Somov Records head Ignez is up next with an unmissable techno number that’ll make you sweat. A younger self dropped the stuffy confines of his childhood on the Dutch coast and fled to Berlin as so many do, and there began to cultivate a sound that has placed him firmly among some of his talented and much talked about peers. The DJ/producer credits the seaside upbringing with instilling a deep respect for the rolling tides and endless sands, natural references that are deeply embodied in his hypnotising and immersive rhythms. His occasional return to home turf as resident of Amsterdam-based party series Eerste Communie has also played a significant role in his musical development and found him willing publishers in the likes of Token and SK_eleven, as well as a sparring partner in Berlin heavyweight Rødhåd (with whom he shares two EPs). It’s techno in purest form, bewitching loops that pulsate like those long ago shores. In that sound his ascetic beats are flanked by the most minimal detail and rely on raw percussive might to mesmerise his listener. A dancefloor portal to another world; transcendent stuff for sure. From small club settings to festivals on a larger scale Ignez brings a kind of magic that’s hard to turn a deaf ear to, Bassiani Podcast 220’s proof that he’ll pull those tricks at home too. A hour of virgin, mechanical beats that daze and enthral, a staunch reminder of techno’s visceral power and of why, for so many, it’s such a ruling passion.

A much (duly) rated exponent of the Dutch techno sound within and well beyond its borders, Eerste Communie co-founder and resident MARRØN clocks in with a vibrant two-hour trip into his constantly minimal, yet untiringly expansive imaginarium. Through a chiselled selection of cuts both surgical and eerie - combining the haunting nature of deep, texturally lavish dubs with that of clinically arranged dance floor-destroyers, he has us swaying in a state of spooky stasis, zoning out further and further into trance-like abandon as the groove etches deeper. Boasting a signature both paced-up and uncompromisingly stripped down to its atomic nucleus, MARRØN serves up a masterly crafted piece of soul-searching engineering.

To kick off the year, I’m excited to share my set recorded in August 2024 for the incredible Unfold party at @foldldn!

From the moment I stepped into the club, I was instantly embraced by its electric and welcoming vibe. The venue itself is mind-blowing, and the sound system brought the music to life in a way that was unreal.

What really made the night special was the inclusive, beautiful queer energy throughout the space. It was a true safe haven, where everyone could fully express themselves. Such a cool evening! ❤️

BASEMENT introduces BASEMENT Archives, a new podcast series highlighting standout sets recorded live in the club. 

First up is the impromptu b2b2b2b from Fadi Mohem, Kancheli, NDRX and Philippa Pacho that closed out last April’s Bassiani takeover. If you were there, you know how special this night was. Ten minutes before we planned to wrap the night, it was decided that the music simply could not stop. The four artists took over the booth in BASEMENT, and what resulted was 3 hours of euphoric techno that sent everyone out on an incredible high. These are moments that can’t be planned, curated or recreated. When they happen, you pray the recorder is on and running. Thank god it was.

Embark on a sonic pilgrimage into the very heart of a forgotten world. 🚇 Deep within the earth's metallic womb, where concrete gives way to endless, arching conduits of steel and wire, a lone figure stands as the silent sentinel of a future foretold. This is the world of "Subterranean Oracle," a place where the air itself thrums with a low, electric hum—a constant, driving beat that is the planet's own techno heartbeat. 🤖 The figure, cloaked in heavy, dark robes that fall like stone, is a vessel of secrets. Its face is a smooth, featureless void, a blank canvas onto which we project our own anxieties and hopes for what is to come. Is it a priest of a new technological age? An AI entity that has shed its need for human features? Or the last organic being in a world of machines? The ambiguity is the source of its power, a silent prophet in a deafeningly loud world. ⛓️

The environment is a cathedral of industry, a dystopian marvel. Rows of spherical machines, like dormant metallic eyes or gargantuan eggs waiting to hatch, line the tunnel. They are interconnected by a chaotic yet purposeful web of thick black cables, arteries pumping data and raw energy through this subterranean network. 💡 The ground is dust and grit, the only remnant of a natural world long since paved over and forgotten. The sepia-toned light is dim, suggesting a source that is neither sun nor moon, but the cold, artificial glow of the machinery itself. This is the visual landscape that our music inhabits; each track is a step deeper into this tunnel, a new revelation from the oracle. The driving 4/4 kick drums are the relentless march of progress, the raw, distorted basslines are the groans of stressed metal, and the hypnotic, looping synths are the coded messages humming through the wires. 👁️‍🗨️

By not taking usual paths and knowing his inner self, it all felt natural for Ignez to devote more of his life to electronic music. His roots are in between dust of sand and waves of salt water. Ignez grew up near the coast of The Netherlands where hypnotizing waves and infinitive dunes shaped his sound. He fled the conservative world by sketching his own reality with these elements of nature. This became inextricably linked within his consciousness and reflects back into his music today, bringing a tight yet indefinable techno sound. 

He has shaped his own path through his imprint, Somov Records, where he unveiled his distinctive sound and artistic vision for the first time. In addition to his own imprint, he has made an indelible impact on influential labels such as Token and SK_eleven, enchanting audiences worldwide with mesmerizing releases. Notably, Ignez has collaborated with Rødhåd. Together, they have created two EPs that showcase their unique musical synergy. 

In his DJ sets, Ignez transports the audience into a mesmerizing sonic journey, captivating their senses and lifting the dancefloor to a higher state of being and a collective oceanic feeling. His driving, hypnotic, and minimalistic approach pulls listeners into a magnetic trance, where the pulsating rhythms and ethereal melodies create an immersive sonic experience.
