Recording of a Sexuality, Poverty and Law seminar on Thursday 7 May 2015 at the Institute of Development Studies
 
As part of the Researching Sex and Sexualities Conference (a Centre for Gender Studies event, Sussex University), the IDS Sexuality, Poverty and Law Programme welcomed scholars from Universities across China to share ongoing research on the changing landscape of sexuality, gender and sexual rights activism in China. Speakers explored core contemporary issues, including: the impact of demographic changes on men and the family; new approaches to sex education in schools; the experiences of LGBT youth; and China’s emerging sexual rights movement.
 
The seminar was chaired by Polly Haste from the IDS Sexuality, Poverty and Law Programme, and presentations was followed by a Q&A.

Is China building an empire in rural Africa? China has nine percent of the world's arable land, six percent of its water, and over 20 percent of its people. Africa's savannahs and river basins host expanses of underutilized land and water. Some believe that China is buying up African land to grow food to ship back home.

Professor Deborah Bräutigam discusses her new book, "Will Africa Feed China", which challenges conventional wisdom and finds that Chinese farming investments and land acquisitions are surprisingly limited. China exports more food to Africa than it imports.. And, currently facing a food deficit, how will Africa feed its own population? Does China have a role to play in this?
