaling / Lamin Fofana Ancient Puzzle Arts party at the Dolphin pre pandemic and we have been mutually supportive of our creativity over the years.

I've been wanting to get Kuhn on the APA mix series for quite some time, but I wanted to build up the audience first before getting him on. Now that the post pandemic APA regulars have been supporting the podcast on a regular basis, I thought it would be an excellent time to highlight Kuhn's work lately. One such live event was an incredible Astro Nautico show in Bartram's Garden they threw featuring a then lesser known Kilamanzego (who then blew up....notice a trend?) 

Not only has Astro Nautico as a label been thriving, but I particularly wanted to highlight Kuhn's incredible work hosting a weekly live music performance art installation in Clark Park in Philadelphia in support of those suffering in Palestine. One of the performances can be heard on the Astro Nautico bandcamp ( https://astronautico.bandcamp.com/album/image-of-the-sum-palestine-vigil-10-31-23 ). The weekly vigil calls attention to those still suffering in Palestine and how we must call for our government and world citizens to demand a ceasefire. Kuhn's work with the weekly vigil is one of the most unifying pieces of art in Philadelphia I have come across, so now more than ever, it's especially an important time to highlight Kuhn's sociopolitical work through art and music.

The mix is warm in fidelity and saturation. It's eclectic and modern just like the Astro Nautico label. Ancient Puzzle Arts Podcast #36: Kuhn's (Astro Nautico) Steadfast Cassette Selection

I can't remember the exact first time I met Squidbrain--it was pre pandemic 2010s in Philly so I was wilin'--but I do distinctly remember a great time hanging out at a pier party rave on Columbus Blvd in Philadelphia and loved his vibe. We stayed in touch over the years. I particularly loved his knack for digging for quality but obscure music and quirky sense of humor.

It took until 2023 when I visited him in Berlin, Germany, his residence for a while now, did we really get to kick it for a while. Wearing a bucket hat at a bougy Berlin bistro, it was great to see he still kept the Philly funk in Berlin. We caught up on old times...I learned some unique things about being a Berlin resident and that he's still staying creative with music. It's always refreshing to hang out with a long time club friend in the daytime.

To my surprise, he had been keeping up with the Ancient Puzzle Arts podcast abroad and wanted to contribute a mix. Of course I agreed, not knowing what to expect. In typical form, Squidbrain provided a very unique selection of global underground dance music where the entire mix is comprised of people he personally knows. The mix is quite eclectic but somehow sounds cohesive and very modern. It's cool to hear Squidbrain is staying connected and supportive of his talented friends and able to bring a global perspective to the mix series.

Ancient Puzzle Arts Podcast #37: Squidbrain's Hello On the Street Selection

Squidbrain's latest release is a forthright and bass-fevered club jaunt with catchy vocal chop-ups, adventurous sound design and maximum floor crushability.

"What I Want" is a slamming bmore track with bass that'll make you dumber, crisp drum breaks that'll make you smarter again, and funky synths and vocals that will wiggle your mom's wig right off.  The track's strengths are in the beefed up kick, highly recognizable 90s vocal interpolations and fast-paced energy changes.

"Cattivaragazza" shows the indelible influence of Chicago footwork and rings with 90s staples like ravey pads, G-funk leads, and a foreigner that sounds like Fran Drescher.  All of these conspire in a torrent of frenetic percussion to blow the club up like the giant blue laser that blew up the stripper on top of the skyscraper in Independence Day.

About the Artist
Channeling the grit and power of east coast club music to Berlin, Philadelphia native Squidbrain is a restless and unpredictable producer.  Squidbrain’s resume of DJ appearances and dance music productions spans many aliases and incarnations that date back to 2011.  In recent years his work coalesced into hard-hitting club releases that vary in style but are resolute in delivering off-kilter dance tracks that are dark, gritty, and fun.  Squidbrain draws inspiration from disparate sources ranging from Container, Kate Bush, DJ Rashad, to the depths of the internet and non-music media, giving his tracks an unconventional edge.  With the strong Späti Creatures EP released on UKG heavyweight Stone Taro’s label NC4K, and garnering support on FJAAK’s Spandau20 podcast series, Rinse FM, Munich’s Radio 80000, and Beatport’s Link series among others, Squidbrain’s music has thrived in the underground for years. This track, "Levo", starts off with distorted guitar-like sounds and
dissonant mystical melodies. As the track develops, it gets heavier and builds energy before bursting open with striking melodies and chopped-up vocals.
