Chaos in the CBD

Amadeus sees it’s catalog graced yet again by New Zealand outfit Chaos In The CBD. The kiwi brothers, birthed Ben & Louis Helliker-Hales, are no new faces to the label, or the wide variety of genre-bending acronyms they encompass. Having recently relocated from tropical Auckland to damp London earlier this year, the two take their productions along with them in their latest efforts, 816 To Nunhead.

Title track and aside, “816 To Nunhead,” is tinged with what’s left of summer. A nostalgic tune built for the sun and soaked in funk. It’s a track reminiscent of early french disco, almost as if built for the two robots themselves. Guitar plucks and hi hats flow seamlessly throughout the tune, aided by a glorifying vocal, “I would like to think of my music as just an extension, an extension of me of today or whatever.”

What emotion of freedom and escape evoked on the Aside can be contrasted on the flip, “78 To Stanley Bay,” a tune built behind the ever looming theme of loneliness. Accompanied by a live trumpet courtesy of Isaac Aesili, ’78 To Stanley Bay’ tells us a story, or rather a journey, built behind dirty hats and delayed keys. This is a track fashioned for everywhere but the club, and we absolutely love that.

Kicking things off with a release from Chaos In The CBD, ‘Accidental Meetings’ is a record that celebrates this way of living. The four cuts effortlessly move you through a journey of delicate textures and atmospheres. It begins with the late night basement sounds of the title track, then sends you through the spacious and meditative ‘North Pole Cafe.’ The wild rhythms of ‘United Identities’ hypnotise you, until you find yourself spat out by the energetic grooves of ‘Distorted Fields.’

Play it in the club, play it in the hotbox, or play it for your mum, this record is filled with soulful, rhythmically complex, melancholic music that is unmistakably dusty.

The unsigned series continues with the fifth installment of producers we dig that are looking to find a home for their music. We've been checking in with some of the producers who have graced the series thus far to see if there are any updates. Both they and we are super happy about the reception that our unsigned series has received and the comments about the music (both public and private) have been overwhelmingly positive. There have been a few minor inquiries made to the artists so far, but we want to further encourage our label and artist friends to get in touch with them if you're liking what you're hearing and hopefully sign some of their yet unheard productions!

TOOLI

Hello there, I’m Tobias. For the past 7 years I've been working with a bunch of labels, probably 
most known is Local Talk and since 2014 Omena - a label that managed to 
release a single sided 12" with a disco loop as it's first release. I 
also from time to time enjoy playing music in various establishments but 
these days I try to spend a bit more time in a studio finishing tracks 
that might end up on a label or remixing a track that won't be refused. 
I do a few other things to but since this is music related you're more 
than welcome to email me and I can talk about that in private.

So, this track I decided to send to Bolting Bits is something I did a 
while back. It started out as a remix but sometimes things do happen 
when you work on tracks and the end result is quite far from what you 
had in mind first. There's not one single note, sound or sample from the 
original I was going to remix, nor did it sound like it either.
When I make music there's never a specific theme or genre I decide I 
want to work with, I just start off by playing around with a synth and 
add a few things as I go along. Yes there's producers and groups I 
admire but I never intend to sound like them or make a track like them.

For this track I decided to make a very basic beat, played a few notes 
that ended up being the bass line and added two chords. Then I found a 
sound called "Flute" while browsing lead sounds - I knew I had to pick 
that. The rest is added as I was playing and the only sample used is 
some birds and background noise from a walk I did to the studio. That is 
pretty much the track.

UNSIGNED 005: Tooli - Second Time Around (Sunrise Mix)

Bike Thieves are back. On last year's celebrated "Laura EP", the Stockholm duo plunged into the sounds of classic garage and deep house. On "Catherina EP", Erik and Daniel move in a slightly different direction. An explosive blend of afro grooves, tribal vocals and deep kicks and basslines, "Catherina EP" lets the rhythmic frenzy of Fela Kuti encounter modern house music. The record also features @Saine, one of Finland’s finest underground producers.

On the title track of "Catherina EP", Bike Thieves offer a mysterious deep house burner which slowly builds up around punchy congas, sweeping pads and female chants. This is the true story of a fearless woman who climbed the mountains of Mali without any safety equipment.

Firmin returns for a difficult second album but thankfully he has pulled it off with two progressive and infectious originals and a delicious remix. Drenched & Coppered combines chug with straight up house to lovely effect. The Mirror, Then Blinked patiently builds itself up before an euphoric flourish at the end. Then Carlo finishes things off with a superb roller of the title track. All in we have three club tracks to keep you satisfied this summer.

Australia based Canadian, A Most Wanted Man is up next for Flat White, with the Leicester label sticking to their mould of supporting lesser known/upcoming artists. They've wangled legend Jacques Renault in for a remix who has done his usual masterful re-touching. Trimming the fat so to speak and running it through his NYC filter to give it that tasty, gritty edge.

SB PREMIERE: A Most Wanted Man - Meander On Carlisle (Jacques Renault Remix) [Flat White Records]

As steward of seminal nineties Aussie house label Red Ember, Ewan Jansen could be seen as an unwitting forebear of the countries now robust house music scene. Returning in 2016 with fresh solo material, Ewan caught the eye of Jimpster whom offered to release an EP on his eminent Freerange imprint. The ‘Perfect Strangers’ EP consists of four slick, organic house cuts that showcase Ewan’s impeccable attention to detail in the grooves and production. Here we spotlight ‘Chika Kozo’, a rolling groove not unlike a classic Kerri Chandler jam; warm organ stabs set the tone over a bumping bass riff. Subtle keys flutter atop a tight shuffling rhythm track and a bell melody elevates the vibe. It’s a collection of tracks with roots in house music’s golden period while  pertaining a modern sheen for today’s dancefloors, all skilfully crafted by a master of his art.

Musical duo and Cause residents, Faceless, release their debut EP. A soulful disco house mix inspired by the warehouse events that the pair have been involved with over the last few years. The highlight track 'Enjoyable to Do' brings new life to Bobby Thurston’s 80s release 'Check Out the Groove'. Full of energy, groove and soul this is a great example of what to expect on the floor when these two are at the helm.
