Throughout her practice, Zadie Xa uses water and marine ecologies as metaphors for exploring the unknown, whilst also alluding to abstract notions of homeland. Xa was born and raised in Vancouver on the unceded territories of Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh peoples, and is now based in London, UK. Her work is informed by her experiences within the Korean diaspora, as well as the environmental and cultural context of the Pacific Northwest. Her work often features garments, including cloaks and masks, used for live performance and within installation or moving image.

Riar Rizaldi works as an artist, filmmaker and amateur researcher. Born in Indonesia and currently based in Hong Kong. His main focus is on the relationship between capital and technology, extractivism, and theoretical fiction. His works have been shown at Locarno Film Festival, BFI Southbank London, International Film Festival Rotterdam, NTT InterCommunication Center Tokyo, Centre Pompidou Paris, Times Museum Guangzhou, and National Gallery of Indonesia amongst others.

Liturgy is a journey into the uncanny realm of the senses that dives into histories of perception and intuition. Divining inspiration from meditation, oracles, curses, hexagrams, Cantonese traditions, and superstitions, Flora Yin-Wong interweaves textual and visual collage to create a multi-layered tonality exploring issues related to cosmic principles, conspiracies, and parallel universes. The book’s chapters—Rituals & Fire; Omens; Hexagrams / Oracles; Curses; Gods & Creatures; Places Doors to Hell / Ghost Cities; Paradoxes; Sound Phenomena; Reality—form a constellatory work filled with religion, dreams, and fragmented memories and knowledge that also gestures at the artist’s own history. Reflected here is the multidisciplinary artist’s interest in the web between fiction, memory, rituals, and incantation, as well as her approach to sound.

Riar Rizaldi: Liturgy Mix

On 25 September 2021, Chuquimamani-Condori (Elysia Crampton Chuquimia)gave a performance lecture at Auto Italia on the occasion of Amaru’s Tongue: Daughter, the first international solo exhibition by US-based artists Chuquimamani-Condori (Elysia Crampton Chuquimia) and Joshua Chuquimia Crampton. 

In this event, Chuquimamani-Condori shared research on embodied cultural heritage that informed the creation of her new moving image work Amaru’s Tongue: Daughter, and explored ideas of memory repression through a range of archival materials drawn from Aymaran histories and cultures, as well as research from neuroscientists Cristina Alberini and Mark Solms.

Amaru’s Tongue: Daughter is the first international solo exhibition by US-based artists Chuquimamani-Condori (Elysia Crampton Chuquimia) and Joshua Chuquimia Crampton, a newly commissioned moving image, in which the artists, who are members of the Pakaxa Aymara nation, enact a ceremony for their grandmother and explore their family’s rituals around death. Underpinned by the nation’s abolitionist traditions as inseparable from the Black radical tradition, this project attests to different spacetimes and ways of imagining as ‘abolition geographies’ (Ruthie Gilmore Wilson, 2017).

Chuquimamani-Condori is an Aymara multidisciplinary artist and musician. Under the moniker Elysia Crampton, Chuquimamani-Condori has released multiple critically acclaimed records, including her most recent LP ORCORARA 2010 (2020). Recent presentations include the Biennale of the Moving Image at Centre D’Art Contemporain in Geneva (2018) and LUMA Westbau in Zürich (2018). Her first book Amarupachankiri (2020) was published with Puro Fantasia.

Forest Dreaming is a yoga nidra practice. Also known as yogic or contemplative sleep, yoga nidra supports active rest and conscious relaxation. Yoga nidra is a liminal state of consciousness between wakefulness and sleep that offers the opportunity to awaken and, at the same time, to dream. 

In Forest Dreaming, you will experience a guided yoga nidra meditation that explores the connections between language, ecology, and consciousness. It will take place lying down, so ensure you are dressed warmly and comfortably, with any bolsters, eye pillows, or blankets you may wish to use to support you so that you can remain still for the duration of the practice. 

You will be invited to form a sankalpa: a seed of heartfelt intention or resolve to sow in your mind during the practice. A sankalpa is a short sentence or phrase that speaks of an intention formed in the heart to create a change or an intention for your practice. It could be a statement about your nature or your purpose. Phrase it as a positive declaration or affirmation. The sankalpa does not take root in the thinking, intellectual mind; instead, try to hear your sankalpa as it comes to you. 

Through practice, every circumstance can become an occasion for awakening to the imbricated and simultaneous nature of realities whose connection is profound but often obscure to the ‘ordinary’ conscious mind that overlays what ‘is’ with concepts and beliefs. Here, you may find something of the wild profusion of meaning emanating from the enigmatic interstices of our lives, refracted into a seed and containing, to paraphrase Donna Haraway, a history of practices inside its coat.

Practice 1: Forest Dreaming by Sarah Shin

Hypnosis is a practice of entering a trance-like state in which the mind is deeply suggestible. Departing from the analytical mind in order to reach the parasympathetic realm of healing, the hypnotized subject can access deeply ingrained patterns that lurk below the level of conscious awareness to provide an opening for meditative communication with the deepest levels of the self. 

This guided hypnosis is best listened to on headphones and in a comfortable and warm environment. At the point of deepest hypnotic submersion, you will be invited to plant a seed—an affirmation or mantra you need to visualize taking root in yourself. An “anchor” is applied while under hypnosis—pressing together your finger and thumb while saying your healing words. This is a tool that helps your body remember, so when you are in your normal waking day amongst turbulent challenges, you can press together your finger and thumb to trigger the new memory you have planted in yourself, allowing it to surface in your new material world. 

In this guidance, “I have a choice” is such a memory, to remind you that every day, every moment, can be an active choice. Although many things are out of our control, we have agency in our words, our actions, and our reactions. Planting the seed of choice at the unconscious level during hypnosis can help us reaching deeply ingrained narratives and behavioral patterns and work with brain plasticity to embody the choices we have in how to react, interact, and change.

Air Age Blueprint: K Allado-McDowell and Erik Davis in conversation

In the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, the mysterious Satoshi Nakamoto published a revolutionary white paper that described a simple peer-to-peer electronic cash system that would later become Bitcoin. In the decade since the launch of the digital currency, the nascent blockchain technology behind Bitcoin has been heralded as having the same radical potential as the printing press or the Internet, in particular presenting extraordinary challenges to traditional banking. Yet the paper contains no reference to existing political ideas, monetary or economic knowledge. Why?

THE WHITE PAPER, with an introduction by James Bridle, situates Bitcoin within an obscure historical movement of decentralisation, powered by the ideologies of encryption, showing how blockchain is part of a wider project to redraw the maps of political possibility. Crypto-economist Jaya Klara Brekke’s guide analyses Nakamoto’s canonical text as the Rosetta Stone that reveals the far-reaching implications of decentralisation.

In this discussion held at Foyles on 4 February 2019, Jaya sits down with Ben Vickers and Paul Mason to discuss how Nakamoto's White Paper can serve as a compass for the rapidly shifting terrain of contemporary techno-politics.

The White Paper by Satoshi Nakamoto: Jaya Klara Brekke, Ben Vickers and Paul Mason in conversation

A minimix of hypnotic Italian music inspired by the Italian town of Mondaino (Mount of Deer or Diana) where a crescent-shaped piazza bears an image of the moon inlaid in its paving stones; the open end of the crescent faces south and is centred on the church tower, which is askew to the building. According to Mario Pazzaglini, the image "functions in the worlds of both the old and new religions, paganism and Catholicism. In this gesture both worlds are noted and united in a scheme that can be seen as a 'moon dial', a device that relates in a symbolic geographic way to the various cycles and changes of the moon. This entire town is still a temple to the moon and thereby Diana." 

For DJ Mooncup, DJing can be a bit like scrying: "sometimes things coalesce out of chaos and I kind of spot these patterns in what I've been discovering, which makes me want to share them with other people. Often I find they tie in somehow to wider events, sometimes astrological ones, and in this case it seemed to fit the Pisces full moon very well."

DJ Mooncup explores the middle ground between techno and trance, moving beyond to encompass all things dark, weird and hypnotic. A sense of humour and 303-based acidic melodies, as well as industrial heft, are cornerstones of their sets. A resident on Bristol's Noods Radio and a regular at London's Rye Wax, plus squat parties and fundraisers across the UK, their sets aim for shared catharsis, building energy in a feedback loop with the audience.

Laurel Halo is an electronic music composer, performing artist and DJ, born in Detroit and based in Berlin. Since the release of her debut album Quarantine (2012) on the pioneering London label Hyperdub, she has established herself as a distinct and innovative voice in the electronic music sphere. Drawing from a range of music lineages, her considered approach has enabled her to maintain a signature aesthetic across a stylistically diverse output, traversing pop, ambient, leftfield club, experimental electronica and film score. She has released on labels including Hyperdub, Honest Jon’s, Latency and Livity Sound, and has collaborated with John Cale, Metahaven, Hodge, Eli Keszler, Julia Holter and Hatsune Miku, among others. Her most recent LP is a collection of original score for the 2018 Metahaven film Possessed, released by Vinyl Factory in April 2020.

For the second episode of Carrier Bag Music, Elysia Crampton Chuquimia responds to the concept, image and process of the medicine bundle — a collection of sacred items with spiritual significance, held in a special carrier, in Indigenous American cultures. Spanning over seventeen years of the artist's life, this episode comprises original music and edits by the artist and includes the premiere of a previously unreleased track ‘Stars Over Riparian Corridor’ and features music released under the artist's Jaqi name, Chuquimamani-Condori — the name given to her as a form of honour and recognition from the elders of her nation.
 
Elysia Crampton Chuquimia is an American artist and musician belonging to the Pakajaqi Aymara nation. Her eclectic music is the flashpoint of myriad influences opening upon the complexity of Aymara becoming. Underscored by radical and queer politics and touching upon themes of science fiction, faith and ontology, Crampton’s experimental work gives sonorous form to contemporary expressions of Aymara resistance and survival: a project of 'becoming-with', in the shades given this term by Donna Haraway via prison abolitionist Che Gossett.

The third episode of Carrier Bag Music by Jenna Sutela is a mixed bag of sounds and music by humans and non-humans. A proposal for interspecies symbiosis, this otherworldly mix gathers collaborators including slime mould, space bacteria, artificial intelligence and yeast cells.

Jenna Sutela works with words, sounds, and other living media, such as Bacillus subtilis nattō bacteria and the “many-headed” slime mold Physarum polycephalum. Her audiovisual pieces, sculptures, and performances seek to identify and react to precarious social and material moments, often in relation to technology. Sutela's work has been presented at museums and art contexts internationally, including Guggenheim Bilbao, Moderna Museet, and Serpentine Galleries. She is a Visiting Artist at The MIT Center for Art, Science & Technology (CAST) in 2019-20.

For the final episode of Carrier Bag Music, Victoria Sin presents a bag of dreams containing the potential for awakening. Exploring different states of consciousness, the artist questions what and how we know.  
 
With excerpts from past and future performances, original sketches, a voice note from a lover, sound recordings from the edge of the world and from the artists' childhood home, erhu solos by Sun Huang taken from a performance of the Butterfly Lovers Concerto, a dream from the Chuang Tzu Inner Chapters, 'Earth, Wind, Fire, Water, and Spirit' from the album 'The Body is a Message of the Universe' by Shiho Yabuki, and excerpts from the artist's dream diary during lockdown.
 
Victoria Sin (b. 1991, Toronto CA) is an artist using speculative fiction within performance, moving image, writing, and print to interrupt normative processes of desire, identification, and objectification. Drawing from close personal encounters of looking and wanting, their work presents heavily constructed fantasy narratives on the often unsettling experience of the physical within the social body.

Carrier Bag Music: Victoria Sin

How can we use storytelling as a tool to interrogate and expand our understanding of ‘fiction’ and ‘reality’? Ursula K. Le Guin’s reimagination of the humble bag or container as the first human invention hacked heroic, patriarchal narratives to tell a different story of our relationship with technology. 

Sophia Al-Maria, Irenosen Okojie,Tai Shani and chair Victoria Sin discuss how Le Guin’s notion of the story as a device for telling strangely realistic fictions informs their own approaches to challenging dominant myths of linear progress and apocalypse. Through their writing they explore post-patriarchal futures, time travel and cyborgian myth, and look at monstrosity and political selfhood with a cast of characters including medieval mystics Hildegard of Bingen and Theresa de Avila, shape-shifting goddesses and Britney Spears.

The Bag of Stars: Storytelling and Technology

What happened to the aspirations of 1990s cyberfeminists to sabotage the Big Daddy Mainframe?

Examining how “technology is both a source and a consequence of gender relations”, ten years after the original term was coined, Judy Wajcman wrote the book TechnoFeminism building on the insights of cyberfeminism.

On the occasion of the publication of Beautiful Warriors in English translation, edited by Cornelia Sollfrank, Mindy Seu, Judy Wajcman and chair Marie Thompson explore contemporary theories and practices of technofeminism. Incorporating ecological, decentralized, economic and intersectional perspectives, they look at how today’s forms of discrimination and exploitation are being responded to by feminist hackers, techno-eco-feminists and others.

Revisiting The Future: Technofeminism in the 21st Century

For NTS on the Feast Day of Hildegard of Bingen on 17 September 2020, Ignota Books presented Unknown Language, a new novel by Hildegard of Bingen and Huw Lemmey with Bhanu Kapil and Alice Spawls. Ranging from speculative mysticism, Hildegard’s mystical invented language Lingua Ignota, apocalyptic visions, sonic revelations and the greening power of viriditas, this show explores the life and work of the polymath, healer, composer, scientist and mystic visionary, channelling her messages for the 21st century. 

Long before the collapse of the Information Age, in the twelfth century since the appearance of the prophet Christ, young Hildegard finds grace in Unknown Language. In this story of survival and miracles, Hildegard encounters love, both queer and divine, and great peril. As the visionary healer travels through the unfamiliar landscape following a great cataclysm, she discovers the mythic quantum energy of viriditas in the natural world around her. Her journey becomes one of return, to the sacred truth of her own being. 
Hildegard’s tale is received in the plague year of 2020 by Alice Spawls, and then in the next century, in a sea cave with cracked amethyst walls. On planet Avaaz, once known as Earth, Bhanu Kapil’s Pinky Agarwalia finds fragments of a beautiful codex. Lingua Ignota, Hildegard's unknown language, bears seeds of renewal for a world in flux.
