Dispatch Dubplate continues its long-awaited return with the second of six new releases, brought to you by Quartz. Championing the best in unreleased music and prominent dubs from within the dnb scene, Dispatch Dubplate 19 is no exception.

Forming the centrepiece of this release is the track “Brass Knuckles” with the instrumental edit taking that special place of vinyl exclusive – never to be sold digitally.

Immediately impressed by this heavily percussive and bongo-led track, Ant TC1 built an instant love for the tune. With an early test version getting impressive crowd reactions in his sets and then seeing it get the same kind of response in Mantra’s Keep Hush stream in 2018, he knew “Brass Knuckles” would make for the perfect Dispatch Dubplate release. Reworked in 2022, we’re hyped to finally get this one out there.

Alongside the vocal edit featuring Patwan’s impressive and distinctive vocals, Quartz flexes his tech roots for another four standout tracks that each pack a special punch. Full of funk and dynamic impact, expect to hear these on heavy rotation.

Dispatch Dubplate continues to celebrate the best in unreleased dubs and in-demand tracks from the world of drum and bass with the next edition of this prestigious series, brought to you by Zero T and Black Barrel. Fans of the label will be familiar with these two label favourites, both responsible for several classic album releases for Dispatch and countless well-received EPs.

Leading the release is the VIP of “Sonic Bionic” from Zero T. The original has been in heavy rotation since release in 2021, and this VIP has been a secret weapon in Zero T’s sets of late. When Ant TC1 suggested a VIP treatment for this track, Zero T decided to take the vibe back a couple of years from the original’s nod to the Full Cycle sound of 1998, to a more ’96 vibe. A classic stripped-back Sandman break and a call-and-response bassline, are joined by a halftime intro and breakdown, for a further nod to the dark Wu-Tang-style hip-hop influences of the original.

The DLR Remix of Black Barrel’s “Fabric” makes up the next track in this split release. The original from 2019 will be well known to many. This DLR Remix adds that trademark funk to this classic roller.

Completing the digital release is an incredible collab from both artists, a soulful vocal leads “Deep Inside” as Zero T and Black Barrel flex their liquid credentials. Building on Black Barrel’s original melody with techno-influenced, looped-out vibes – deep by name, deep by nature.

The vinyl exclusive track for the limited edition heavyweight release is Black Barrel’s own VIP of “Fabric”. Another secret weapon, this rework includes added weight and intensity – building on the original’s glitched funk.

With numerous solo releases and their previous collaboration on the “Most Violent Year” album series, NC-17 and Dauntless will be well known to fans of Dispatch. When we were approached with new collaborative material, the “Short Cuts” project was born.

Drawing on 2000s-era DnB influences, they set out to create something tech-influenced whilst maintaining musicality and that much-needed funk. The pair found a unique creative flow that allowed their styles to gel and enhance each other’s productions.

Dauntless and NC-17 channelled the energy of those early days into an energetic and future-thinking album, citing many legends of that prolific era of drum and bass as influences. Benefitting from a modern approach to mixdown and structure, the resulting album is a varied and multi-layered representation of their shared artistic vision.

“Closure”, featuring the talents of London-based singer-songwriter Pepper, weaves haunting melodies with ethereal jazz-soaked vocals for a slick liquid roller with lush bass and driving twostep.

“The Skies Above” made its debut on BBC 1’s Drum & Bass show in early 2023, with Sweetpea giving this tune its first airing. Atmospheric and immersive, with progressive drum work that guides the listener through rolling clouds and breaking light, filtered echoes of sun are met with deep bass and rolling snares.

Brazilian producer Dizrupt may be a new name to some but has been making waves in the dnb scene for several years now. In this short time has seen support from Noisia, Bryan G, Dj Andy and countless other big names with his self-released music and releases on Odio Records and Fraktal Sound.

The title track from this EP was featured on Noisia’s Vision radio in early 2021, and forms the basis of this varied and impressive debut release for Dispatch. It was written on his Epiphone SG, using analogue effects and distortion to make the guitar sound like a synthesiser. A unique, experimental track with bags of atmosphere and progressive depth.

Fusing organic sounds and field recordings with synthesised sounds throughout the EP, Dizrupt delivers an incredible mix of rolling energy with technical and experimental production techniques.

Brass Knuckles (feat. Patwan)

After a background in traditional piano training and progression onto the electronic organ during childhood, I got my first 16-bit computer aged 13 in the form of the Commodore Amiga 500.
Somebody gave me copies of Soundtracker software and the ST range of sample disks, and along with my best friend, we began making our own tunes. Then along came MED Sound Studio and we started really getting to grips with producing using just the Amiga and simple keyboards.

As our output grew and the next few years unfurled, so we created first Q-P-I Music (Quadrosonix Productions Inc), 'Headlong Recordings', and finally 'Unborn Records', all basically label names for our growing output of experimental, late 80's/early 90's rave-influenced tunes. I became CJ Shadow, making hardcore, techno and jungle style tracks, while CJ Trinity made remixes of more commercial sounding tunes like that of The Prodigy and laid-back house/techno stuff, and developed a more general electronica-like, ambient, trance-style sound.

By the time we left school in 1992, aged 16, we had produced well over twenty C90 cassette albums of material. The next year or so saw investment in our kit as we upgraded to Amiga 1200 computers, better synths, and for the first time the introduction of simple mixers and decent monitor speakers. The quantity of our output certainly reduced, but the quality significantly increased.

Though our paths in life diverged significantly at aged 17, we continued to produce an evolving sound, improving and honing our individual styles and incorporating our personal influences as jobs and money allowed investment in better software and hardware. By the time the internet was a thing and even before ADSL (broadband) I was releasing the best of our music on unsigned music websites like MP3.com. Uploading several hours of music on a dial-up connection, now that was fun :)

By the turn of the millenium we had our own website, unbornrecords.net, and ran it as our label and home online to promote our music. CJ Trinity's material was by now very much in the house/trance and dance remix genres, whilst mine was definitively a breakbeat-driven, jungle and drum&amp;bass sound, reflecting the scene I was busy raving in every weekend, and immersed in fanatically. We sold a few CD albums, got quite a lot of downloads and generally enjoyed what we did, but life got in the way of it ever becoming more than a hobby.

Though our music continued to increase in quality and get some serious attention from a few people in the right places, sadly by 2005 we both had so much going on in our separate lives and so little time for music production that the website fizzled out, and along with the demise of several of the unsigned artist sites we had our material on, our music basically fell off the edge of a cliff. CJ Trinity's unfinished but astonishingly good final album, 'Atmospheric Hi Trip', really showed how far and complete his particular dance sound had come. My last CJ Shadow album, entitled 'Kitchen For No Reason', was completed that year and actually reflects how complete and professional my DnB-based sound was becoming. Even today, everyone who hears it seems to agree that it truly is a crying shame that I never continued making music.

Since 2005 I remain infatuated with the Drum & Bass scene, keeping up with the massive online output and trends, going out whenever possible to the dances and just loving everything I'm hearing and seeing. Recent months have seen me going through the old hard drives, listening to our old music, and a dawning realisation that I cannot allow this part of my life to die. And having now stumbled on a folder of projects and work from 2005 that basically constitutes what would have been my next album, I have decided to plug myself back into production.

2025 sees the 20th anniversary of the release of Kitchen For No Reason. I can confirm that a new LP is on its way, produced under my new Ignomius Darka moniker.
