Zeki—Chamber Opera (2024)

A little glimpse into the electronics for my new ensemble version of "sand like gold-leaf in smithereens (ii)" for violin, ensemble, and electronics. I’ve been reshaping the piece, and it’s taking on a new form — so I wanted to share a short excerpt.

All violin sounds are recorded with Carolin Widmann, and I performed all the other acoustic instruments used in the electronics.

The title of the piece is an intentional play on words, referring to stylistic contrasts and two key metal subgenres: djent and thall—both known for their rhythmic complexity, heavy sonorities, and technical precision. On another semantic level, "Djentle // Bruthall" evokes opposing ideas: “gentle” and “brutal,” which form the fundamental sonic and formal premises of the composition.

Eric Moe: WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 5 YEARS

"speak through speaking" is a work inspired by Peter Handke's play, Kaspar, and specifically by its protagonist's recurring line: "I want to be someone, like someone else once was."

The composition's starting point is a rough sonification of myself reading this sentence, and deals with the resultant sound in ways similar to how Handke's play uses words—always aiming at an analysis of reality through different kinds of repetition.

The work is written and dedicated to POING.
