Before becoming a composer I've played trumpet. I started playing when I was 7 and by the age of 16 was quite a promising student when I damaged my embouchure and had to interrupt my career. Only a decade later I started playing again during my music lessons for children, then three years ago I joined a brass band and from this year on picked up on regular practicing. Lessons with Frank van der Poel and his method have been a great help in regaining the embouchure!

Right now I focus on Armenian traditional duduk repertoire which I play on a four valves quarter tone trumpet specially made by Hub van Laar. I try to bring the beauty and warmth of the duduk's sound and its ornamentation into my trumpet playing.

This musical material is very dear to me and it came to me many years ago, in about 2002. I would walk to my bus stop to go to school or walk to the bazar always humming these few very simple chords. They were stuck in my head for quite some years. Strange that at that time I had never considered doing anything with this material. Maybe because I was very much occupied with abstract contemporary conceptual music back then. The older I become the more I appreciate clarity, simplicity and emotion in music rather than complexity and hidden abstract concepts. The time to unfold this material came 20 years after. Thomas Nakas aka @to_mi_nor brought it to life by creating a beautiful piano part, structure and arrangement. This is our second EP and there are more works to come!

The improvisations are rough, meaning that I recorded them in one take with no corrections or editing and this represents the concept of this EP. Do we have to be perfect at all? Or is it maybe more important to honestly communicate your thoughts, your feelings, regrets, nostalgia?..

Days that gone never come back again. The name is of this project is representative of the process that music goes from Athens to Amsterdam and came back as feedback.

Usually, when I'm composing I have a strong imaginative concept that motivates me and lures me to the result.  
As an exception in these types of projects, I imagine just where the trumpet should go and how can boost and highlight the overall try. 
So these compositions even if that alone, are fair enough to get listened to and enjoyed, are not complete without trumpet because their existing purpose was to get paired and accompanied by the trumpet's element.

Seven very talented young composers of today made an interdisciplinary program in Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ working together with the Nieuw Ensemble, as well as various artists, from an actress to a jazz singer. Brand-new compositions, a sound sculpture, music-theater, were all presented in the Great Hall, offering to the audience an exciting glimpse of 2014′s new music scene.

This wonderful song by @matthias_am_klavier is a trip through landscapes and inner realms, a topic that has always fascinated him. Thanks a lot to Matthias for asking me to record the trumpet part and Adam Tucker for doing the mastering.

Duo for Soinua

In this piece the newly invented string instruments are playing in combination with flute, soprano voice and piano. The strings are being stretched between the beams of the mezzanine of the building and also hanging from the ceiling beams with heavy weights on them. The hanging strings surround the audience and musicians. A very special building HET VEEM (Van Diemenstraat 410, 1013 CR Amsterdam) - former warehouse, where the piece was premiered, inspired us to create these instruments and this composition. The concert was performed as a part of Toetsdestijds Concerten Series.

This piece was written specially for the second edition of the "Omnibus Laboratorium" in Tashkent in August 2006. The piece was inspired by Georg Heym's Berlin I:

Beteerte Fässer rollten von den Schwellen 
Der dunklen Speicher auf die hohen Kähne. 
Die Schlepper zogen an. Des Rauches Mähne 
Hing rußig nieder auf die öligen Wellen. 

Zwei Dampfer kamen mit Musikkapellen. 
Den Schornstein kappten sie am Brückenbogen. 
Rauch, Ruß, Gestank lag auf den schmutzigen Wogen 
Der Gerbereien mit den braunen Fellen. 

In allen Brücken, drunter uns die Zille

Three Pieces For Trombone Solo

Igor Iofe is a
composer whose musical
paths lead to diverse stylistic destinations. Currently Igor's focus in music is Armenian traditional duduk repertoire which he performs on trumpet. He brings the beauty and warmth of the duduk into his trumpet playing.

At the Conservatorium van Amsterdam he studied with  Wim Hendrickx,Richard Ayres,  Fabio Nieder,Willem Jeths and Jorrit Tamminga. Igor attended masterclasses with Misato Mochizuki, Dmitry Kourliandski, Tristan Murail andTan Dun. His music was performed at the Composers’ Festival Amsterdam (2012 and 2013), Atlas Academy (2010-12),  Looptail XXX and at such venues as De Link, De Duif, Het Bethaniënklooster, Het Veem, STEIM, Muziekgebouw aan 't Ij and CvA in Amsterdam and other cities of the Netherlands. His piece Y+Ywas performed by the Joint Venture Percussion Duo at several venues in the USA and Europe.

Parallel to his Classical Composition studies Igor studied Composing Music for Film with Jurre Haanstra and graduated as a Master in Composing for FIlm at the CvA. During his studies he wrote music for several movies which were shown at the Beeldbuis Filmfestival, Keep an Eye Film Festival, VERS Awards, Cinekid Filmfestival, M2M Filmfestival and Pleinbioscoop Rotterdam.
