Joy Spring by Clifford Brown has long been a favourite jazz standard of mine, one of those tunes that uplifts, a perfect reflection of its wonderful title.

I suggested making a version to Derek and he came back with this wonderful arrangement; his feather light acoustic guitar and easy swing tempo are a perfect counterpoint to my clarinet. It's a lovely combination and one that comes as close as I've come to capturing the elusive spirit of this sweetest of jazz tunes. 

Clifford Brown died at the age of 25, pretty typical for a jazz musician in the '50s you might say. The tragic irony is he bucked the trend, was famously clean-living but died in a car accident travelling between gigs.
